I respect what you are saying, however, I switched back to DE shaving about 5 years ago. I learned to shave on a DE from my Dad then when I went to college, I went with the herd and used "cheap" (in quality) disposable razors. I order the DE blades 100 at a time and they cost right around $25 and last about a year. I like to shave in the shower and I get a much better shave and enjoy the process, but that does make it difficult to shave with a dress shirt and a tie on. @oleoblue

As a black male, I’d completely given up in wet shaving. This is also encouraged in the black community because of our genetic disadvantages in relation to the texture and curly hair patterns. For years I refused to accept that my course/curly hair would disqualify me from shaving. A problem 2/3 of all black men suffer from. In college, like Mr. Allison, I discovered wet shaving with a double edge razor. I now look forward to wet shaving every single morning, years later. I now spend my time encouraging younger black males the best way to shave, who’ve been misinformed about the art of wet shaving

“Financially obscene” - couldn’t have said it better myself. Transitioned to wet shaving with a double edged blade back in college. Never looked back. And have to say, great short haha Agree with Astra, have a few battle wounds from Feather blades. Would also recommend Barrister and Mann, they have some pretty impressive shaving soaps.

@@kirbyallison9596 Completely agree. My shave is consistently superior and much cleaner with a double-edge razor. Over Thanksgiving I was traveling to see family and didn't bring my Merkur (i use a closed comb, owned the same one for ~7 years and love it) because I only had carry-on luggage and it was a quick trip. I opted to get a Gillette 5 blade when I landed, which was the first time I hadn't double-edge shaved in maybe 1-1.5 years. After one full shave with the 5 blade, the razor-burn I got along my neck and jawline was horrendous. Honestly, to me, that is the most beneficial part of a double-edge shave. Compared to a 5 blade, when you make 2 passes with a double-edged razor your skin only sees 2 razor passes. With a 5 blade, your skin just saw 10....it's a world of difference. The double edge, in my experience, leaves a cleaner, crisper shave. The only caveat to double-edge shaving is that there is a learning curve. Transitioning from a 3-5 blade to a double edge takes some getting used to (differences in pressure, angling of the razor, the hand-feel, speed, etc.), but the return is so much better and it's a more enjoyable experience (IMO).

@@TheRflynn traditionally worn with a shirt and tie for example just watch any old film and you will see it. I feel it was more convenience if you’re always wearing a suit and you just came from going out it’s easier to take the blazer off and slip into the dressing gown instead of taking the shirt and tie off because normally you will end up having to go out again so it’s rather convenient just needing to take off the gown and put on your blazer instead of putting the full suit on again.

Hi Kirby. I enjoyed watching the video on wet shaving. I've moved from cartridge razors to a safety razor about a year ago, when I got myself a Rockwell Razor (which can be adjusted according to your hair-type) as a Kickstarter reward. I've started thoroughly enjoying the wet shaving experience since then. I look forward to your upcoming video series on wet shaving. Thank you. Ketan

Hi, Kirby! I switched to wet shaving from cartridge shaving around a year ago and I’ll never go back. I enjoy artisan shave soaps from companies such as Stirling, Barrister & Mann, and Noble Otter. Omega makes some great beginner badger brushes as well. For beginning wet shavers who might not be ready for an aggressive open comb or a slant, two more forgiving options are the Edwin Jagger DE-89 and Merkur 34-C.

Getting into wet shaving is one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself. I began with an Edwin Jagger DE closed comb razor 5 years ago. I now alternate between Merkur closed comb razors. I love Proraso products for their quality and affordability. I use their sensitive skin line almost exclusively. I swear by their preshave. As someone with sensitive skin and coarse facial hair, it has saved my face. I use their cream and after shave too. No scent so it won’t collide with my cologne. I don’t have a favorite blade type. I like Feather and Personna. Get a sample pack and play around. I upgraded to a Simpson Case brush a few years ago. Handmade in the U.K. for 50 bucks. Stypic pen is also a must for cuts. As you perfect your technique, you’ll barely Knick yourself. Let the razor do the work. I owe it to myself to try some new creams this year. If you are on the fence about wet shaving, and are dissatisfied with Mach 14’s and canned shaving creams, take the plunge. My skin looks and feels so much better. For 75-100 bucks, you can get the entire kit needed, and be good for literally years. Good luck!

Great intro video Kirby; I also enjoy wet shaving a great deal. While starting out with a value mindset, I ended up with probably 10 different shave soaps and creams! The variety in scent, glide, and experience is phenomenal and definitely adds to the enjoyment of an otherwise mundane activity. I use a Merkur myself also, the Classic with a custom knurled handle for additional grip. The handle really added to the experience, surprisingly. If you ever get a chance to try out the Russian Voskhod blade, I'd recommend it. Amazingly smooth yet still sharp enough, might pair well with that aggressive Muehle R41 that you use. I have the Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandlewood shave soap. I found their products to be wonderful and aromatic. Keep up the good work; I absolutely love your videos and look forward to them. Can't wait for the Carmina review videos especially; I have a pair of their oxfords that came with the JR sole, as well as a brown suede chukka boot from their sister company Meermin.

