@@TrailReconPlease help, I need advice. I just bought a 2014 Willys 2 door that was driven in the North. There’s a lot of rust underneath. The stock shocks are even rusted. I have 7 days to return. Should I and avoid the headache? For reference, mind is worst than what you showed in your vid. It has 65k miles.
I've been following you for a long time now. As many have mentioned, having the whole family involved is amazing, and I have to say that I think a lot of your success is due to the closeness of your family. While I began watching for the wheeling and overlanding, I kept watching because of you've kept the whole family involved. You are a great role model for your viewers. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I'm very fortunate that Regena and my boys share my same passion and it's a privilege to be able to share our time in the garage and on the trail with you all.
@@rubiconadventurewithscotty3258 With all these newer vehicles having so many electronic controls for everything, all of them are bigger projects than we like to believe. Sounds like they have a pretty solid foundation with that Willys edition, though.
The 0623 tag is the annual safety inspection in Hawaii! Awesome thing to see on there, especially a recent one. It was probably owned by someone in the military that got transferred back to the mainland! Might be a little surface rust but the wear and tear on parts is going to be pretty low with the low speeds on island! Nice find!
Forgot to mention if you wanted to keep the tag on the back of the Jeep they do make a bracket that bolts behind the license plate to get it up out of the way
16:44 I have a ’13 JKU Sport with zero power options, windows, locks or mirrors (grumpy old man voice - AND I LIKE IT!!). A few weeks back I picked up a buddy and his junior high age grandson. I had the freedom panels off and jr. was in the back. I told him to roll down the windows and he couldn’t figure out how. He had never seen a manual crank window before in his life. Young’uns!! 🤣
All 08-18 JK's had a D44 in back. Only 07 had a D35. The difference is that Rubicons have the 32 spline version of the D44. The non-Rubis have a 30 spline D44. What I did with my '08 2dr is I put on 4dr tow package springs with 1" spacers, which results in about 2.5" or lift. And then some adjustable lower front control arms to get the caster angle set back. All in the lift was only the price of the 1" spacers and the control arms, as I found the springs for free. Oh, and I used shock extensions from teraflex.
It's because of this channel, I am saving my money to get a jeep. I am thankful for you & your love for jeeps and adventure. Keep it up & once again thank you!
This vid, like all your other videos, are what has gotten my grandsons, sons in law and now my daughters and granddaughters ALL lovin' Jeeps and off roading. In two weeks, we ALL descend on Death Valley for a long weekend family off road trip. No overlanding for the girls yet but there's still hope. Thanks for sharing your experiences and inspiration for family time off road. 😉✌
To have your son's like-minded about adventure overlanding and trail exploring is a great opportunity to have be safe in the back country , luv your content of family. Thanks!!!!
I retired from Toyota after 26 years and have always have a Toyota truck, our Taco is the long distance driveer most days, but I like my Wrangler, it makes me happy because its fun !!!!!
I really hope to have this with my children as they grow up and realize the work I was putting in with them to explain the outdoors and different ways to enjoy them with a cool vehicle.
So, here's how we're seeing it...the boys are going to go places and film and report back to Brad & Regina who will be the news anchors, checking in on everyone. LOL!! Trailrecon Trail Reporters!!
this is mirroring me and my dad's off-road builds. I started with a 6 speed 2 door JK sport in 2018 and just got done putting a rubi transfer case in it. also did 35" tires, and those genright flares. It'll be cool to follow you and your son's adventures in the near future.
Growing up with Cj’s I have to say a stock 2-door will get you pretty much anywhere (within reason). And the Willys package is great. I’ve got a 4-door but if I ever decide to get another, it’ll be a 2-door.
Coming from a 2011 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon in Detonator Yellow to this NEW to you 2015 Willys congratulations Devyn! Our JKU has the black and yellow contrast too and I still love it.
When we had our JK Willys 2 Dr we put 33s take off from a JL Rubicon on the stock suspension and had no rubbing Love this and can’t wait to see it more often
I have been binge watching your videos for the past year and have to admit, there are several episodes that I have watched more than three times. You do an amazing job with your amazing family and friends. Keep up the excellent work.
I have the exact same jeep 2015 willys 2 door that just turned 25,000 miles today. I put a 2.5 inch lift with 2020 rubicon wheels and tires and it goes anywhere I want to go. Congrats on your new rig!!
I was in a similar situation. Got back from Korea and got a great deal on a 2006 Jeep wrangler TJU Rubicon. Transmission blew up after 3 months of ownership. Got it rebuilt then threw long arms and 35s and the Jeep hated it. I ruined that Jeep using it as a daily. So I bit the bullet and traded it in for a 2018 rubicon JL 2 door. I miss my 2006 LJ and I’ll own another one but this 2018 is just so amazing. 33’s, mopar Steele bumpers all the way around. Just threw a warm winch in it too. It’s crazy capable and I don’t need to worry about it leaving my stranded like my 2006 did on more than one occasion.
