I often wonder about the reliability of these mechanisms. I'll be putting some serious miles on my Model 3, and like everyone else in the same boat, I'll have to find out how time and mileage will play out based on these engineers' decisions. Everything seems impressive for now, but my biggest concern is whether these relatively untested technologies will hold up long-term.

Hi. I have a 23 model Y that the steering wheel sticks to the right after a turn or lane change and isn't recentering the wheel. In other words, I'm left to have to manually try to recenter the steering which makes for a very annoyingly jerky ride. My model 3 and other model Ys I've driven do not do this. Any idea why this may be? Tesla shops have no clue what they're doing.

Is it after every turn/lane change or only under autopilot?

Is there any chance you can show where the steering rack grounding wire is connected? I’ve read about ground wire corrosion leading to power steering loss in these and would love to be able to check.

@IngioMontoyFA we just checked it out and recorded it for you. Will upload shortly. There are two grounding wires on the left strut tower (note: on right hand drive vehicle in Australia, not sure if swapped for US market)

Do you see anything that would allow my rack to make a clacking sound like a rattling ball in a paint can? Is there a washer, or seal, that closes off a hole through which the balls were installed? I think I have an inadequate number of balls, or some have worked out of the recirculating ball nut. I hear the balls falling as the nut/gear turns. Any idea of what may be going on? If I open it up and find the problem, Tesla will void the warranty.

Hey @TheTubeByron, it's difficult to diagnose over the internet but yes, it could be the steering rack. If you determine it is the steering rack, we'd recommend replacing it either with a new or second hand one. It's a complex system for safety reasons not worth trying to repair it. Under what condition is the noise occurring? Could you link a video?

@@denstoj Wow, thanks for the response. The original noise/feel is a click in the steering wheel when I straighten the wheel after backing out of garage. Thought is was something in steering column. Under hood, listening, it is from the rack, right where the recirculating ball gear is. The noise was with a guitar tuning transducer attached to that area. From all videos I have seen, the recirculating balls are packed too close to have that much freedom to move. On the one you took apart, is there a washer pressed in, or locked in with circlip that could come out and make that sound hopping over each thread?

No problem, happy to help. I'd have to check again if there is a washer. Have you checked the steering column shaft universal joints and bolts are tight?
@TheTubeByron
@TheTubeByron Год назад
@@denstoj Yes. I started at the bottom of steering column and noticed the sound in the rack. The noise in steering wheel doesn't really bother me. The idea of something loose inside the rack does. Thanks.

@@TheTubeByron no problem. Probably best to replace the rack then. Wouldn’t it still be under warranty?