First of all the dollar club parody was excellent enjoyed the video on wet shaving very much I myself have been a "old school" wet shaving guy now for about 2 1/2 years and like you mention the experience is just remarkable I had often toyed with the idea of wet shaving but the fear of cutting myself multiple times just kept me from doing it until I read an article that gave the pro's and con's of wet shaving with a safety razor vs using a multiple blade razor as always thanks for the informative video.

I agree with Kirby Allison 110%. Wet shaving with a good safety razor and soaps and brushes is one of the best shaves and luxuries a man can do for himself. It is much better for your skin and your face and can produce a very close shave with the right technique and care. I have been Wet Shaving for over 10 years and would never go back to cartridge shaving again. The initial cost of getting started can be a little pricey, but if you look at the long term cost of even a year down the road you will be saving money and it only gets less expensive as you go. I shave with both vintage safety razors and straight razors. I find it a wonderful, and relaxing way to start my day and gets me ready to face my work ahead.

Yes Kirby sum other important accessories for me are an alum block and Thayers witch hazel lotion I prefer the medicated one but unfortunately it is going out of production but there are plenty of other Thayers witch hazel lotions to choose from. For a pre shave I mix my own concoction but Proraso also make some very good pre shaves as do Edwin Jagger Truefitt and Hill and TOBS of course.

I shave with a straight razor, and I quite enjoy the experience (I also use a shaving soap instead of cream). I used to use a styptic pen when I cut myself shaving, but I quite a while back. I cut my cheek one time and used a styptic pen to stop the bleeding, but it left a small scar. I had cut myself similarly prior to getting the pen and since I stopped using the pen, and none of them have ever scarred. I found that cuts with such a sharp razor, they often heal quickly and don't bleed for very long.

After switching to proper shaving methods a couple of years ago, for me with very thick beard, the Muhle R41 and Feather blades works the best. I get very close and clean shaves in a short amount of time, even with several days of growth. Very rarely cut myself, and if it happens it's always on the corner of my mouth if I go a little too fast. For me, it's way better overall than cartridge razors, no matter what price range. My face feels like a baby's bottom nowadays, whereas before I very easily got rashes. At the moment I switch between Proraso shaving soap and some expensive Portugese brand which names escape me. Muhle silver tipped badger brush.

Awesome short! I have to say though, you look good with that beard. I have a completely unrelated question for you. How long should a jar of Saphir Renovator last? I use it once a week on one shoe in my collection and a jar barely lasts one four month rotation. I live north of you in Kansas and our weather changes rather rapidly, so I like knowing that my shoes won't be negatively impacted by our weather. Your guidance is greatly appreciated.

I recently went to a double edge razor. I bought the one from Baxter of California, a company that I’ve been using for skin products for years. I also use their cream shave. The razors that came with it were the brand Derby. So I basically kept ordering those. I also bought a Parker straight razor that uses replaceable blades to practice that art. I use a Baxter badger brush as well. I have no complaints, really, other than it takes practice and it’s not that easy. I still have my old Gillette Sensor, and Fusion, but I only use them if I missed a spot, so I really don’t buy cartridges for them anymore. I’m open to trying new products. Kiehls used to make this stuff called Pre-Shave Oil. It was the best. You used it very sparingly, and it would prepare the skin for the cream shave. It’s been discontinued, but it really was a great product. Another brand I used for cream shave was Santa Maria Novella. Kinda pricy, but very good products as well. Shaving with safety razors definitely takes practice and patience, but the shave is better. No doubt. Also, I feel like your beard grows out slower when you shave this way.
@Todd.T
@Todd.T 5 лет назад
Do yourself a favor and use other brands of blades. Derby's are inconsistent. Some hack your face up until they wear down a bit. Astra are as cheap but a bit thinner, very consistent. Thinner blades, or blades that flex more dull a bit faster, but are a bit sharper. In my findings, Derby are a bit thicker, very inconsistent, and last about 5 shaves. Merkur blades are almost the same. Astra is slightly thinner, way more consistent and good for about 4 shaves. Feather blades are thick and VERY sharp. If you are shaving with a feather and encounter any facial anomaly, expect it to be REMOVED and oh yes, there will be blood. My personal favorite is Bolzano. I would encourage all to step up into the higher price range and try a pack. VERY consistent and pretty sharp, similar to Asta. Thicker an non fixing, it is not unheard of to go eight shaves on one blade before replacing. Most blades hit their stride on shave 2/3 while Bolzanos are great right out of the box. I use my blades in a Rockwell R1 (great for beginners or if you are doing touchups or really want to hurry). An Edwin Jagger DE 98L which is a fairly safe razor. Next up is a more aggressive Razo Rock three piece open comb, whereby the open comb design allows more blade contact on the face in between the comb teeth. Finally, and most aggressively, I have the Razo Rock Torshionshobel open comb slant bar. If you could hold the blade in a par of pliers and shave, this would be it. Don't use a feather blade in the last one on the list without 911 on speed dial...
@MarioMateo
@MarioMateo 5 лет назад
Todd T Hey, thanks for the recomendations. I will definitely give those other blades a try. I’ve been using the Baxter of California razor, and I have been replacing the Derby blades every shave or every other shave. I thought that’s what you were supposed to do. Didn’t know they can last up to 5 shaves.

