I love the cella balm. I discovered it through a free sample in an order and was really impressed by the post shave feel all day long. So I ended up buying the whole set, the a/s is very nice too, not as sweet but a bit spicey and woody, good to balance the sugersweetness (amaretto;)) smell of the soap.
Great video comparison. I'm still on the waiting list for my Model T. I often vary between my Gillette adjustables and Rockwell 6s and 6c and get really smooth shaves with both. Thanks
I waited for my T-model 12 month n finally its here. The long waiting timer, the questionable correspondence in btw has not only left me with somer sort of stain.. The razor shaves vry well, is hefty, feels solid, b u t its not 100% stainless. Difficult to explain, for me this razor feels like its destiny originally was meant somewhat, somewhere different (maube all stainleds?). Howevr, its a fine razor.
@@opticwiddly5263 Its just another adjustable in my collection. It shaves fine, its not stainless. Somewhere I had expected something else, especially after the long waiting time, leaving a somewhat bitter taste. The final price they're aiming for is too high.
@@achimkohlhage1328 thank you for the reply. I saw that it was available today. Thought I would look at reviews before I pulled the trigger glad I did. I'll just hold out for one of Matt's revamped Fatboys
Nice job, Matt. The vintage Gillettes are hard to beat. I will have to try some of that Cella AS. You made it sound like a great experience. Keep up the good work.
I believe TTO razors may not work for me, which is a shame. I generally get good shaves with them everywhere except for my neck, which ends up really irritated and shows signs of razor burn. I find that the little blade flex on the TTOs is problematic for my neck.
I have a shorter handled Black Super Adjustable and the head is slightly different from the Slim Adjustable and it is noticibly heavier razor. The numbers are larger and the "collar" is not identical to the Slim's. In fact, I have one of each (model version) Fatboy, Slim and Super and each has distinctly different feel even set on the same setting. Even stranger, I have two Slims and they do not feel identical to each other when on the same setting with the same blade....Just randomly commenting anecdotal experiences ; I am not making this as some sort of definitive statement of how these razors work.
I have the model T and I like it. I wanted a butterfly adjustable razor and didn't want to buy some grungy old Gillette off Ebay. The thing about the model T is finding one. Every time I went to their Web site it was out of stock. I asked to be notified when they had one months ago. Yet to hear from them. Finally bought one from a guy on Ebay that somehow had 10 of them. Probably, over paid, but at least I have one.
With Gillettes one has to open, with T-model one can change gap when doors closed. Same with Vikings blade Emperor adjustable (another fine alternative with great looks, too).
This was not my experience on the review I did of the Viking. When adjusting with doors closed, the dial would loose all tension and spin freely. Solution was to open doors.
When you crack the doors, you allow the adjusting mechanism to do it's job without the resistance of the doors pressing down on it. Can you adjust without cracking doors- yes. But sometimes a really dirty Gillette won't work without the doors being cracked. It's kind of like "dry firing" a firearm. Is it possible? Yes. It is good for the mechanism over a long time? No.
@@pegasus8987 100% and then people wonder why their razor stops working,... They never took the time to figure out how to use it lol. Too many amateurs.
Turkey is only 4 weeks away Matt😁 What to wear? What to wear? 😂 Nice to see you trying the Cella but you need Michael Freedberg to do the pronunciation 👍
I puchased the T2 and am very pleased. Use 6 for with the grain and across the grain and 3 for against the grain for a perfect shave. Astra plat nd Barabasol in a can woek great.
I have a Rockwell T2 that my wife bought me as a birthday present. It's an awesome razor! I get a very smooth and close shave with it. But I'm very tempted to buy a Super 109 to try out. My Dad has one that's destroyed unfortunately (badly corroded). But he said it was a good razor when it was working.
Cella is a really lovely soap. It just doesn't get enough love online. P2 is a sentimental date code for me, so I have, inter alia, a long and a short handle p2 Black Beauty. Given that (along with my Fat Boy and Slim Adjustables) I'm equipped with adjustables, what's the performance value (as apposed to the collection value) of having yet more and more adjustables, particularly at the high price of any modern production razor? (And now for something completely different.) A few years ago, I had a taxi driver who had no idea about "ch" Italian c's, and drove me over the countryside trying to find Concerto Lane. I wasn't understanding, and later said caustically "It takes a concerted effort to mispronounce Concerto." So too Cella. And again, Cella is a really lovely soap.
Cool video, Matt! My father used Cella while growing up in Sicily. I am saying it now, when the Butterfly Rex (one can dream, right) comes out; I'm purchasing it!
Update. While I was thinking about the Model T, after reviewing the Rex Ambassador I decided to pull the trigger on the Ambassador. Great looking razor with the adjustability I want so I don't have to always buy different razors or plates to find "the right one." Can't wait until it arrives!
I guess it's safe to say that if Gillette wanted to come out with an adjustable razor again they'd probably just put their name on the Rockwell T2 haha. I know the Gillette Heritage and King C aren't made by Gillette, atleast the heads aren't. They're made by some other company.
