Everybody's trying to protect Oblak and I appreciate that, but the fact that Atleti *still* faced the least amount of shot and expected goals in the league and they are leaking goals like this is shocking. The data pointed at him as the biggest issue. Ouch. I don't envy his situation.

I ,for one, don't blame Oblak one bit. I've been watching every atletico game and without having Josema Gimenez and Savic, you just couldn't depend on Mario Hermoso and Felipe. We lost Marcos Llorente for most of the season since he was a brilliant box to box who gave a little bit more solidarity to our back line while being an incredible attacker. Oblak just doesn't have the best defense in Europe in front of him anymore and that's just it. Atletico need to bolster their back line and work on their defensive organization.

They kinda have the same problem Mourinho has in todays football. Take that Inter squad from 2010 and let them play in todays champions league with Mourinho as their coach. They would still be very successfull. Yes the game has changed, but more important is the change of society (Internet, social media) and how football players have changed. Back then Etoo played at inter even though he had all the talent with the ball and he was still willing to fight every match. Nowadays we look at players like Felix and we think: what the hell is he doing at Atleti? He should play for pep at City. Players dont want to play a "park the bus" strategy anymore. Nowadays everybody has to play "offensive, attractive football"

As an Atleti fan, it hurts so much. But maybe this drop in form is a lesson to be learnt for the future.

Generational change at defence. During the 2010s, we had relatively few changes at the back four barring injury or rotation (Juanfran, Miranda/Gimenez, Godin/Savic, Filipe Luis). Furthermore, the ethos of the team football was building off of being defensively solid AND then hitting on counters or having the fullbacks pitch in a lot in attack via crosses or dangerous runs. Also the centre backs would score a fair bit off of set plays. Now, the emphasis is supposedly on a stronger attack, WITHOUT having found suitable replacements (even if they were not always internationally recognized, the back line for Atleti were among the best in the world, at least in excellent shape and played international football as well besides Juanfran maybe. Essentially big shoes to fill which was never completely addressed on a long term basis besides Gimenez. The board has stuck to budget options when you compare it to the investment in attack. The defenders we have atm are good but are sometimes especially exposed in champions league facing tougher attackers, they especially suffer during one on ones or in counters as they are not the fastest bunch. A similar argument can be made to our midfield, finding players in search of more game time/switch to a different league or players who didn’t work out in a certain place and are looking to prove themselves. Old stars have started underperforming such as Saul (who was playing terribly for several years no where near how impactful he was before even receiving Spain call ups) and now Koke while other academy midfielders like Partey have left. Simeone loves to be faithful to certain players and will stick by them which can work but sometimes the player will not improve instantly ofc so how do you deal with that especially when they’re a locker room fave or a long time academy captain like koke? Truthfully, kondogbia/llorente/de Paul should start in central roles together instead of koke rn. Saul and Partey when they were in form were incredible and they’re missed. Kondogbia/llorente/de Paul flash amazingly but need to play together regularly to develop chemistry and above all need time and faith. In attack, Suarez, Llorente and Correa scored most of our goals. This year Suarez has struggled in front of goal and been injured, he can no longer run in behind of a defence. Llorente has been forced to play further back even at right back sometimes so he hasn’t been allowed to be in front of goal a lot as well as being injured. Correa’s case is a mystery. Literally won us La Liga last year and while he’s always had strokes of genius his main issue was being consistent. Since last year he has developed a consistent appetite for goal while being more involved in assisting too. He started the year brilliantly too scoring in most of our games. How do you bench an in form striker/forward? Again Simeone has unwavering faith in certain players and Griezmann is one of them. While he was played well in champions league games he hasn’t been consistent in la liga and like many others has been injured a lot. Cunha is looking very good in the opportunities given to him as a sub but is now also injured. Medical staff, que hubo pues? Covid, injuries, rotations, and simeone’s peculiar beliefs (randomly not believing in Lodi anymore, faith in Koke, benching Correa, Felix starter or not?) have not allowed for continuity or for simeones successful transition to a three at the back last year which made us deadly in la liga last year, more attacking and scoring early in the games with carrasco and llorente on the wings, resurgent lemar in the middle etc. we only show up in the second half of games now leading to so many come back games or almost comebacks. Sticking to a 1-0 approach is a gamble and while it pays off sometimes it’s reliant on a solid defence and an attack that’s clinical/efficient with the few chances we get. Simeone showed he’s willing to change last year which makes this even more frustrating but amid injuries and uncertainty he’s reverted back to 1-0 nature but if they score on you early in the game… then you gotta improvise lol. We have talented players but things aren’t clicking and that’s fine, these things happen. But to go from la liga champions to this in so little time is concerning. I don’t want Atleti to turn into late 2010s arsenal where the ownership and board are content with just making champions, earning good money and not actually improving or competing. That is why with the threat of missing champions league (which we haven’t done since God knows when), it might move people’s asses in the dressing room, staff and board. Are we a big established international team with good marketing and blah blah blah or are we el equipo del pueblo (the team of the village), developing (not necessarily discovering) the world’s most exciting talents from a renowned academy (Agüero, De Gea, Torres, Costa, Falcao, Griezmann, Oblak, Godin, Koke, Saul, Partey, etc)? This this video hits me deep because it is definitely an identity crisis unfolding with talks now of a discontent locker room (obviously no one likes losing). We clearly have talented and devoted players who not long ago performed amazing on a domestic level albeit. We need to re evaluate what the principles of this team are, show faith in players that are IN FORM, be smarter like we used to in transfer windows and not neglect the defence, maybe have another look at the medical staff (?), focus on the academy or young talents from Latin America (Lodi, Gimenez, Correa at the time of signing) and not get sucked into a world of complacency because even if we qualify for champions league or have a decent run of games, this is a sign of deep underlying issues that need addressing and not hiding!

