Just a note about Billy Powell. He was a roadie for the band who one day mentioned he played some piano. The rest is history.

I'm from Jacksonville, and my oldest cousin went to school with Gary Rossington (guitarist)and she used to babysit me in the early '70s, sometimes we would go to Gary's mom's house to see if she needed anything,a couple of times Gary was there, most of the time he was on the road

Simpler times, yes, and in so many ways they were much better times than today.

They did a concert in my hometown of Cleveland, MS in 1974. They had so much fun they ended up staying and partying for like a week. The scene from Almost Famous where the rock singer is partying on the roof happened that week. Alan Collins got on the roof and wouldn’t come down. Incredibly talented but check out Alan Collins life after the plane crash. His was the most tragic story of all and he didn’t die in the place crash. He might as well have passed away in the swamp that day because he never got over it.

It was awesome. I was there. Yes, under $20 tix, no cameras, cell phones, sunscreen, just fun and sun. They had the crash about a month after this show. That it hard! The birds were set free.

So many girls there for Peter Frampton for that Festival. He was the head liner but they stole the show!!! In my opinion

Greetings Gray Wolf, I dig your reaction to this iconic video. Ronnie Van Zant (vocals) Gary Rossington (slide guitar) Allen Collins (guitar/dressed in white) Steve Gaines (guitar) Leon Wilkeson (bass) Billy Powell (piano) Artimus Pyle (drums) That was at an annual event called Day on the Green. The other bands performing that day were Peter Frampton, Santana and Outlaws.

If you think their albums were great, they were even better live. The orginals were perfection and it was their music. Fly high Freebird!

Yeah, that's how we did summer concerts in the 70's. Fill a sports stadium with people and bring on the bands. All started in 69 in a farm field in Woodstock. Three guitars; The Guitar Army. All those young girls are grandmas or great grandmas now. The only member from this line up still living is the drummer Artimus Pyle. That guitar solo is still going in the here after.

I seen them 3 times before the plane crash and April 2024 I seen the modern Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top. Ronnie’s brother sings lead now and have been the last 36 years.

Great Reaction!! Check out 1976 performance at Knebworth opening for the Stones. 250,000 plus crowd. Ronnie led guitarists out onto the "tongue" part of the stage which had been forbidden by Mick. Solo is longer, crowd is electric.

Yes, 5 studio albums and 1 live album prior to the plane crash. Legendary band for sure. Allen Collins shredding the last half of the song, Gary Rossington playing the slide guitar, Steve Gaines on guitar, Leon Wilkeson on bass, Billy Powell on the piano, Artimus Pyle on drums and Ronnie Van Zant lead vocals. We got robbed. Thanks for the reaction.

They had a house out in the middle of nowhere, where they would write and sing songs. Most of the time they were tripping on mushrooms when they did.

Billy Powell's Bud can may be one of the old steel ones, with the seam down the side. Also, wouldn't you count the bass guitar in with the other three?! Gotta give Leon Wilkeson some recognition for his artistry! I think I've heard there were 50,000 to 63,000 folks in attendance at that particular Day on the Green -- with a line-up like they had, and for cheap tix, those numbers are entirely possible. ENERGY IS RIGHT!!!

So the Promoters in California made a comment that the bands from the South weren’t as good as the Cali bands. They shut that down.