I know lots of people got burned by Rockwell Razors myself included Canadian company, Canadian citizen I ordered one and after waiting for nearly nine months along with excuses and lots of BS I canceled my order with Rockwell and bought a Rex Ambassador, yes I know the Rex was far more expensive but considering the parts that the Rockwell Model T were made with I’m happy with the all stainless steel Rex hands down.
Joe Macrone bought one on ebay because of its loyal fan base and had matt and his boys at the emporium clean er up and send it back to me. I think it’s a fine razor but too aggressive for my taste. Any tips?
@@mattkennedy6115 I get it. It is a bit more aggressive than my daily shaver which is a Rockwell 6C plate 3. I do, however, enjoy pulling out the Fatboy and shaving with it particularly after a few days growth. Definitely more aggressive, but something nostalgic about it for me to the point where I'll never get rid of it. I won't shave with it every day, but I do love shaving with it.
@@mattkennedy6115 Sorry, I didn't answer your tip question. I shave with my Fatboy on setting #4. If I recall, I started out lower like a #2 and didn't like it. When I went up to #4 it was a better spot for me. This was contrary to what I would've thought actually. The other thing is getting the blade angle right. It takes some time to get the blade angle right on a new razor including the Fatboy. I also recall people saying try to ride the cap more vs. the bar. I believe this also helps as well. Try a few of these, but don't give up on it. I believe if you keep trying different setups (also blades) you'll eventually find the one that works for you, but it takes some patience. Good luck with it!
Joe Macrone thanks. I started out on a #3 at the suggestion of others. It works like a champ on the first pass but on subsequent passes even while I dial it down it can get quite messy. I appreciate the encouragement and you taking the time to respond
I found a 1969 (birth year) Gillette adjustable NIB. Love it. Sold my Rockwell 6S for it. Would love to get a low # Rex adjustable ( hint hint) if you ever make one in SS..........
Brent Jacobson you got to remember I didn’t get into the hobby for all the wonderful smells. Once I found a soap that worked I stuck with it for years. These videos and the Emporium have actually exposed me to a lot more products :)
I have a Rockwell 6C which I really like. Saw your vid on the 6C vs. 6S and have been hesitant to spend the money on the 6S for more face drag. Been thinking about trying the T too, but not ready to pull the trigger. Been using the Cella soap for quite a while and it's a really nice and very cheap. Smells great!!
The Super 89 is my favorite razor to use. Pair it with a vintage Schick Plus Platinum blade (I know, mixing brands is heresy 😜) and some good old Cella and you are in shaver heaven 👍🏻💈
One of my first DE razors was my dads Super 109... he was always Bragging that he shaved on 7.... umh... ok... lol... me ima 5 kinda guy... but tween these I prefer the super 89... but then again I prefer the open combs to the bars anyways... so there’s that...
I really have to purchase one of those Black beauty's. I keep looking at them and never buying one!!! I just want a metal backed one, like a 69' or 70.
It’s true what you’re saying if they keep changing the prices like that in the beginning people most likely people will give them bad reviews stick with one price and keep it !
I was looking for a thorough review of the Model T for a while, and quite frankly, I'm now more interested in the Cella products than the Model T. If you can't tell the difference, I believe there is no need to reinvent the wheel. My daily drivers are 2 slims and a Black Beauty. Very happy with them so far. Looking forward to getting a Rex by the end of the year and see if it can outperform them.
Matt, have you tried the new(ish) all metal Wilkinson Sword Double Edge Classic TTO? We can buy it over here (UK) in Tesco supermarket but I don't think you guys in the States can buy it off of the shelf yet. I think it's a brilliant shave. Mild but very effective. It would be great if you could do a review about it. Cheers, mate.
Great vid, as always, Matt. I own a gold plated 1969 O4 109. It's my birth razor and I absolutely love it. I find that it is quite aggressive, so usually go to settings 1-3. It took me a long time to find it and got it shipped from the US. I will never sell it but will make sure it goes to a good home once I leave this mortal coil. Thanks for all the information. Nice one, mate.
Nicely done Matt💈💈 How the heck did you score that razor? Next to impossible to get one, always out of stock. Oh well, at least I have a Super 109 W1😊 Shaves great on the lower settings for me. Cella, what can you say, old school, old world goodness. Super comparison shave and review👍 Enjoy!
Hello Matt. Good to hear your voice again ! Was a pleasure to have met you at your shop in AZ and then at BSW. I have the model T. Have also had the 109. I have to give it to the model T. I find it holds the blade tighter preventing blade chatter. Always seem to get some irritation from the 109/black beauty and slims but not from model T. I attribute that to clamping of the blade which model T does better. My theory on the subject. Cheers and hope we meet again.
