THIS IS A HUNTING VIDEO. VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED.
What a Combination, to be able to talk guns while hunting. I head out after Fallow Deer but end up talking about my BRNO Combination gun that I have been working on.
Combination Gun is a BRNO model 502 12g/.243 with a Kahles Helia 5 1-5x mounted on top.

Nice video. When I started with hunting, I was using a "grandfather" of Brno Combo - a ZH gun. Now it has been years since I switched to a bolt action, but I am again considering a combo weapon, just for the walks with dogs in my hunting area. Greetings from Czech republic, city of Brno ;-)

Had one while I was living in Europe, although I rarely ever used the combo barrel, over under was on there and was all I needed when checking the feeders or pest hunting. Also liked using it at the clay pigeon range. However, when duck hunting, my Browning A500 was my favourite. Just one of those things. All in all the Czech combo is awesome and sturdy, my only complaint was that it wasn't 5.56, much cheaper rounds and will be ample for deer, pigs and even foxes. Just a $ based whinge, nothing to do with performance. Thanks for jolting my memory, you will find that the rifle you have there will literally be handed down for many generations to come.

Thanks for your input mate. Always great to hear of other Hunters first hand experience. I was originally after a .222/12g combo but this one was the best I had found. I just load the 243 down to 22mag velocities using 55gr projectiles when the need arises. Very versatile rig, especially with the Kahles 1-5 mounted on top. Thanks for watching👍👍

Consider getting the perfect hand position then mark the top of the handgrip above your hand, drill a hole and install a little knob or something for a handstop so your hand stops going forward at the perfect spot every time.

Hi Steve interested to hear a bit more about the logic behind downloading the 55 grain Blitzking? Is that intended as a fox load? The 55 gr Blitzking in 243 and 223 are two of my favourite bullets and I've used them for years, but only ever driven at WARP speed. We can use them for deer here of course whereas you guys can't... the 55gr in 223 at 3200fps is lethal on fallow.
@BoltActionProductions
@BoltActionProductions 5 лет назад
G'day Dave. Great to hear from you. Logic? There's probably none behind what I am about to try. The combination guns prime role will be on foxes to the whistle so I really don't need the full power of the .243 and was originally after a .222/.223 12g combo. This one come up and I couldn't knock it back so I thought I might just try and see how it shoots the light pills. Always wanted to try it but never had a reason. I have a big tub of Trailboss powder so I am going to experiment. So in short there is no real reasoning behind what I am doing. I just want to experiment.
@BoltActionProductions
@BoltActionProductions 2 года назад
@@Angler233 yes mate. I run the 55’s with Trailboss powder for a reduced load when whistling foxes. With the gun sighted for the 80gr Corelokts at 1.5” high at 100yds the reduced load 55’s hit dead on for height and half an inch to the right. These reduced loads have only really been tested on foxes out to around 150yds. With good shot placement they have worked well 👍👍

Good question. It’s near enough to be spot on with the spread of the shotgun once you are beyond 10-15 mtrs. If things get a bit closer I tend to put the red dot a fraction high on my target👍

Nice rifle steve, Looks like a versatile fox, wild dog or pig gun where you may encounter close or longer shots. Are there any rules in Australia or Vic for (or against) use of shotguns on public land or on deer on private land? In NZ I've used buck shot on pigs and goats very effectively and it's been used before in wild animal recovery or pest control operations of red deer, tahr, goats etx from choppers. Thanks for sharing
@BoltActionProductions
@BoltActionProductions 5 лет назад
Cheers Jamie. That is a good question and one I had to check myself while we were away. In Victoria the legal minimum for Fallow using the .243 is a 80gr projectile. The shotgun can be used on deer with a solid slug with a minimum weight which I can't remember off the top of my head. I think it is around the 200-250gr. I believe the shotgun must have sights of some form or something similar. I haven't looked into it in depth as I don't intend to use the shotgun on deer myself but it is an option if you meet the criteria.

Good morning Steve,..and I mean that from looking at this video,..it was a beautiful morning. This combination rifle of yours, I'd like to hear your thoughts on these generally. I almost bought one, but stopped, because I realized I didn't have enough information/knowledge on them. Baikal seemed to be a fair make, but here in Canada, these have been stopped from importing because of present political conditions. Having mentioned this, do you think Baikal is a good rifle/shotgun maker?
@BoltActionProductions
@BoltActionProductions 5 лет назад
Cheers Reg. Combination guns? In all honesty they can be a bit hit and miss with limited options. Availability and variety of caliber choices is also an issue. Baikal? Well we have the same issue with the importing ban in Australia. Baikal are OK and I know a few people with there single shot rifles that have had good results. The BRNO 502 series are well built and as per most of them they are a little on the functional/agricultural side of things. I would definitely put the BRNO above the Baikal in build quality. I am yet to test this BRNO out in depth but I was very surprised by the accuracy of the 80gr Corelokt ammo. When zeroing it at 200yds the first two shots were an inch apart. After adjusting for point of impact I fired another two which were 3/4" apart. This blew me away. Time will tell on how it performs in the field. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for stopping by mate

Hi Steve, What mount did you find for the rifle? I have just bout a Tikka 512s in 222/12G for calling foxes. I am struggling to find a mount that can work. How is the old girl going 4 years on?
@BoltActionProductions
@BoltActionProductions Год назад
Depending on where you live you will most likely find it near impossible to walk into your local gunshop and buy a mount for that Tikka. Your best chance is where I ordered mine www.optics-trade.eu/en/. Just make sure you double check the mount size, style and compatibility before you order. Mine has had very little use of late but it’s always ready to go👍. Good luck with your quest

@BoltActionProductions
@BoltActionProductions 5 лет назад
I was originally looking for a 12g/222 or 223 for foxes but when this one come up it was hard to knock back. As the prime target will be foxes I don't really have the need for heavier pills. In saying this it shoots those 80gr Corelokts extremely well. So depending on point of impact variation between loads I might just keep a box of two of those Corelokts on hand for the bigger targets

@BoltActionProductions
@BoltActionProductions 5 лет назад
Thanks mate. If you look hard enough there are books out there on hunting particular deer species and for Sambar it is hard to go past "Walking them Up" by Ken Pearce. Ken's book is a must have for any new Sambar hunter and was mine when I bought it many years ago. It might be a little harder to find at the moment but if you look hard enough I am sure you will track down a copy. Other than that there is a wealth of knowledge on the internet via Facebook, RU-vid and so on. Just filter through the BS and you will work out the trends in opinions. The key is not to worry about previous experience but to put the little things you do know about hunting into practice while out chasing deer. It really isn't rocket science and it is very easy to find reasons why not to go but just ask yourself what is really stopping you. Just give it a crack and build your knowledge and experience as you go. The best way is to accept that you won't see deer and just enjoy the bush. Before you know it I can guarantee the hairs on the back of your neck will stand up when you get honked for the first time. Good luck mate and thanks again for dropping by.
