A creature performer is an actor who moves like a monster or an animal using CGI or practical effects. Buck the dog in “Call of the Wild” and the apes in the “Planet of the Apes” trilogy featured motion capture performers standing-in for digital characters. Other times, like the amphibian man in “The Shape of Water” or Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s portrayal of L3-37 in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” practical characters were used on set and modified in post production. The process can vary depending on production needs, and can also be seen in Disney’s live-action “Dumbo” and “Beauty and the Beast” remakes, and “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.”

This is why I couldn't be an actor. I'd find it harder to pretend a man in a grey morphe suit on weird stilts was my dog than imagining one in front of me. I don't think i could stop myself from having a giggle

The CGI animation is visually amazing and it's overall impressive about how a man in a green screen suit captures the movement that transfers into a cinematic experience in our visions. Too bad their talent already wasted away because Disney keep milking on live-action remakes based on animated movies.

Well before this technology existed, animals were trained. This has only really been used in films for animals over the last decade.

Andy Serkis also interpreted King Kong in the 2005 movie and Gollum in the LOTR triology, both working for Peter Jackson. I don't know how the academy havent give him an Oscar, Serkis trully deserves it.

When I was 8-10 years old I would do this exact type thing-but running like a horse with solid blocks of legos for front hooves. I studied horse gaits, footwork, and even head positions. I ran, jumped obstacles, and even had my 4 year old little sister ride on my back like a real horse and hadndler. I often put a necklace through my mouth and behind my head to mimic a bit and reins. I formed thick callouses on my palms from running like this every day for years, and worked up some seriuous speed for a 10 year old on all fours. I was the real deal for sure.

Man, I love every creature Javier Botet plays. There’s a quality to his physical acting in horror that’s really unnerving. Also, fave mocap creature? Obviously Gollum. No doubt about that. No other CGI creature ever made me so sympathetic and caring, to the point that Gollum is honestly one of my favorite characters in LOTR, and not only because of how he’s characterized. He is genuinely very well acted. Also omg the gills on the water man were operated remotely?? That’s fantastic. See, practical effects will always have way more charm than CGI (I don’t consider mocap to be CGI by the way).

You can't go past the first use that i was aware of for these suits which was the lord of the rings trilogy. It was utterly insane at the time that the character that is allows after the ring " the presuice" , was his name golam ? Was not fully CIG but an actor . I remember that being an amazing thing at the time

Two of my favorite movies with creature performers are Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and WARCRAFT. In both films, the nonhuman characters were portrayed through motion capture by their respective actors or actresses.

Thought Netflix's Okja was alright for how they handled the creature/acting. I have yet to see the newer Planet of the Ape films, ought to get on that.