Nice. I put 255/85 on my 03 TJ Rubicon. I ordered custom coil springs from a company Kansas that were an inch and a half taller than stock and had them increase the weight rating for the new bumper and winch. It has crank windows and no electronic sway bar disconnect also. Have fun on the trails.
You talked about covering the rear speaker when building a floor, if you remover the floor cover the speaker is set lower, when you cover the whole floor area, there is plenty of air around the speaker to keep it cool, and the sound comes in fine, that's how mine is so I can say covering it is not a problem. Nice rig.
Congrats on your purchase! 2 yrs ago I was in a dealer looking at newJL's when someone brought in their '15 Rub 2dr to trade, it had 14k miles, looked brand new and still had mopar warrenty left! .Get rid of the subwoofer, if you have stuff in the back on the subwoofer it'll vibrate and sound terrible, it will also open up some storage space for tools, water bladder or maybe a compressor. Also don't be so quick to lose the rear bumper, it can be used as a water tank, it'll hold up to 7 gals. I wouldn't drink it except in an emergency, but great for dishs, cleaning fishing washing up etc. Really need to get creative space wise with a 2 dr!
That tag on the back is for a safety check. It's required yearly to get registration for the vehicle. Goes through basic safety items on the vehicle: turn lights, brakes, headlights.... 🤙
A small lift with some Falcon shocks (or similiar) that has longer droop in the same package or slightly longer would help with wheel travel. Going to a 33" sounds smart with that gear ratio. Without lockers he will be fine with a ton of things so long as he can flex out. Keeping the wheels on the ground is the first task.
@TrailRecon I'm looking forward to watching your content on your son's Jeep! So awesome that your love for being off-road got passed to your kids. Off-road people are the best people...😁
Go ahead and get enough lift to run 35's. You can run your 33's, but still have the breakover clearance. Go ahead and get 4.10 or a bit lower gears. Your dad, wants you to make your decisions, but he will not disagree with my thinking. 35's on a two door jeep is all you really need. I'm excited to follow your adventures!
Love the JEEP and what’s in stock. We’re in the 80’s here in HAWAII 😂😂 The sticker is when your inspection expires, yes not much driving in Hawaii. Infinite Offroad has great rock lights with lifetime warranty.
The limited slip deferential is very good and a big upgrade from a sport. Good video Brad and Devon great to see you guys out on the trail and making plans for the new Jeep.
Brad - that small sticker is for “recon” registration in Hawaii. They actually just passed a law that this will end in 2025 as reconstructed vehicles don’t show any data that lends to more accidents. I believe all 4 wheel suv need this recon registration along with safety. I had a JK and had to get it even when it was stock. I have been told that these rules change per inspection space. Great looking jeep. Hope you have a blast with your son fixing it up. That’s for continued entertaining content
Love it! Congrats on the new rig. The Willys trim is my favorite of the Wrangler/Gladiator platform because IMO they're the best mix of on-road convenience and off-road features. We loved our '09 2-Dr JK (just sold last year) and even though a base Sport model, we had 285/70R/17 Milestar Patagonia's with a small 2" lift and it was the perfect combo for daily driving. At ~32.7 x 11.2", it's just smaller than a 33" but doesn't require any modifications. So if upgrading the tires, I highly recommend going with that size on your Willys 2-dr. But regardless, I'm looking forward to the build and love seeing the whole family getting their rigs setup!
I have to say I’ve been watching your videos for a few months now since I have had my Jeep and I am ecstatic. I really hope there are many more videos of this jeep and your son. I am also a young guy around his age with my first jeep. But it’s funny that I also got a yellow 2 door 2015 with Low mileage for a similar price. Mine is the Sahara so fairly similar and I have the exact same vision as him. So I’m along for the ride with y’all.
Upgrade #1, hood latches! I overland in my 14 jkr hard rock with my wife. Plenty of storage space for what we carry you just gotta be smart about it. It's just a fantastic vehicle. I started stock with no real intentions of moving past the stock height, now I'm on a 2.5 rock krawler full suspension, 4.80 gears and 35s. Love these things. I'm stoked to see your sons following you around on the trail. Looking forward to the adventures.
Your sons are so handsome. I love that he wants to keep it close to stock. So many people, me included, just want to start tinkering straight out the box. Great starter jeep for sure.
I’ve heard you say it a few times now. The Dana 35 was only used in 2007 on 2 door Jk models and is pretty rare to see. I’ve personally never seen one. 2008 and up jk’s had a new generation dana 44 in the rear.
