This debut novel by Joelle Taylor is pretty special. The Night Alphabet was published in the UK in February 2024.

Your sort of book I think. One of those that won't suit everyone but the right readers will love.

I feel the same way as Angelia: this sounds right up my alley. I hope it will find a North American publisher.

So pleased to see another glowing review for this one. I have been so excited for this since I heard about the premise, and it didn't disappoint me. I loved it *so* much and definitely a contender for one of my favourite books of the year. Great review (and fair to warn people it might not be for everyone 😅).

Oh I'm thrilled to hear you loved it too. I am not hearing and seeing enough about it. I imagine it may get a look in on The Republic of Consciousness Prize. Have you read any of her poetry? I saw her perform C+nto and Othered Poems last summer and was blown away.

@@scallydandlingaboutthebook2711 I've not read her poetry, but I'm not a huge reader of poetry (definitely a me-problem!) But maybe I should. I was so convinced this would win the Women's Prize as it's such a startling and original book of stories about women. But alas. Hoping it will pop up on some other prize lists this year though - seems like Goldsmith's catnip to me, and dare I hope for the Booker?! 🤞

I am 2 thirds of the way through and loving it so much but had to put it down for a rest as so dark. Never had to put down I am so enjoying before which makes it special in a way. Means the writing is excellent. I want to finish it at some point so I can put it in my top books of year. Gutter Girls is my favourite story so far.
