I put it this way. They're manufacturing Laser Rifles without access to the same resources as the originals. It likely explains why they're bigger, function differently ie automatic doesn't have a rotating barrel for example and are slightly weaker. But think about it, who else is manufacturing new Laser Rifles? Van Grafs back west perhaps but they also rely on scrounge pre-war parts/components and still produce inferior rifles as well..
@@Alte.Kameraden they might not have a bunch of originals, but they do have a massive computer base full of prewar information. And they are capable of creating synthetic life that is apparently nearly impossible to distinguish from natural life. They have the technology to clone animals, and they have an actual teleporter. If they have all of that, I think they should be able to create a better lazer rifle.
@@Alte.Kameraden and I say this as a huge fan of the institute, I e played fallout 3, new Vegas, and 4, for a stupid amount of hours, and they are easily my favorite faction, and I think the most capable of making the world better, at least when the player character is in charge. But that's why mods exist, I can't imagine playing fallout 4 without at least 60 mods.

Built a Fusion Reactor that is 10th the the size of Mass Fusion's Reactor with no Radiation Leaks outside the small container. Well until Bethesda introduced Vault 88 and well BS Reactors. 😆
They don’t need it to be better, though. They just need to be easily mass-produced. And, in the crafting menu for it, the institutes rifle is cheaper than a laser rifle. The strength of the institute isn’t firepower, it’s being able to sicc endless waves of scrap metal synths with laser guns on top of your enemy until they’re gone, which the institute laser rifle is perfect for. Any mission requiring a special ops team they can just send a few coursers with stealth boys, or a surface operator like Kellogg to do it for them. The Experiment 18A plasma rifle shows the institute can produce legendary plasma weapons if they need to, but that goes against Institute military doctrine.
The worst gun is the cryolator, why have it seen at the beginning, everyone forgets its there and when you remember you have better weapons or your perks dont line up with it
There is a way to make the ghoulslayers gamma gun awesome. Side with jack Cabot, strip the mod off the gun he gives you, and slap it on the gamma gun. Then it truly lives up to its name
I still prefer a institute gun over plasma ones, I hate the slow moving projectiles. Fully auto Institute guns are actually pretty good with crazy rate of fire, very good with bleeding or explosive effect. And the blue lasers look neat. Use 3rd person. Even 1st person with reflex sight is not too bad at all on the screen.

I never understood why the Institute rifle did less damage than the normal laser rifle. Like why even make a newer, less good version of a gun that's already in the game?
Meant to be only used by the gen 1/2 synths? All it's issues don't matter if you apply "battle droid" tactics to it... Course, that falls apart when you remember that coursers also use it.
I put it this way. Who else is manufacturing brand new laser weapons? From the ground up its something no other faction in any of the games are doing. Even the Van Grafs in NV are just selling refurbished laser weapons mostly. BOS does not manufacture their own laser rifles and rely on savage to find parts or whole rifles. People just look at it wrong. Institute has built their own Laser Rifle operating under different principles ie no rotating barrel on the automatic for example. Using likely inferior materials because of resource bottle necks, hence being larger and weaker. But they are making them unlike other Factions. It's like Developing Teleportation and Food Replication, sure done before but the Institute has done it themselves. They're not the Think Tank with a massive self reliant complex who had an entire government fueling their creations... we're talking about college teachers who a few Generations later got to a point were they're almost and at times surpassed the old world technically. Imagine them one or two more generations down the road? As I said, people look at it wrong.

I don’t use the institute rifle regularly, but I’ve never had a problem with it taking up so much real estate on screen. I’ve played it on a 20” screen all the way up to a 65” screen.
One upside it has is that it’s ammo is common during the main quest line. The only time I used it is when I ran out of ammo and there were a thousand synths to take care of

