Awesome! Another thing we added was a zoom tool in the toolbox. You can drag and zoom to selection...as well as a pan tool in the toolbox that some people seemed to want
Can you paint tiles in Krita like in Pro Motion? Example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AM30pMxMWYo.html Because if it doesn't, it should!
+allluckyseven Yes you can, but not exactly as in pro-motion. There's a wrap-around painting mode to paint the tiles, so it does what you can see in the bottom right corner, but you're only painting on 1 tile. It's very powerful, used by both game artists and 3d artists for tiling textures. Then you can also do what is shown in the video with array/clone layers.
Thank you so much! the speed improvement is wellcome. Krita its for me the best designed software for concept artists, i like the control it gives. keep the good work thanks, from Lisbon !
Glad it tickled your curiosity! You'll see, it's a really nice program. You have a sizable list of tutorials there already: gdquest.com/game-art-quest/volume-1/krita-tutorial-for-game-artists/
You're welcome! It may not seem like it at first, but when you start to dive deep in its feature-set, Krita is really impressive, despite its shortcomings.
These sketch brushes (and of course, the brush engine) are amazing! And all the features to help in game art plus a lot of cool stuff! After using it I fell a little disappointed with the lack of innovation and basic features for game art in Photoshop from the last 5 years I'm using it. Is a challenge even to do something as common nowadays as to paint seamless textures.
I think krita is as good as photoshop when it comes to drawing and painting... Even though photoshop users are so used to it and don't always want to try new programs... But to me, krita is perfect and its open source ! Wich is really important to me. Though, I get your point its not the best for video games (but I'm not concerned so... good for me lol)
It's just lacking a handful of things, and there's always room for improvements with any programs. But with the Python API around the corner, it should really make it a great pick for indie game studios: the main thing it's lacking now is a robust system to batch export sprites, and thankfully scripts are great at that!
Is that a modified version of the reference docker you're using? It's so seamless, I wish I knew how to get it. [EDIT] whoops nevermind I think I found out what you're using! Gonna try out Pureref coz it looks great!
wow, that is a lot of new features. I am so glad that brush lag has been dealt with, I will surely give Krita another go. I un-installed Krita 2.9 because it was unusable due to the lag... but otherwise it had many great features I liked. Now Krita 3.0 has gone even further. whoopee
I have a small problem. When Im editing my frames and all that I can see my cursor but when I go to animate/draw my cursor disappears and that makes it super hard to draw! Is there a way to fix that?
I have a question concerning the speed of brush like the airbrushing tool. It's very slow and takes a while for the brush to keep up with brush strokes. Is there a way to speed it up?
It's definitely already good as a paint program. But I suspect some types of animation will still be very difficult to work out without some form of audio track with scrubbing in the timeline. (Dunno if that'll ever come to Krita, but it certainly helps in some other animation programs like Flash or ToonBoom.)
It's planned, but it's all a matter of funding. It's one of the current kickstarter's stretch goals: www.kickstarter.com/projects/krita/krita-2016-lets-make-text-and-vector-art-awesome
Very nice in-depth review! I also enjoyed your commentary very much. Thanks! I love Krita on Linux. Donated them money recently, and backed their current kickstarter project. You should too!
Hey, I'm already a krita user but I've mostly used it for painting and drawing. I'm now about to start making game graphics for a 8bit style action-platformer, should I keep using Krita? Or use... spriter or... I dunno.
You can use Krita, yes. There are now a handful of pixel art presets by default, and I made a tutorial about that some time ago: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3DOmnpKQITm3.htmlI / Now, there's another open source program that's dedicated to pixel art, and really good: Aseprite - www.aseprite.org/ - Good in conjunction with Krita, as you can still use Krita for HD index painting and compositing.
I have a question: can I use these artwork (created by Krita) in Unity3D? Actually, I am beginning to learn to game artwork for a storytelling game. Is it a good option to use Krita in this regard? Thank you. Looking forward to hearing from you :)
It's a premium brush pack I'm building up month after month: gdquest.com/krita-brushes-for-game-artists/ It costs a few €, but I'll certainly run a giveaway in the future on Twitter, if you're interested :) - right now it's just v0.1, 6 presets, so it's not too interesting. But more coming +/- monthly!
How did you have the reference image floating there on the left? I tried to do that but haven't found out how. The only thing i know about is the img ref docker, but it's not the same thing as a clean image floating. Also if you simply import the img into the canvas i cant be moved outside of the drawing area, so not sure what you did...
For illustration purposes would you recommend Krita or Photoshop better? And which do you think has a better brush engine? I currently use Photoshop a I'm wondering if I should change to Krita.
Krita is easier to use than Photoshop overall for illustration, as it really focuses on that. I wouldn't say it's plain better - it depends on your exact needs. But for illustration, it's quite pleasant to use. You have quite a few krita tuts on the channel to get started, so why not give it a try? Some 3-4 hours, and see for yourself!
I have a little problem in 3.0 64bit portable version. I can't change the language (to Spanish). Is this happening only to me? or is natural by the moment in this version?
Not sure what you mean. You can select the content of a layer (Right click on the layer->select opaque) and then Edit -> Stroke selection. Is that what you're looking for?\
It's rarely worth it to draw on paper and then scan the document. So I tend to do everything on the computer, and sometimes just study with pen, paper and books.
How do you save your files on Krita 3? because whenever I save a picture and try to open that file again, it says that it cant find the software required to open it.
