I have had hiluxs for around 25 years. Easy to work on, and get parts for. I started cheap, 5k was my first hilux. I had it for 7 years, until I sunk it in port Philip bay launching my boat on a beach, I got paid out 7k from the insurance company as a total loss - bonus! (Made 2k in 7 years). I tend not to do hard core stuff anymore, 1- I’m older and wiser, 2, my current sr5 hilux cost $67k fully decked out, bull bar, winch, steel tray, 145 litre long range tank, and many other bits and pieces, reg + insurance. This vehicle now tows my caravan to WA, where I prospect for gold, it’s my business vehicle, tows my boat, use it’s tray to fill up fire wood. It’s all rounder now. I take care of my vehicles nowadays. When I was young I blew up gearboxes, transfer cases, cracked rear axles, cooked engines, replaced head gaskets myself. I fully pulled apart my 3RZ 2.7 litre engine and rebuilt that myself in my home garage. Took that all the way to WA, then north to Broome, Halls creek, down towards Melbourne down the tanami (worst dirt road on earth, vicious corrugations in parts, I think around 1100 or 1300kms, can’t remember), it didn’t miss a beat that old girl on that trip. My advice, buy something cheap, if you are blessed being mechanically minded, and can fix things yourself, go for it, have fun. Not everyone is mechanically minded, so think wisely before you go hard on tracks, cos things brake when they get old (cheap cars), and if you are paying someone to fix it, I can imagine things escalating in costs. But I’d say give it a go, try to fix things yourself, there’s plenty of knowledge on RU-vid nowadays to help you along

I know most people would know this. But, if you want a 3L GU. DO NOT get an early series one. GU I, GU II, If you wanna save money. If you don’t mind spending money and sending your car to the mechanic shop or spending 4 weekends on it then go right ahead. There is a reason they’re called grenade engines. Later Direct Injection 3L (GU III, GU IV) didn’t have the grenading problem but you’ll have to replace the diesel pump and injectors at one point. I just replaced the pump and injectors on mine. If you want a Patrol just save up your money and get a TD42 turbo or non. Just stay clear of the early ZD30 3L engines unless you’re gonna engine swap it. This is my current plan and one of many reasons why I got a ZD30. Even though my patrol is a GU IV and the issue was resolved the ZD30 engine is somewhat underpowered and sluggish. It’s not built for power.

I bought 2008 Range Rover with all the Vogue etc names with every option, it’s a tuned 3.6 d V8, egr, PDF delete (quicker than my mate’s 4.5 Toyota), never towed anything, inside like new and not even a scratch on the paint, an obvious mall crawler or soccer mum car just it makes good noise: bought it to tow a boat but it drives so smooth and quiet, not even a rattle that I drive 98% of the time (also have a mint C6 Corvette convertible I’m not even bothering to register next year) Paid $25k for it with 110,000 klm, now has 155,000 klm with no issues: have taken it on some rough old dirt tracks but nothing that needed 4x4 engaged so can’t comment on that, I’ve heard people bag them because sometimes an airbag might stuff up but that’s it: I wanted a V8 Toyota, either troopy or wagon but they were twice the price with more than twice the klm’s, had just basic plastic interior, no autos (I’m an old truckie so not interested in manuals: I can drive a 20 speed quadruplex and 20 speed Spicer which most have never even heard of let alone Road Rangers etc) I like English cars and this thing is like a 4x4 Roller, if it costs me $20k (which it won’t) over the next ten years I’ll still have money left over if I bought a Troopy... maybe not the resale but I doubt there’ll be much in it. Was going to look at a new Jeep before I bought the C6 but the only diesel is a 2.2 Alpha Stelvio and can’t find a long term review: the previous 2.8 was a VM engine, I used them on BPT’s as blower engines and nothing trouble... the new Colorado has them just they changed a few things, in Jeeps they cringed, in the Colorado they rave about them, go figure... I wouldn’t trust one.

