I will definitely test it out. Even if the time were the same, there’s so much less physical stress on your hands… And my hands are getting old and tired!

The technique worked very well, the occasional one would have the scape section bend, but the "whack" still loosened the head so the cloves separated easily. It was very satisfying!

Very satisfying! It just falls apart after it pops!

@@TheHomesteadatFlatrock Would you recommend any fertilizer for the soil. I have a 4 by 10 foot bed with about 9 inches of screened soil. The soil contains some last years kelp, some this years fish guts etc. When I screened the soil 2 weeks ago there were maggots in it from the fish waste put into it this summer. I mean maybe 14 buckets of bones. heads etc. Which is almost gone to nothing. Also put cardboard in the bottom of the bed but after a heavy rain 2 weeks ago the bed filled with water. So have raised the bed 1 inch off the ground. I expect some soil to leach out . So to sum up this because am sure you are busy. What fertilizer would you recommend , should I remove the cardboard, do you think the maggots will hurt ? Thank you for any reply

I usually spread 1 cup of blood meal per 20 sq ft, same for bone meal. typically top dress with several inches of compost containing chicken manure, I mulch with a few inches of maple leaves when ever they’re available and use a few boughs to keep them from blowing away!

BTW, when I get small bulbs that I can’t use or market, then I plant all those bulbs in a small area of the garden and make green garlic pesto once the leaves grow to about 12” tall. I snip off the root and use the whole plant. It commands a very high dollar in a local specialty shop I supply. Could be a good way to make a few extra dollars for your undersize garlic… But there is extra work involved lol.

Definitely gonna try this, and I bet you are right about less damage to the clove wrappers. Thanks!
@TheHomesteadatFlatrock
@TheHomesteadatFlatrock 2 года назад
Yes try it! Just make sure when you process your bulbs next summer you leave a 2-2.5” stub on your garlic bulb! Let me know when you try it! You’ll love it!

@@TheHomesteadatFlatrock I already did, since I haven't cut the stubs short. It worked perfectly, gonna try some big bulbs when these are eaten.

Just plant the whole bulb... save some time.
@garthwunsch
@garthwunsch 2 года назад
That won’t work very well. It will just give you lots of small cloves, which if you’re trying to make green garlic pesto in the spring would be fine, but not so fine if you want to have real Garlic to sell… Or to use at home.

@@garthwunsch Works great actually for home use. Probably not for selling. The cloves are a bit smaller but not unusably small. I actually was surprised the first time this happened. I had left a clove or 12 lol in the ground and the next season I was really surprised to see how much it actually produced.

@@garthwunsch agreed, it wont work that well for commercial application which this garlic is headed for. However as Nat below mentions it could work well for home use. I am planning on adding garlic as a perennial in our food forest project. SHould be interesting to see how the bulbs size up and the root mass propagates every year.