I got the Rockwell Model T for Christmas 2021. I’m a real wet shaving guy and and have several razors. I really wanted to like the Model T; adjustable, butterfly, I thought it was awesome. But it was a terrible shaving experience! That razor left my face a bloody mess a few times. I finally realized that the blade was crooked in the head and it was just made that way. I returned it for a Rex Ambassador and have been extremely pleased with it. That being said, I still think the butterfly adjustable is pretty cool and I might try the T2.
Had the same problems with the T2, even after getting a replacement, then I gave up and exchanged it for a 6S. Their tolerances aren't up to spec, maybe that's a pandemic related drop in QC...
"When they first announced they said was going to be a solid stainless steel razor" FALSE. They stated it was going to be zinc (and some brass?). After questions/discussion in the comments by backers their manufacturer stated they could be made from brass so they went with brass and then some stainless parts (mainly the T bar assembly). After a lot of trial and error they found the brass head component just could not be kept in spec without machining each one so it had to be switched to zinc. So the T bar is stainless, the main handle tube parts are brass, the adjustment dial is either brass or zinc the head assembly/safety bar is zinc. I am unsure if the doors are zinc or brass but I would go with brass as zamac that thin is extremely weak. Rockwell did state that they were looking into the viability of a full stainless model but if it was possible it would be in the future after any issues with the Model T were worked out which is why a lot of people get confused thinking they said it would be all stainless.
Yeah, a lot of misinformation surrounding the model T. Years of different forum posts bashing Rockwell over a razor that hadn't even been in production yet. People seem to like the recent release of the model t. Seems like an improvement of the first wave that got sent out from Kickstarter backers.
Very cool. I have to agree with the points about the image taking some knocks during development and production. It made me wary, but I’m glad that it’s finally out there.
The Rockwell T is an awesome razor and yes it was a long wait. I am a headshaver and this razor gives me the smoothest and quickest shave. There is never any stubble left after shaving my head. I have used it on my face and I get the same results. I also own the 6C and it also is a great shave, but the T is much better.
Fantastic. I have a question about Porasro green in a tube. I usually apply it to my face first then use the omega boar brush. It seems to be working fine, and I get a good lather. Would it be better if I use a bowl. What’s the difference?
There is no difference in experienced hands. When first learning a new soap / cream, sometimes a bowl makes it easier to find the right balance between product and water.
Great comparison Matt, I’ve tried the entry level Rockwell (R1) but it gave me too many nicks when using it, bought the game changer .84 and gives me BBS shaves every time, no nicks or irritation. BTW I love the vintage razor segments and reviews that you do:)
Thank you for the review. Very well done. I've haven't gave much thought to new razors. It seems as wet shaving grows in popularity more people are looking for new razors and forgetting the vintage. I see this on other forums. It also seems that vintage razors on auction sites are decreasing some. Are people moving in this direction or am I over thinking this?
I've been buying / selling / trading vintage razors for 15 years and I can tell you .... they have kept their value it not gone up! There are always ebbs and flows to any commodity but vintage razors hold value if not increase it over time.
Hi Today I got an email from the Rock..Razor is ready to be shipped after 2 years. I thought about it and after a few kickbacks and watching ur video I went for it. Also II will be in contact with you,I got a Gillette Bostonian in the box that goes up.and down for $10.00.Shaves amazing and thinking of getting it a Matt overall.Even the box cleaned up.
Way too much waffle about background, and way too little commentary on the quality of the shave, which is what this video is supposed to be about, n’est ce pas?
Nice review Matt! Fun fact... The enormous Merkur Vision 2000 you mentioned was used by Edward James Olmos' Commander Adama on the ScyFy Battlestar Galactica. The razor looks right at home on a space battle cruiser.
Got my T aft 12months, endless surprising correspondance. It shaves vry well, is hefty, seems solid, but something's missing. My feeling suggests this razor in the beginning was meant somewhere different, later changes caused delay n construction parameters (maybe it misses 100% stainless).
I was witin the first 80ish backers for the model T. I was later apprehensive due to the constant postponements, lack of transparency, but the material changes were why I ultimately decided to back out. I purchased the Rex Ambassador just after and I have been very pleased thus far.
Great video, thanks a lot! Your channel, Ohio shaves and Geo Fatboy give me so much inspiration.... And perhaps a little fatherly advice, love and support I've never received. Bought the Rockwell 6C, the razor absolutely rocks for me, with all the blades I've tried so far (Astra green, Gillette platinum, Wilkinson Sword). The Rockwell 6C is so unbelievable mild, gentle and effective at the same time, for me with numbers 1 and 2, my favourite plate numbers (I understand for you as experts probably not your favourite settings...🙂). I wonder if the T2 can be sort of the same gentle as the 6C. But for now the 6C is perfect for me, still learning every time....🙂 Also very eager to try the Twig razor....(sorry, not the topic). Thanks very much and kind regards and best wishes from the Netherlands!!
Great shave and showdown of razors, I want to get one of those Rockewell Model T, but they always seem to be sold out on the website, will just have to wait until they become available also love that Cella soap, the scent is awesome and it lathers up really well as you know - cheers
