What’s Better Firewood Bundles or Bags? Bagging vs Wrapping.

Mother and daughter work together bagging and bundling firewood for Megan’s new roadside stand. Our daughter decided to set up a roadside stand to earn some money for college. So now we have to decide what’s best for her bags or bundles. This video is a little bit about making them. A future video will show what sells better. Then we will make our decision as to what works better for us in our area. We are working with less than bundle grade wood here and have a few issues with our bagging process as well as with our borrowed bundle wrapping machine. We will definitely improve our process as we move forward in this business venture.

Hey y'all, I'm not a business major but I want to throw in my two cents, it would be interesting to check the weight of both bundles? As far as the wrapping machine goes, if you take off the wheels and mount it to a skid that would take care of trying to counter balance the whole machine. Megan, your Best business teacher's come from your parents and how they are supporting your idea. That is what you call free enterprise. Best of luck!

Great job 👏 Meagan and Rachel! I believe your issue with the bundler is that the gear ratio is all wrong. I think the gear on the bundle side needs to be bigger than the handle side. Because the way it is the more times you turn the handle the tighter the wrap around the bundles get tighter and tighter each round you make. Keep up the great work you all do and have a blessed day!

Might have the drive sprocket reduced by about 25% to reduce the starting effort. Working on a suggestion for making the bagger to horizontal to use the weight of the wood to to help compact the contents. Would reduce shoulder stress as well. Cut the bucket on one side opposite the handle & round the bottom two sides of the slit opening so it wont have edges to catch on the bag. This will make it easier and faster to put bag over bucket and will also expand to fill the bag.

Hey guys! Yeah, the bundler needs some work, but at least it makes nice tight bundles. As for the bats, we had a problem with a couple many years ago. @Alan_Hans__ Год назад
Not sure if my favourite bit was Megan dropping a "let's go" and striking a cheer pose or the bit of a squeal when the first wrap was begun. Work smarter, not harder. Put the stacking table behind where the tote and bundler are and the cart should be closing the gap between the bundler and the table. When starting to wrap if you wind anticlockwise a little to take tension off the wrap and then start wrapping you'll have inertia in your favour when starting. If you hang a bundle on each side of the bundler then that may do the job of the counterweight. We get bats inside on a semi regular basis. There's a bakery over the road that runs 24/7 and the bats eat the insects that hang around the security lighting. In 30 years of being here we've probably had 20 or more bats make their way inside.

I found bags and the bucket thing is easier if it’s done lower like on a chair. I also use a larger round bucket screwed to a base as a jig/holder for the bag and bucket. So when you pull the bucket out the bag does not fall over as you put the last few chunks in. Good video keep up the good work.

Store manager claims that Petite women, elderly and physically compromised people will help themselves to two bundles of the 14 lb. Wood. While Half as many people opt for the 22 pound bags. People shop where the have a choice. * Most important ! One handed size splits * Some of the splits you were carrying, you used both hands. If you can't use one hand it doesn't go in to the bag or the bundle.. Big would is boiler wood that's a whole nother demographic.

@hardworkingmanoutdoors
@hardworkingmanoutdoors Год назад
Jeff, I think you should be getting close, I know a few people who ordered a little before you just got theirs. Not sure as supply issues could vary from model to model but as far as the wedges go, it all depends on what you want as a finished product. The original 6 way makes larger sized splits more boiler wood sized. The 8 way makes small pieces great for bundles and roadside stands. Bobby now has a newer design of the 6 way that appears to be in between the 2, that may be your best bet!

The reason you have bats you don't have a chimney cap to keep animals out so many home owners wonder why. I have removed birds. ,raccoons, snakes and a few other things from chimneys put a cap on to save money and cost of a removal fee and other expenses.

We do have a chimney cap but I am wondering it it somehow got dislodged or something. I will climb up to check for sure.

@hardworkingmanoutdoors make sure that the metal screen is tightly wrapped around so that there is no gap of any kind and tighten the clamp down. Most people will forget this step .When I bought my place it didn't have one. People thought that I was crazy both of my neighbors have called on me to help them out with birds and raccoons out of their's and make sure that the spark arrestor is not weak or any gaps in it.

Thank you. Will definitely check, also now that I think of it I believe their is another chimney in the same chimney of that makes sense for our upper fireplace which we do not use that doesn’t have a cap. I will address it right away!

Rachel tell Meagan there a lot more money into strawberries 🍓 for 6 wk work . In big 🇨🇦 is $7 quart. Just put up 🔝 a U pick at old property for grown strawberries 🍓. Remember bbq smoke pork tenderloin you need dessert 🍨 after the meal . 😊 went I was Meagan age or younger I make big money grown strawberries 🍓 and it’s fast money 💵 plus tax free from farming or fishing save on account free . Firewood 🪵 is tax up here 15% on the dollar. 😢😢

Leonard, our gardens don’t tend to do to well. A buddy of mine has a Strawberry farm though and he does well.

I think both the bag and bundle is a bad way to buy wood , like buying washed carrots , makes it over priced .

It’s definitely a convince but not a value buy. But they sure sell, and at higher margins.

Put your wrap in the middle of the bundle, and then you wouldn't have to hold it.

Our daughter Megan. She decided she wants to set up a roadside stand to earn some $$ so we are teaching her how to run everything.

Are you 2 paid by the hour ?....or by the amount of bundled wood you perduce?...how much you charge per bundle ?...so far you wrapped 3 bundles... If a person wants 12 bundles you likely say come back tomorrow?

Actually teaching our daughter how to make bundles and testing a piece of equipment for the first time. We ended up with $160/bundles in under an hour with sub par Wood so I’d say not too bad for a trial run. Megan will be selling the bundles and the $$ is hers to keep.

in my opinion wrapping is way way better then bagging.. The reason is I can see what I am buying and bags are that much harder to get rid of.. I hate to tell you but their is a few people and companies making that same bundle.. Their is even plans for that bundler online... Their is a Amish company that you can buy then online that seem to be built a little stronger then that 1... This bundle you are showing looks like a prototype on how cheap can you make it!!! Sorry

No offense taken. I’m not even sure the guy who built this even plans on building them to sell. Just built it for a friend on request. He has never built or used a bundler before and knows there’s areas to improve on with it. I’d say with a few modifications it wouldn’t be a bad lower production rig though. Still beats the hand wrapping way I had tried in the past.

I've always been a glove guy so it pains me to see you handle wood with bare hands. I would have major slivers.

We use gloves a lot, but figured with the plastic wrap it would be better without them.

Meagan don’t start out in the hole in equipments, Rachel or mom is right start with a plastic bucket 🪣. Get your money 💴 in the bank first them go the business. 😊