Disco and defenders cant go wrong. Under rated in aus due to a smaller aftermarket and dificult to get parts. But very capable vehicles being coil live axles (disco 1 and 2) and not too expensive. And the defenders (excluding perentie) are alloy bodies so light. Verymuch under rated cars. And for thr 0-5k bracket a v8 disco is a better choice then a petrol gq. Both good tho. Diesel offerings in the gq are much better than disco offerings and on par with defenders esp perentie

Get a clean gu patrol and engine swap it with a 1hdfte or LS engine depending on what driving you do and itll be blow all other 4x4 on the tracks and on the streets. You can't simply buy a 4x4 with a better driveline or chassis. Nissan engines aren't the best but the Toyota engines are so itll be a no brainier to spend 60 to 80k on a brand new car littered with emissions controls and engineered to only last a curtain time. service ability and parts availability is another key factor that needs to be brought up. I myself have done extensive research and work to my car which is a GU patrol with a td42t. Youll be amazed at how reliable you can get these engines if you have some good mechanical knowledge. The thing that lets them down is the Muppet that pulls a 30k loan out to buy one. The 79, hilux and any other ute 4x4s (excluding the patrols ) are not made to go do your hard tracks without a high amount of stress put on factory components. And ill happily have a extensive discussion with anyone who disagrees with this.

Whatever price you get your 4wd. Its second hand. Hence itll need work. People have families. People fix things when they break and perhaps not much so preventative. Another tip perhaps go with live axle front and rear. Independent has more clearennce but just doesnt flex. I think theyre best left for outback touring. If you dont mind the lack of movement in the front end or do light 4wd work there are more 4wds out there besides nissans and toyotas. For young guys why not a swb mq patrol? 80/90's pajero-i think the petrol versions had a v6? Land rover discoveries v8 for local work, diesel for touring-plenty mods out there from uk to get them up and going. If you want a land rover 110. Get onto greys online. Register and bid for a perentie. It should be cheaper than buying one from gumtree/ebay.

My mechanic said he would beat me up if I bought a pathfiner (same shape as a D40 navara - previous models were great) as they had so many issues with the 2.5lt diesel. Theres a reason theyre such a good price but also why so many have dissapeared from the second hand market so fast when they were a top selling ute. Did heaps of research for us on the subject. Reliability between the mitsubishi and the pathfinder....stick with Pajero or challenger. Both great cars and reliable and good bang for buck. The 3.2lt pajero diesels are amazing on fuel and tow amazingly if you can get one. Just stay away from a pathy for your wallets sake. (Fyi my firt car was a pathy so I have a soft spot for them and was gutted the new ones were so unreliable). Good luck

About to buy my next car. I'm at a loss at what to get. I want something with the reliability of my old 80s hilux but with more comfort. I don't want it financially ruin me if it breaks down. I just don't see that in all the new work utes, as much as I like the look of them. I have 30-40k to spend. I'm actually considering getting a 4.7 v8 petrol cruiser for 20-30k and spending 10k on mods (or fuel).

Totally forgot about Jeeps or Defenders. JL Wrangler Rubicon twin locked solid axles still sold brand new. 2012 Defender 110. JK wrangler unlimited petrol is under 30k swell these days so similar budget to same age dual cabs. Having something the insurance companies value what it cost is important to me. over paying on a 80 series or td patrol means having to pick a car enthusiast type insurance which you pay more for again. 5000km service intervals on mechanical diesels isn't practical for most tradies, modern diesels go 10,000km same as petrols.

Most 4.2 diesel six pots burn nearly just as much fuel as their petrol counterparts except for the mighty Patrol 4.8, that wins the drinking contest hands down. Also diesels require a service more frequent than petrol's. I drive a Landcruiser but if I had to choose something for a bush weapon I would go with a TJ Wrangler and I am not a Jeep fan at all.

Hi Boys, Great content. I’ve watched this twice and got two different answers. In Sydney at least early 4x4s are like puppy dogs. They are scarce and expensive. I saw more wanted adds, than vehicles.it wasn’t like this 12 months ago. I’m now thinks a clean late model bt50, dmax etc is better value than an early project, but get a good early 4z4 and it will appreciate in value Regards Alex