Worth exploring. If you are still wondering whether to try Krita or some other alternatives, here you can find more short videos of some of Krita's innovative features: www.polydraw.com/blog/krita-highlights. Thumbs up to Krita's team :)
Qt5, a big library Krita relies on, currently has a bug on Windows, that makes it so panels don't appear in fullscreen. The developers took the option out temporarily because of that.
I appreciate these videos, it's hard to wade through changelogs for what's new/different. Krita is finally becoming a valid competitor to other solutions. I couldn't use it before due to the extreme performance issues. For those wanting to use skeletal animation check out DragonBones (dragonbones.github.io/index.html), it's free. I recently found out about it. It currently lacks z-order animation though there are workarounds for it and the developers are working on it.
Ah, I knew that dragonbones would convert spine anims and all, but didn't know it was an open source animation package. Thanks for the heads up! Gonna follow its progress :)
+GDquest You mentioned that Krita may not quite serve as a full replacement to other solutions such as Photoshop. You should consider making a video explaining what it's missing and how that affects game development. That would easier for people make an informed decision as to whether it would serve them since you know Krita and game development and would be able to break it down.
LevityMire I'm planning to do that in article format actually, but only in a few weeks. Another video of this kind would take too much time off creating actual course material.
You need the freehand brush tool to be selected. If it doesn't show up at first, switch to any other tool and come back to the brush, the option should appear.
All you gotta do is download the appimage from their website (appimage is like the linux version of an EXE file), right click the file, and check the "is executable" checkbox, and then you can just double click that file to run it c: you can also create shortcuts to it as well!
I have a slight problem with mine. I installed it and i have windows 10, but the application wont open, like at all as much as i click on it. I have a system error that says libkritaui.dll is missing.. and idk what to do?
i got krita 3.0 and everytime i try to open/make a new canvas/document it always crashes and says that krita has stopped working.is it the same for you and everyone else or just me?
Did you try deactivating openGL? Go into the settings menu -> configure Krita and in the display category, uncheck openGL. i.imgur.com/X9Ve0t9.png Krita works for the majority of people, but there are still some bugs and crashes the developers are working on.
Snapping works with vectors, that's the one thing that changed in that area. Then, the developers are focusing on vector and text after the 3.1 release in September.
Well, with a package manager, you should be able to easily update it - that's especially true on Linux. On Windows, you have a package manager called Chocolatey, where you can find Krita - but only stable versions.
just downloaded it and everytime I create a new file the pen calibration on my cintiq happens to be HORRIBLE D: the cursor is several millimeters under the pen tip.... Never had this problem with any other versio of krita... I'm upset
I don't have this issue here, with a Cintiq 13"hd. That's strange. You should get in touch with the developers, they'll help you fix that the best they can.
GDquest Hey, thanks for answering! :D Yeah I already did - we're still trying to solve it. If anyone is facing the same problem, here is the thread: forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=137&t=131048&p=358250#p358250 Hopefully we can find a solution. For now I downgraded to 2.9 again and it workes just perfectly fine.
Funny you said that. I just got my Cintiq 13hd today and I kinda had this problem until i realized i was clicking on the toggle window button by mistakes so check that out. Everything's perfect for me now.
Infact its not thatIf your Cintiq isn't permanently on you will need to recaliberate everytime you reconnect. And you might have to try again several times. Try to aim at the middle of the target
Krita is a free software (costs no money, and open source). Until I release a video tutorial for it, it's all explained in the user manual: docs.krita.org/Animation
woohoo; can't wait for krita 3 and you are not helping :D anyway, there is still 20 days remaining in 2016 Krita Kickstarter. Lets make vectors and text tools awesome :)
I think it's one of the planned features, one that should come out around august. Right now, you can export as a frame sequence and use a free tool like shoebox to build your spritesheet though.
Any idea where I can find a list for the GPU's supporting OpenGL 3? I've no idea why I couldn't find it on my own (my Google-Fu must be getting weaker). I found one on Nvidia's site, but it didn't mention GTX cards. I'm fairly sure if GeForce 8800 can run it, my GTX 560 can, too, but I wanna be sure.
Krita has come a long way.. This already proves that Photoshop isn't the top APP for artists any longer.. I wouldn't be surprised if Krita becomes more then just a painting software..
Actually, the Krita project started as a general image editor, a bit like Gimp. But the developers had a good idea when they decided to focus on artists. Photoshop is really powerful when it comes to general image manipulation - and it's good for art/illustration too, but it offers a ton of options that artists probably won't need. With its focus on drawing, Krita offers a pretty friendly environment. I think that's its main strength.
No. The instant preview makes it faster than PS for painting in some configurations, but a small team like Krita's can't compete with 100+ full time engineers as far as performances are concerned. Yet it got so much faster, you should give it a try!
I was wondering about that since the kickstarter page says than "let's make it faster than Photoshop!". I tried it an appimage time ago and it was working very fast for what I saw
On Windows you download the new version on their website and install it -> krita.org/en/download/krita-desktop/ On Linux your app library should let you download the new version automatically
Yes, and the next release will be the first official stable one - Check out the bottom of this post: krita.org/en/item/new-stable-and-development-builds/
Probably because I record audio and video separately. In that case, it's based on a (long) written script. When I record the audio, I'm just reading a script. It's not spontaneous. Then, I'm creating an education channel. I really don't want the videos to be like entertainment. That's why I don't upload art time-lapses for instance.