You're right. Probably 99.999% of all JKs came with a 44 rear. Annoyed me almost as much as the mechanic interviewed saying throw a steering stabilizer at death wobble lol
I love your sons new to him Jeep. I bought in May ‘21 a 2017 2dr Jk silver with about 35K miles on it. Originally it was for $25,500 but dealer brought the price down for me to $23,000 and I have manual windows and locks and I love it. I honesty do even miss power windows and locks lol. I upgraded to 33’s on my jeep and no lift yet, it will be a small lift lol. Well anyway Congrats to your son and best of luck and I cant wait to see what he does to his new baby.🎉
The best product to make those black fenders pop is Trim Serum. I've been using it for about 2 years and it holds its shine way better than anything I've ever come across.
I'm looking forward to watching this build. I have a JL Willys with very similar modest goals. It's great to see you and your boys enjoying this together.
Congrats on the 2 new additions to the channel. I love when my sons can join in on wrenching projects. I’ve just recently been having success with removing rust with a product called “Evapo-rust”. I’m not affiliated with the product but it’s works great so far. I picked it up at Harbor freight but Amazon also has it. I’ve soak some parts from my 95 Miata and was blown away by the results. Today I installed skids on my 3rd Gen Taco and noticed surface rust starting to pop up. One of the downfalls of living on the coast. I’m going to spray some of the product on my undercarriage and see if I get similar results to the items I soaked over night. Looking forward to the progress the boys make. Happy trails!
I like the fact that your son is resisting the trend of jacking the thing to the moon to run monster tires. Exactly what I'd do with it. Side note: I owned a YJ for a few years that had also been in Hawaii, and it had that sticker as well. Thanks to the comments here, I now know what it was for.
Wow didn't know there was 3 boys! That's awesome! Love that your kids are into similar hobbies so your family can continue making amazing memories. I love that he got a 2 dr & in yellow just like mom. Can't wait to see the progression of his little Wrangler & the adventures he is going to take it on! Great advise on pushing all the buttons when test driving to make sure everything works.
@@rubiconadventurewithscotty3258 : Reeves is 6'1". Brad is 6'2" & I think one of his sons is a bit taller than him. I doubt the other two sons are much shorter.
I just wanted to give you a heads up in case you didn’t know. There are two types of Vector bars. One with the hoop and one without it. The bar with the hoop uses the screw in the dash tray as an anchor point. When you remove the stock radio for an aftermarket one you lose that anchor point. As a result you have to use the Vector bar without the hoop which is what I did. I’m not totally in love with the single bar. There is a lot of vibration since there are only two attachment points. I finally came up with a solution by adding rubber stoppers between the bar and dash. I had a machine shop cut a groove in the top of the stopper that the bar rests in. Now my GoPro and Garmin don’t vibrate as much and are easier to see.
Oh my a Jeep from Hawaii! I'll bet the cooling system is in serious need. Don't forget to add to "Coolant Flush" to your list of tasks. It is a known Jeep weak point and I'll bet the heater circuit has been neglected in Hawaii so perhaps consider a royal garden hose flush of that circuit using the house's 60psi. Then follow your serious moustached mechanic and only use H2O from Distilled water and the Jeep specific coolant (Orange OAT for my 2018 JKUR). OAT is one product I actually buy at the dealer, it is quite specific.
Looks great, congrats on the new to you jeep. We have just moved to NV and looking for our first family jeep. Like a 4 door but have NO idea what to look at regarding the used market. Lucky to have an expert helping in your search. Cant wait to see the changes you make.
Congrats! Ive been shopping for a 2 door here in Pennsylvania and whew prices are much lower here! Good luck and have fun to the whole family I appreciate the content!
Love your Willys. I havea 2016 Bright White stock Willys Wrangler 2door came from Canada with 49k miles on it, so I have a bit of the rusty stuff too. I love it. Very nimble little jeep. Loads of stuff I wanna do when money permits. Would love a 2 inch lift and 33's. Only thing I did change out were my headlights to LED's and addeddooroff mirrors.
Like the yellow Willys wrangler. I personally think many people are so focused on heavy loaded up unlimited 4 doors, they are missing out on the basic goodness of the lighter shorter two doors. More light weight, more nimble, overall less costly. I hope they 2 door wrangler continues to stick around. A base sport is pretty darn good. All it really needs is a limited slip rear differential and your good to go almost anywhere.
I got a 2 door jk sport. I only recently got a 2.5" lift and 35" tires. You'll be amazed the places you'll go with just 33" tires and limited slip. Just to name some trails that my little jeep has conquered Fins and Things in Moab, John Bull trail in Big Bear, and Cleghorn in San Bernardino. I do highly recommend some rock sliders and armor for underneath. But I think Brad has forgotten or just doesn't realize how capable a stock jeep is
