Yakima Canutt is actually listed by name in the supporting cast. For those unfamiliar with him, he and Bill Pickett, both real cowboys, are considered the best rodeo riders ever. Canutt was from the Great Basin: eastern Washington, eastern Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, parts of Northern California and Utah. Slightly different cowboy style than Texas, the High Plains, California or Arizona. Canutt was also one of the greatest of all Hollywood stunt men (Ben Hur, Stagecoach, etc.) and was an excellent second unit director. Wayne credited him with teaching how to ride and act like a real range hand. Canutt, the foundational Western actor William S. Hart (another Canutt friend) and the actor Harry Carey, Senior are the three major influences for Wayne's film persona. Look for him in the film.

Yakima Canutt was in over 30 John Wayne movies, along with dozens and dozens of others. As you said he was a real cowboy, one of the greatest stuntmen ever and a huge inspiration for how John Wayne developed his cowboy persona. A true Hollywood legend that doesn't get nearly the respect he deserves.

Good memories. Back then, I had a girl friend that liked watching them also, then she would insist that I take her to a local livery stable to rent horses for a couple of hours. She always seemed to get the good riding horses and I seemed to get the horses that were lazy, kept trying to go back home, stopping...... and made me work and it took me a bit to realize that was an incredible education. I learned that horses do not act like John Wayne's majestic white horse.

John's still a few years away from being an A-star actor but it's easy to see the improvement in his skills over 3 or 4 years of acting. Or it could be that he's simply waiting for a role and movie that'll showcase his talents. Anyway this is one of the better oaters of the period, quite believable.

Itcis, since the Vigilantes were hunting wanted fugitives, it would make sense that they would be getting paid the bounties on each of them. Thanks for uploading. Great audio & visual of a very old classic. Really enjoyed watching pure entertainment. Made in days when people watched films for the enjoyment and back in days songs & dancing were often included as part of entertainment in the movies. If folks wanted reality, history or documentaries in 1935, they would not have turned to a John Wayne & the Singing Riders film. Many didnt see film until on free public TV so it was greatly appreciated for everything it is and not criticize what it wasnt. These films were made on frugal funds, back when writers & actors paid little comparitive to todays expectations. Love young John Wayne & watching his films over the years until his very last, The Shootist (1976), whose main character, J. B. Books, was dying of cancer-which Wayne himself succumbed to three years later. Thanks again for this opportunity! 👍

He really has an impressive life and stayed busy with rodeo riding, stunt riding, and directing. @@JE-western-rider If you like understanding the early days of westerns just watch the credits at the end. Canutt is listed as an actor, stuntman or director in various movies. There is a long list of the stunts he created or made safer during his life. Walter Brennan is another that had quite a career before "The Real McCoys". He won 3 Academy Awards as Best Supporting Actor between 1936 and 1940 making him only 1 of 3 male actors to win 3 Academy Awards. Was one heck of a supporting actor. Then there's there Smiley Burnette. As Frog Milhouse in his primary role of Gene Autry's sidekick. I also saw him in a Flash Gordon style movie in an ill fitting body suit from the 30s. His career ran from 1934 until the 60s. Also played proficiently over 100 musical instruments, sometimes more than one simultaneously. He invented some instruments and wrote more than 400 songs recorded by many others from Willie Nelson to Bing Crosby. Or look around for the early Gene Autry movie where a young Leonard Sly (Roy Rogers real name) is a bad guy in a black hat and where Leonard changes turning into a good guy snitch at the end.