Mr. Alison, Maybe your best video! I really enjoyed it, especially the part for the thousand dollar club! Also, your image getting shaved with your tie ON, was magnificent! Concerning the products, TOBS is really great, it is my personal preference, together with D R Harris hard shaving soap. Nevertheless, I have to say that the brush you are using in the parts you are getting shaved, it must be an omega boar brush, and I think it is not the best for shaving creams! Badger hair brush is much better. I would also like to mention that for traveling, Edwin Jagger, offers a very nice pack for your DE razor that also has places for two packs of blades. For shaving soap sticks,I prefer D R Harris, because they offer a great variety of scents for their soaps. Last but not least, when I travel, I prefer synthetic brushes, especially the muhle synthetic silvertip, because they dry easier than badgers and it is not good for the bristles to be packed if not dried before. Mühle offers also a brush that the handle is prepared for becoming a protective pack for traveling purposes. By the way, next week I am visiting London and George Cleverlys shop is one of my destinations!

Kirby Allison that does seem a bit much to disinfect a 30 cent blade, I’ll definitely change it more often! I’m on shave 5 so I was kinda just playing it by ear until it felt like it didn’t want to be smooth anymore

Santa Maria Novella shave cream and aftershave emulsion... I know they aren't for sale on your website. But you are clearly familiar with them as they show up in your video

Kirby, do you actually wake up in the morning and put on a white collared shirt and tie prior to shaving? I do like the paisley smoking jacket! All kidding aside, I look forward to your shaving techniques videos. Cheers, B.

Barrister & Mann, Stirling Soap Co. and Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements make top quality soaps and aftershaves. I started with the famous English brands, but these artisan make better products I think.

For anyone looking to learn more about safety razor shaving I can recommend this article: How to shave like your grandpa - www.artofmanliness.com/articles/how-to-shave-like-your-grandpa/ Personally I prefer the straight razor shave. Anyone interested in that you can find an article here: Shave Like Your Great Grandpa - www.artofmanliness.com/articles/how-to-straight-razor-shave/ There are also instruction video's on there on both ways of shaving.

An excellent video, the multi blade has done for shaving what digital has done for sound a trash triumph,keep the faith and find anice safety razor and agood soap or cream,your choices of accessories re Taylors are excellent,especially their wonderful lemon and lime and sandlewood for autumn and winter.. A good razor is like a good turntable,it will do you if looked after for life. Budget but excellent are the Sapone Proraso products and the excellent soaps from your Turkish Barbers Their wonderful lemon Eau deColognes are a lovely post shave splash.I have at least 2 barber shaves a week,its theprice of agood cigar and far more healthy A wonderful video

This is why I started laser hair removal up to the jaw.
@krollic
@krollic 5 лет назад
that's an interesting idea. what do you think of laser hair removal on areas like the upper cheeks, to the side of the eyes and around/between the eyebrows?
@MBisFrenchy
@MBisFrenchy 5 лет назад
krollic As long as your hair is dark enough and you aren't too tan I don't see why that can't be taken care of. Women get rid go their mustaches. If you don't grow much of a beard you could in theory get rid of the whole thing. But laser is patchy as your hair changes sections that will react to it. First few times a lot more hair came out. It takes years to get pretty smooth and you will still have some small patches probably but a lot less density.

@@MBisFrenchy mmhm. I imagine that it also accumulates a very substantial cost over time with all the appointments required. I am capable of growing a full beard and my hair is very dark and my skin is very pale; while I'm happy with that, it makes the stray hairs I mentioned before (which I get a lot of) extremely obvious to the point where I have to pluck them every couple of days which I'm getting sick of; they bloody HURT especially around the eyes.

krollic Maybe wax strips? Yes it can be pricy but you go every 6-8 weeks. It feels like sharp picks when they use the laser.

Gotta say you know your stuff but I was going to buy some shaving products from your website until I started comparing prices. Your Astra blades are $30 vs the giant big box store price of $13 for the exact same product. That turned me off. Maybe yours is more expensive due to how much you buy/sell but even still I refuse to spend money needlessly if there is a better deal out there. I'm sure the same holds true for the rest of the products on your site so I will steer clear and do my shopping elsewhere

Saw that. Hate it. Do yourself the favor and switch to a double-edge razor. Not only will you be able to maintain your dignity and masculinity, you'll get a better shave.
