@@duckdivorce Mein Satzbau in der englischen Sprache ist auch nicht gut aber für englisch reichts allemal. Diese Sprache muss ich zum Glück nicht perfekt beherrschen.
He is the minister of foreign affairs. His english speaking abilities should not interfere with his ability to adequately express his ideas in a concise manner.

Look at the french president :) he is not able to talk in english..By the way they do not even need to speak english (all of them have inteprets, translators etc...) dont be mad at himn and dont be ashamed...there are a lot, but really a lot of politicians in the world who cant speak english or dont want to.. @Runner1129 I can not agree with your point as you can not compare his English skills with other people. He is the foreign minister of Germany. He represents a strong, wealthy nation which is well respected. Countries listen to Germany´s opinion and if our representative can not even speak English fluently, rather broken and not grammatically correct. He needs to think about the structure of his sentence and this is just embarrasing for a country as he can not present a Countrys policy.
Since so many people are complaining about the english skills of our foreign secretary mr westerwelle I´d like to know the starting points those complains are based on. Its obvious that his knowledge of english is far from being coequal to a native speaker but aside from this his grammar isnt flawed much at all and his lexicon seems to be quite decent aswell. In addition I highly doubt that all those persons who claim to speak better english actually do so.
Listen to me please, I am now in the shape of being in the middle point of interest, what makes me very very proud of something that is so difficult to express at the others, because I want to impress everybuddy so much that it makes me wanna cry, cry high to the sky - mountain deep + river high. Me want to get along to express something so difficult that you listeners are so impressed with me as my countrymen, when I talk in my native-speak me sounds also uncommonely satisfied and untrue also.
@LOHENGRINize I think foreign ministers of EU states should know English. They are required to be in Brussels or in other European capitals so often, and the European Council meetings are almost always held in English. It has become the most frequently used working language of the EU, so really, it seems bizarre to chose someone to be foreign minister who can't communicate fully in this language. There are so many German politicians who can speak English very well, so why did they pick him?
@Runner1129 Actually it does matter a lot! He needs to improve his English knowledge, he is twisting German words with English ones and the other way around. Westerwelle is the state secretary respectively foreign minister of Germany, so English should be peanuts for a man in this position. It is pretty much necessary :D
@thejoymonster OK, point taken. But I was also pointing out that his English really is not bad. I am an English teacher, and I have met "English teachers" who are not native speakers here in Germany who speak English much worse than he does. I suppose he could use some lessons. I would be willing to teach him for the right price! :-)

It is verry poor if ask me too talk like this as a forgein minister and this is not latin or something else it is ENGLISH and nowdays every student in the 12 grade could speak more professional

@barbieworldification I think you mean foreign minister. And he is under no obligation to speak English as perfect, as say, me a NATIVE speaker. As I said, his ability is fine, he speaks slowly but he uses a wide variety of vocabulary CORRECTLY. Give him a break.
@Isthischeese I agree, I´m an English teacher here in Germany and I find nothing wrong with his ability to speak English. I have no idea why people keep making fun of him. Speaking another language is not easy, and the average German speaks worse than he does.
The fellow is using his language as a weapon ..what a deradful accent.. he is talking much too fast for a native speaker questioning or addressing a foreigner ..this is considered to be blooming impolite and rude, even among Brits..

Concerning the grammar his english isnt so bad at all, what makes it so funny to listen to him is the german accentuation of his speech. But leaving aside the pronounciation there is no reason for such an indignation...
going beyond his funny english, the man actually says the follwing: fuck the rest.... we want to be on top of everyone... screw everyone else, we are germans we must rule the world ... hhahahhahaah scary isn't it?!

I am German and I have to say, this is an embarrassment to Germany, seriously, this dude should seriously learn how to speak English properly, before trying to answer questions in English....
His English isn't bad. Sure, it's not as good as the average German's, and he said one or two things which didn't make sense, but other than that it was comprehensible and better than I was expecting
@zapppy1 well of course he has to speak english. It is part of general Education to speak in a proper english and a politican should be good educated even if most of them are not

das hat er schön gesagt... :) aber mal im ernst: sein recht gebrochenes englisch kann man auch mal durch die thematik erklären. smalltalk ist einfach, "fachenglisch" darf man nicht unterschätzen. und letztendlich kannste als hochgradiger politiker auch nich innerhalb von einer min. 2000 einzelne sätze sagen, sondern verschachtelst die alle noch mit nebensätze und und und. soll er nen guten job machen, und da ist er auch schon mehr als ausgelastet.... :P
sein Englisch ist gar nicht soooo schlecht. Er hat halt etwas wenig Übung. Bei den meisten, die hier behaupten, sie könnten das soooo viel besser würden viel schlimmer scheitern, wenn sie zum ersten Mal richtig frei Englisch sprechen müssten.
Sein Englisch ist grauenhaft: ein starker deutscher Akzent und sehr einfache Wortwahl. Da konnte Fischer um Welten besser englisch sprechen. Übrigens hatte ich mal ein CNN-Interview von Schäuble gesehen. Selbst der sprach wesentlich besser englisch als Westerwelle. Als er damals den BBC-Reporter hat ablitzen lassen, lag das zumindest zum Teil auch daran, dass er sich auf englisch nicht sicher fühlt. Das ist eigentlich eine Blamage für einen Außenminister.