Been doing it for about 50 years back before the internet when it took effort and several trips to the library. Today there's a world of information a few keystrokes away. If you get into WWII people the person I'm investigating today is Duško Popov. A Serbian double agent that fed misinformation to the Nazis helping the allies win WWII. He was one of Fleming's inspirations for the character James Bond. Among things he did was turn over advance information to the FBI about the impending attack on Pearl Harbor but Hoover didn't trust him so it was discounted. He also fed misinformation to the Nazis about the landings in Normandy causing them to send over 200,000 men to the wrong landing site. The white horses for the good guys were a grand visual bit. But weren't those the days in film when they didn't take care what happened to the stunt horses? Toward the end when they strung the rope to trip the riders, some of the horses didn't seem to do too well. And when the rig went over the cliff, I shuddered and almost wept. At least now the animals are better treated.
@JE-western-rider
@JE-western-rider Год назад
Long Comment: The canyon stunt was a thrill to watch and it must have been a thrill for the horseback riders to perform and it should have been filmed and shown from a couple of views. The Chestnut / sorrel ? in the bottom right corner is thrown and as the horse tries to get up, it can't. Look closely, the trip wire is still tight, and the horse can't extend its legs. And if you listen closely, you can hear the rider yelling at the frantic horse. The horse stunt with the wagon team gave me a totaly opposite feeling and made me gasp. This men that did this were cold-blooded, they set up and executed a stunt that could kill or cripple four trained horses. Looks like the front horses are tripped, then the second pair runs over the tripped horses. Just don't see this stunt ending well. Also, I'd hate to have been one of the crew for this stunt. It would have been heartbreaking to be on set for this stunt. I would really not want to untangle those heavy harnesses,which can weigh upwards of 125 pounds ] and deal with the hurt horses. Hurt horses don't handle pain very well. As a young teen, I learned to ride livery horses by waching westerns. Later on, during the summers, I worked at a couple of livery stables. I had a chance to watch other riders that were very hard on the horses or cruel to their mounts. I was watching my younger self ride the horses, and I realized that the livery horses had no way to protect them selves from cruel riders. Also, I had the opportunity to work with a couple of teams of Wagon horses. They are seriously incredible.

Please don't get angry at me, I love John Wayne movie's also. I never get tired of them. But you'd have to admit in today's society I can have some fun with the name of this movie. "Westward Ho" "Ho's westward" "Go westward Ho" "Ho's out westward" "Westward Ho's Westward" Ho's West!! So many variables, just couldn't help getting a bit of a laugh out of it.😄😉 Sorry, my-bad, not...😎

I enjoyed it, thanks for uploading. Some things stood out, which I think they got better at as they continued making Westerns over the next couple of decades. Early on, when we first saw the vigilantes, it was noticeable that they were apparently living rough in very dry country, but their shirts were clean and pressed and the hats were spotless. They obviously had dust-repellant fabrics in those days. In this movie, most of the hats were high crowned and the bash looked like it was properly set in with steam. In later movies the fashion suggested that everyone bought their hat with an open crown and then put in the bash themselves, giving a very rough appearance. Also, a couple of nasty falls of horses, they later stopped doing that, I'm glad to say. One thing I never really got with Westerns, and this didn't change much over the decades, was the apparent love affair that cowboys had with handguns, rather than the much more accurate rifles.
@dontaylor7315
@dontaylor7315 3 года назад
Correct on handguns vs rifles but the cowboys' real love affair was with their horses, saddles and ropes. I'm pretty sure they typically had a lot more respect for a good cowhand than for a gun hand.
@buckbuchanan4902
@buckbuchanan4902 11 месяцев назад
Fromthebatcave: Handguns would be much easier to shoot while riding a horse, although still incredibly inaccurate because of the bouncing of the horse. Handguns were also much cheaper to buy than rifles, so many cowboys may not have owned a rifle.

ThisI movie should still be avaiable. While, the crew and riders were hard on the horses, the horse stunts, from what I understand, were not in violation of laws. Wonder how many horses were killed or injured just so they could show sequences where horses were made to fall by trip rope ...where it showed one horse just briefly after the Fall holding its leg I am sure was broken....and who knows the condition of the 4 white horses pulling the wagon that were trip wired.... such inhumane treatment of animals just to make a brief moment in a movie
@westernrider100
@westernrider100 2 года назад
The canyon stunt was should have been photographed from a couple of different angles. The Chestnut / sorrel ? in the bottom right corner is thrown and as the horse tries to get up, it can't. Look closely, the trip wire is still tight, and the horse can't extend its legs. And if you listen closely, you can hear someone yelling at the horse. Thats one horse that might not trust its next rider. I've worked with wagon teams and those horses are fantastic. The men that planned and did this stunt were cold-blooded. The front horses were tripped, then the second pair ran them over. This stunt could have crippled or killed four valuable horses. Besides, I'd hate to have been one of the crew for this stunt. It would have been hard untangling those heavy harnesses and dealing with the hurt horses. Also hurt horses, as strong as they are, they do not handle pain very well and that makes them hard to work with.