Well of course you cant use it well, it was made to be used by institute synths. Targeting subroutines would solve the massive obstruction of vision. So its a perfect weapon to give to your companions.
the assault rifle is absolutely garbage too since its the ugliest gun I have ever seen in a video game (yes the cursed cod vanguard guns look better than this) because it looks like a God damn airship, it also takes up literally a third of your screen,stats are hot garbage,and literally everything about is hot garbage an there's nothing redeemable about it😭
Odd. As an automatic its RoF is enough to make it very effective, for a low-tier, early game jobbie. Wind up the damage/wind down the recoil stats and add a scope. Even with a suppressor it has 200+ range, which is more than enough. I prefer the combat rifle as an AR, and the AR as a sniper, but then I'm a child of the 50s and a fan of Accuracy International.
Now the legendary healing effect is only useful if you have companions to shoot at. In theory, you can equip a weapon that has the ability to use a silencer that also has the healing effect, and while your companion is in combat, you can sneak shoot your companion from a distance and become a healer. Other than that, shooting weaker enemies that are in combat with a different faction will help sustain the fight longer allowing you to witness stronger enemies dying and then switch your weapon to kill off remaining enemies. All of this can be done with high stealth ability.
Funnily enough they reworked the medic legendary effect for Fo76 but never thought to patch that into 4 at any point. The idea of vats crits healing you + your companion seems like a decent effect.
I only collect institute rifles/pistols because they make for cheap and effective defensives for my settlements and doing the danse glitch gives me more than enough ammo to spare to them
@@nivenreed5118 it might've been fixed with this recent "patch", but during the mission with danse when you follow him into the power plant to the basement with the rocket, duck into the safe area and let him fight off as many synths as you want, don't cook the synths (and danse) until like half an hour later. if you do it right you get like 2,000 fusion cells and 50 pistols/rifles to sell/dissasemble/use
I actually found a mod that straight up shrinks the Institute Rifle to the size of the regular laser gun. I haven't checked if the mod is on Playstation, but it is available on xbox.
maybe try the focused institute rifle. it has a better scope and you can get it when you go for your first quest with paladin danse if you wait long enough for him to slay the synths.
The problem with a lot of guns in fallout 4 is the scale disparity between wearing the power armor or not. To make the pistol make sense in the power armor it has to be huge when in reality the power armor should have been limited to a 12.7mm pistol that a regular human couldn't weld and a 10mm should have been for regular people that power armor couldn't use because their finger wouldn't fit. There are no institute power armor suits so the rifle should have been much smaller and not usable by power armor but as I said they had to make it usable for both humans and power armor so it's 3x bigger than it should be
You'd think after 200 years those scientists in the institute would be able to make a gun that isn't absolutely awful. But nope, we get a plastic box that isn't even as good as a regular Laser rifle.
It's only slightly weaker than a regular laser rifle, that's the only bad thing, I got a legendary one with bleeding damage, combine it with scatter laser and rapid fire and it just bleeds enemies to death in seconds. The worst weapon is any pipe weapon, followed by healing mininukes, but legendary healing effect itself can be useful for healing companions
The best part is that Bethesda completely bricked *all* of the energy weapons in FO4 because they forgot to add modifiers to the energy weapons damage calculations. Any upgrades for energy weapons that increase base damage are ignored so all of those mats you spent on upgrading the damage of your fancy new energy weapon were pointless. It's why energy weapons completely fall off in the late game. Bethesda had known about this bug for over 10 years but didn't bother patching it in their "next gen" update but rather focused on widescreen support that's completely busted.
I say it has a good design lorewise. A synth does not need to aim down sights. Making it cumbersome for humans is a good strategy for keeping the rifle out of wastelander hands.
I agree I literally cant use that gun at all because it tales up more screen space than a behemoth at 2 meters Also i hate the fact it's just mediocre Like sure it's not bad but I'd rather jsut use the base laser rifle or maybe even the legendary kaser rifle danse gives you in the Cambridge police station Hell i dont even like laser weapons all that much due to the fact they often deal bad damage
Even better: the laser rifle in one of the loading screens? If you mimic the modifications on it, you’ll get a full auto laser shotgun with recoil so intense you’ll miss all your shots after the first that does piss poor damage on top of that
Honestly? It works as a "battle droid" type weapon: Overly large so as to discourage human use, seemingly made with quantity well over quality, and it gets the job done in numbers. The problem is it isn't just the gen 1/2 synths using it. Even the coursers, who're treated lore-wise as terminators, use the stupid thing (Despite the fact 3 pretty much states they used plasma rifles, but who cares about consistency?).
My biggest gripe is that the institute are so advanced and have personally developed these weapons, how are they so bulky? Its dumb. "Oh, they mads them from scratch" good! Pull in some old laser rifle from the wastes and use that as a base for newer models!
I would rather use any gun instead of the laser musket. I don’t know why because they aren’t the weakest gun, but I used it once and said nope. I never even picked one up again.
Exactly lol I was looking for a mod that would shrink it down by at least 20% but it would be better if it was more sleek and compact since it is the institute lol they should’ve made that weapon a step up or the same as the regular laser rifles lol
