Decided two days before just out of the blue, went and spent four days on Dartmoor, didn't see another human for the first two days, loved every minute of it, even getting drenched and cold. Totally hooked on the place now, will be up there again next month. Cheers for the vid!!
Great video. Great escapism over the moors, the scenery is stunning! We did our first wild camp in Wistman's Woods there last month. It was wet too but so picturesque. Thanks for sharing :)
Any time you can get away from the work-a-day world and enjoy nature like that you're doing yourself a favor! Dry and sunny are especially nice but windy and rainy are special too. When its ugly you can throw on all the rain gear and manage...or crawl in with a book and listen to the tent and rain and relax. For all you who haven't gotten a tent/sleeping bag/tent and tried it DO IT! I'm sure you have friends that like getting out so hook up with them and get introduced to camping away. Its so nice to leave 'home' and be comfortably exploring open country and retiring to a cozy tent in the evening!
na stay stick it out, contemplation and introspection are what comes of days like these we get closer to who we are. it sounds mad the idea of being out in weather like that, but its balm for the sole. i miss dartmoor and exmoor as i know live in australia. there wonderful places that bring you closer to the true sense of existence. thanks for sharing with us.
I've watched 1 minute, 35 seconds of this video, and I have subscribed! I just know that I am going to like your videos! I used to live fairly close to Dartmoor, and never got the chance, or perhaps took the chance, to get out on to the moors for a night under canvas. I hope to see what it was like for you. Very sad to hear of your mums passing. I hope that you have found some peace and closure surrounding such a big life event. All the best, CS.
Good video - typical Dartmoor weather. You got some good kit there. as for fuel, Meths is ok, if you don't mind the smell! I only use Meths solely to boil water (for drinks & dehydrated meals). Gas I'll use for longer boiling times (like boil in the bag) or if I need to simmer. Either way, both have their pro's & cons.
( Sorry to hear about your mother, sad news. My mother died a few years back at the age of 82, know the story ). I like those "Look What Weve Found" ready meals but their expensive and you don't get too much food for your money, two's about enough for a decent meal id say, their quite weighty also Another good effort, I look forwards to your future posts, thanks,.
Miserable conditions! You did well to endure them. Even I struggle in them, esp mist and rain, just not pleasant. Wise heading home. Thanks for sharing and mentioning me. Take care.
Tragic, unbelievably sad, so I'll say little here, can't imagine the pain. Mine OK, but she doesn't do much these days sleepy all the time. All those ciggies :-( she's happy, has all her cats around her.
Thankyou for the sub and the kind words, I have watched some of your vids and have enjoyed them! I love my hillebergs especially the jannu, I chose this for my winter tent though it is not the lightest it is a great tent. I am new to camping and you tube and am looking forward to making new friends threw this community of like minded people who enjoy getting out there.I intend doing the dartmoor perambulation in september which is 50 miles with wild camping over 3 days. atb steve.
Oh I am sorry to hear about your mom my friend May her soul rest in Peace. This is good to be in outdoors to Get some change of the situation You going through
Since I came to the USA 36yrs ago I still miss places like Dartmoor. Here in Ohio, there are no places like Dartmoor in Ohio for wild camping. If there is I haven't found them yet.
I've always been led to believe Ohio was similar to Kentucky and there was some serious country up that way? I think the closest to Dartmoor in North America might be parts of northern Maine, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, you'd have to pretend the moose are Dartmoor ponies though!
Glad you enjoyed the vid, I am relatively new to the camping side and also you tube, but i'm enjoying every chance i get to get out there and the peacefulness is great! glad you had a good first solo wild camp on dartmoor and many moor trips to come, Thanks for the sub atb steve.
started off hiking and bought gear from mountin warehouse but the first wet outing i got soaked so decided after that the way to go was to get better gear so have scrimped and saved and grabbed a bargain where ever i can and I have found that a dry chappy is a happy chappy lol just need to invest in new boots as mine are now leaking no matter how much waterproofing i put on lol
Yea, and those conditions play tricks with the mind too, well, mine, and I don't like it. Sun much nice lol! Wet underfoot is OK. Its whats above my head I worry about lol. I'm with you on same route, I tend to use the same or similar, but its always different. And I know it. If that makes sense.
Seriously consider trail runners, wet feet is almost inevitable. And embracing it is good but a big shock at first. Just dry feet at night. Its a tough call...good luck.
Thanks for your reply, one is not enough i have added rice to bulk them up etc, and i agree pricey for the quantity but i havent seen a bagged meal thats cheap yet. gonna pre-cook my own and then boil them i think. just need to find some good bags to do it in.
We obviously dont know each other but i feel it would be remiss of me not to offer my condolences. Snap on the 2 hilly tents and the mirco stove ,all great gear. I like Tony Hobbs as well he's out there doing it. I subbed and will look forward to more vids,ATB Eddie.
Great video, trying one a month myself on Dartmoor, last one (24th May) very high winds no video and some blurry pictures lol Keep the vids coming ATB Pads
Ops, I've missed the instructions to open it a bit lol! Maybe my taste buds but I like those meals but agree need two. I always add 50g of Smash, made up in a ziploc bag and spooned in. I'll need to concentrate camera on how I cook mine up another time. Esp as I use meths. Not had any issues, yet lol!
If you're sticking with those LWWF boil-in-the-bag jobs, it might be worth making a cosy from insulating material that you can pop the heated bag into. This means that you can hold the meal in your hand and the contents will stay hot for a lot longer.
what i like about this video is that it shows how the hilleberg akto generates loud noise when struck with wind. (also see daveswildcamping in his akto: the inner tent is shaken so much that it slaps into his face left and right and makes a noise that wouldn't just keep you from sleeping but would actually hurt your ears.) a lightweight hiking tent needs more that one pole. regardless of how many guy lines are present and how thick the kerlon is. the architecture underneath is more important. the macpac apollo is a great tent for that but macpac uses pvc in it`s tents, which are harmful to man and nature. maybe i'll find another producer who has a model like the apollo.
I'm so sorry you had just lost your Mum,did she give you your earliest experience of camping/wildcamping?? Mine did,and those memories are held tight.,a.t.b....
its in the small print tony I had to put the wifes glasses on to read it lol, tear corner off bag but that is for putting it in the microwave so i just follwed those instructions
Hi it is a compact camera a Sony DSC HX20V It takes really good video and pictures it has a great review for it's hd video abilities. has a wide angle lense and good zoom as well Im no photographer but I am really happy with it and it's easy to use.
It was miserable the wind and rain really came down friday night hardly had a winks sleep, and saturday the heavens opened and closed so often I dare not get me camera out when it really came down diddnt want it to get wet. even the tracks that the military use was running toe deep in water.
Why would you want to share the details about your mum? Very sad, I agree, but what's it got to do with camping and Dartmoor? Do a video or don't do a video, personal tragedies are an indulgence viewers are not interested in.