Mit dem, was er da zusammenkratzt, würde er gerade noch mit einer 5 durch das Abitur kommen. Stellt euch vor, ihr schreibt ein Englisch-Examen einfach: "Der Aufschwung ist da", weil ihr mit eurem Englisch nicht weiter kommt. Da kommt der Korrektor und haut euch das Ding um die Ohren. Ich finde, es kann einfach nicht sein, dass jemand, der so wenig Kenntnisse der derzeitigen Weltsprache besitzt, Außenminister ist, und Deutschland in der Welt vertritt. Das ist absolut lächerlich.
@cavier17 Warum findest du es dann angebracht einen Kommentar über seine (angebliche) sexuelle Orientierung (die keinen von uns interessieren soll) abzulassen? Da du in Klammern deine "Schwul!"-Aussage für Ungläubige noch verstärken musst ("ohne witz!"), beweist mir, dass Homosexualität für dich immer noch etwas "Anderes" ist. Nicht dass mich das sonderlich kratzt - aber interessant ist es schon, dass viele Leute in meinem Alter eine komplett andere Toleranzschiene fahren.
Also ganz ehrlich, Westerwelle und Matthäus sind vielleicht keine Weltklasse Englischsprecher. Aber sie sind um Welten besser als Oettinger Punkt zweitens ich denke mir sehr viel die sich darüber lustig machen können selber nicht besser Englisch, da wäre Deutschland das Land mit dem besten Englisch sprechen der Welt nach England und den USA. Außerdem sagen viele native Englisch Sprüche das ist völlig ausreichend ist, und sie ja wissen dass es nicht ihre Muttersprache ist und trotzdem Englisch lernen. Als ich früher noch kein gutes Englisch gesprochen habe, habe ich mich trotzdem ran gewackelt Engländern etc Englisch zu sprechen, und sie meinten jedesmal dass man es versteht und sie es toll finden dass man eine andere Sprache lernt Nebenbei möchte ich mal andere Länder Englisch sprechen hören wie z.b. die Franzosen, alleine schon wegen ihrer Arroganz würden die nichts außer Französisch sprechen
Ich bin zwar überhaupt kein FDP-Fan, aber die meisten die hier Westerwelle-Bashing betreiben wissen wahrscheinlich noch nicht einmal was die Begriffe "dynamic of society", "ambitious aims" oder "unemployment rate" bedeuten. Die Aussprache ist natürlich nicht so der Kracher. Und bitte aufhören mit: "In der fünften Klasse konnte ich besser Englisch."
Ich glaube das is so: Wenn man ein guter Redner in Deutsch ist, weit ausholt, kompliziertere Formulierungen benutzt und dann versucht, das ins Englische zu übertragen dann muss man nur ein Wort nicht wissen und alles stockt. Also wenn man einfach gewohnt ist, feine Nuancen auszudrücken, für die einem das englische Vokabular fehlt.

@bluelamat Nunja, das stimmt natürlich auch wieder. Nicht destotrotz ist das noch besseres Englisch als Öttinger seins und verstehen konnte man ihn auch. Das Politiker nicht gut englisch können, ist aber nichts neues. Kohl konnte auch nur sehr wenig englisch...
Man kann von ihm halten, was man will... Aber er hat die Frage verstanden, hat etwas überlegt und dann versucht, so gut zu beantworten, wie es in einer Fremdsprache möglich ist. Welcher Außenminister aus USA, UK oder sonst woher spricht eigentlich ein vergleichbares Deutsch???
Da kann ich dich beruhigen. Ich lebe seit 12 Jahren in England und wüsste dafür auch keine direkte Übersetzung. Ich würde wohl sowas sagen wie “the economy is booming”.

@Isthischeese man merkt doch, wie er wörter zwanghaft sucht, um irgendwie den begonnen satz noch zu beenden. und inhaltlich kommt da eigentlich nicht viel rüber... obwohl, das ist bei ihm in der deutchen sprache ja genauso. vielleicht ist es absicht.
also, ich verstehe Westerwelle deutlich besser als den Reporter. Es ist schwer, eine auf deutsch überlegte politische Rede genauso im Englischen wiederzugeben.

Nahezu alle Länder lieben ihren Akzent und betrachten ihn sogar als wichtigen Bestandteil ihrer Identität, aber wir meinen wie ein Muttersprachler in einer Fremdsprache klingen zu müssen (was teilweise sogar phonetisch gesehen nahezu unmöglich ist) . Herrlich :D

Ich finde es grundsätzlich sehr sympathisch wenn deutsche politiker ein schlechtes englisch haben, es ist klasse wegen dem krassen akzent und einfach nur lustig. Siehe Öttinger ;-)
The Aufschwung ist da , Dampfmaschine, in 10 Minuten steigen sie direkt in den Hauptbahnhof ein. Auf einer Station für Demenzkranke wird man wohl ähnliche Sätze hören