Atlético’s entire back line is a disaster without Savic and josema. Felipe and hermoso are actually disastrous. The stupid fouls they both make that are unnecessary have cost atlético so many matches. They also don’t have a real right back. Llórente is not a right back and it is holding him back from contributing like he was last season. Selling trippier and not getting a GOOD replacement was just completely stupid. I don’t know how they can fix it but I hope they do something quick cuz at this rate I’m not going to watch atlético playing In the Europa

We know oblak is amazing so I can be patient for all that he's done for us Our personnel on the pitch is nowhere near the quality of the 2010s Era Some of our bench players from back then are starters now and our purchases have been more focused on branding rather than players who fit a simeone style We've needed a whole revamp in our back 4 and a striker who can play that sorta game It's been a decline for years but now simeone can't but a bandaid on the wound

Players are done with simeone just like Chelsea in 2016, they want him out the club for some reason, the squad has changed drastically in the last few years and alot of players don't like his playstyle anymore

Oblak's situation is not much different from David De Gea a few years ago and Manuel Neuer as well. He is 29 rn and he will bounce back, I am certain, but if no reliable Center backs are brought in, then that would be a problem.

I think the issue of them (haven't watch the video) is they only have 1 midfielder who can be a DM with a defensive mind (Kondogbia) and Oblak below-his-average game is not helping the team at all.

Something could be going on in Oblak's personal life, which affected his concentration on the field, being a keeper is very hard on any level, psychological pressure is just incredible, wish him to get back to his best asap.

What's happening with Oblak reminds me of what happens to goalies in Hockey when they are used way too much, especially when they have a terrible defense. These goalies become terrible due to getting burnt out after being left to die behind terrible defenses. Atletico's backline is burning out Oblak.

I wonder how is Jan Oblak's life at home, I seem to recall both David De Gea and Thibaut Courtois having horrendous time when there was trouble on with girlfriends or wives. I know some players struggle when they have newborn kids but he appears to be single with no kids. I would argue that Diego Godin leaving Athletico and not being replaced is finally coming home to roost too, he was the one putting players in right position and marshaling that defense,

Oblak needs a fixed defense in front of him. Plus he needs to up his game and improve some of his abilities.

Honestly playing Savic and hermoso at cb over gimenez might work. They are all class but currently hermoso is just better at cb than lb, isn’t injury prone (like gimenez) and Savin is just so underrated in my opinion. We should play Lodi at lb more and need to play Daniel was more often. He was brilliant vs Barca and if he played from the start it might have been 3-2 or even only 2-2. The ideal midfield in my opinion is koke with kondogbia and Carrasco in the lm position and llorente in the rm position and in the attack suarez and Felix with greizmann on subs just because Felix is on fire currently. (Oh and oblak in goal). What do you guys think?

the players themselves have to blame themselves Giminez has been poor to say the least in some games, which is usually unexpected for a player in his level

Oblaks crazy performances were just covering up the defensive issues. This could be said about all iconic goalkeepers. At some point you can’t avoid letting goals in. I would look at how many of those goals were actually oblaks fault. I don’t recall many, so they are just really hard shots to stop and the defense is also not as solid.

Jeremy said the same thing I have been saying. The defense started cracking last season. We didn't reinforce during the summer. Covid + form + injuries + short squad + confidence have turned this season into a nightmare. We need reinforcements in the backline and the squad may look very different next year manager included. He is the whole reason the team is failing. He is the all be all of the club. He had the power to demand signing that are best for him, but instead he brought in Griezmann. And he did the same with Feipe Luiz and Diego Costa.

Not only defense, we are struggling at attack too. I'm shocked that Suarez is still starting despite never success in returning passes. He is the weakest link. All attacking attempts stopped at him and got stolen just because he couldn't pass accurately. All his goals are tap ins which Correa also can do that. I would rather start Giuliano Simeone which could possibly gives something more. Felix which is in fact, always a game changer and a prodigy, is behind Suarez on the pecking order. Simeone is blinded. 5-3-2 always ended up in conceding more goals. We need to take over the midfield. Just use false nine (Correa, Griezmann, Cunha) , Felix must always start as playmaker. Use one defensive mid (Kondogbia, Hererra). Start Llorente as right back. And definitely bench Suarez

Yeah sad season for Atletico, what about their young defender like manu Sanchez, N. Perez, and their academy. I like both of those defenders why aren't they at Atletico. Give young player a chance and the defenders that they need.
