The idea for the song came from Eric Stewart saying to his wife that if he kept saying "I Love You" over and over, it wouldn't mean anything even though he did love her. He recalled to The Guardian: "I met this gorgeous girl called Gloria at Halifax town hall. I was 18. She was 16. Three years later, we got married. A few years after that, Gloria told me: 'You don't say 'I love you' much anymore.' I told her that, if I said it all the time, it would sound glib. But I started wondering how I could say it without using those actual words. So 'I'm not in love' became a rhetorical conversation with myself - and then a song. I wrote the lyrics in a couple of days. The line, 'I keep your picture up on the wall, it hides a nasty stain' was about the crack in my bedroom wall at my parents' house in Manchester. I'd put a photograph of Gloria over it. When I took the song to the band, they said: 'I'm not in love'? What the f--k is that? You can't say that!' But Graham Gouldman, our bass-player and chord-master, agreed to work on it with me. We both liked The Girl From Ipanema, so we gave it a similar bossa nova style. Then Kevin Godley, our drummer, said it was crap. The guy in this song sounds like he's trying to convince himself he's not in love anymore, but he's not fooling us. That conflict stems from the title and helped make the song so poignant. In a Songfacts interview with Graham Gouldman, he explained: "I had the opening chords to it and it grew from there. Eric and I had always avoided a love song, but I was always convinced we could do a great one, and once again Eric came up with the title of that song, and it was the perfect title of an anti-love song. But of course, is it an anti-love song? Is it I'm not in love, or is it I am in love?" The whispered vocals of "Be quiet, big boys don't cry" came from the secretary of Strawberry Studios (the studio the band operated), Kathy Redfern. They were looking for a certain sound when Redfern entered the studio to quietly tell Eric Stewart he had a phone call. When they heard her voice, they knew it was right for the song. If y'all wanna have even more respect for this tune you need to search RU-vid for how they produced the backing vocals. I've been a musician for about 55 years and when I saw how they mixed the vocal tracks I was blown away. Too hard to explain it here. Essentially they each recorded single vocal notes and then played them back individually through the mix console and sat at the desk and "played" the notes by raising and lowering the channel faders. Three of them sang one note 16 times. That's a total of 48 voices for one note. Then they go on to the next note, same thing, and so forth. So 48 voices times 12 notes in a chromatic scale and you get a total of 576 voices if I'm remembering the process correctly. Not sure, but that documentary is awesome!

You will not ever see me saying otherwise. I think the 70s was the destilation and the maturity of what was great in the 60s. Also, electronic music came came of its own in the 70s and i love electronic music. And Pink Floyd.

10cc are massively underrated, and in their own quiet way, hugely experimental. They were a bit of a supergroup, musicians and songwriters that were suggested by Neil Sedaka to form a group and were very successful throughout the 70's, they were so versatile, they didn't really have a signature sound but were master songwriters.

My buddy told me an amusing story once. I hope I'm remembering it correctly, LOL! He and his father are driving in his dad's truck, and had just been having an argument. It was silent, so while his dad was driving, he turned the car radio on, and this 10cc song was playing. It was right up to the point where the female voice came on and said, "Be quiet", and his father instantly thought it was him telling his dad to be quiet! Right away, he says, "Don't tell me to be quiet!" We both bring that up when the song comes on!

I was a little older, 13 or 14 and this was absolutely my favorite song for quite a while. I was just at that age when I started having heavy duty crushes and thought I was falling in love. The song made me cry - especially that "big boys don't cry" line. I felt the singer must've felt so deeply for his love that he had to pretend he didn't to protect himself. This was the first deep song of my tender years, lol!

The way that 10CC recorded this song is fascinating. Each pitched voice is its own track; the mixing engineer essentially "played" the mix board. There was a documentary made about it; the name unfortunately escapes me.

We had 'an evening' with our class in a garage of a classmate's house. 1976. Primary school. I was the deejay, 11 years old, and in love with a girl in that same class. Not being a native speaker but just buying and borrowing 7-inches and playing them on these occasions. Playing The Beatles from the apple-label, but also The Trammps and everything that was in the top whatever of these days, like this one. Funny, to ask the girl you like to slow-dance on a song called "I'm not in love", but thankfully she accepted the invitation. Best 6 minutes of my life up to then...

I've always thought that the guy in the song is trying to convince HIMSELF that he's not in love yet the actions he describes says that he is...What always got me the most is that angelic choir of "Ahhhhh" in the background. The voice whispering, "Be quiet...big boys don't cry", was the studio secretary Kathy Redfern. The band had decided they liked the line but couldn't figure out how to work it in...and whose vocal to use. It just wasn't sounding 'right' with a male vocal. At that point the door to the control room opened and Kathy looked in and whispered 'Eric, sorry to bother you. There's a telephone call for you.' Lol jumped up and said 'That's the voice, her voice is perfect!' She had to be dragged into the studio ("frog-marched" in her words) by convincing her she wasn't even going to be singing...not even really talking....just whispering. So they recorded her voice track of the line, "Be quiet...big boys don't cry" and it ended up as the most recognizable part of "I'm Not In Love", arguably 10cc's biggest worldwide hit and the song that made them a household name in the U.S., peaking at #2 on Billboard Hot 100. And Kathy Redfern got a gold record out of it.

I bought the first of my thousands of records in 1960 in England and I promise you that 10CC are THE most underrated Group that Britain has produced. Like The Beatles, almost every song is COMPLETELY different from the next one. That was the short 4-minute version. The 7-minute version is mindblowing and it was The Secretary of The Band who was persuaded to say "Big Boys Don't Cry". You would not believe from 1975 what patience they had ro replicate that sound on a loop.

I LOVE 10CC! Their sound takes me back to my childhood, they were huge in the 70s. Unfortunately this wasn't the full version, there was a cut part way through the bridge. They had some huge hits like this track & "Dreadlock Holiday", "Art for Art's Sake", "I'm Mandy Fly Me" & "The Things We Do For Love". They also had quirky tracks like "One Night in Paris" which had three parts.

Two of the greatest ever multi layered tracks of all time were both released within months of each other back in 1975. Still today both “I’m not in love’” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” sound so fresh, original and groundbreaking.

I was a teenager when this came out, & in love with it. The girl singing was just a friend of theirs, not a singer, but beautiful too. It took them months to prepare the backing vocals. At the time it was sensational to listen to. 💝💝

Two of the members of the band Godley and Creme, basically invented the look of MTV in the 80s. They did some music, but their real impact was as music video directors. So many of the classic 80s music videos on MTV were directed by them.

You earned yourselves a sub. I just brought this song to my wife's attention. We're both 70's kids and these were the songs we would hear on the radio that are priceless. She almost cried. There's another dude that does the breakdown of this tune. He goes into all the detail, and the mixing was done many times over to make it sound as if there were 600 (?) or so singing the back round stuff. Like I said, you guys earned this one. Big boys don't cry was done by their secretary as they were recording. She walked in to let one of the guys know they had a call, and she whispered in a soft tone and when she walked out of the studio, they all looked at each other and one of the guys bolted after her, insisting that she sing those lines.

The recording of this song is unbelievably innovative. For the backing vocals, they recorded long single notes of each of the singers and put them on long tape loops on the many tracks. For the final mix, they turned the volume faders up and down on the notes they wanted at the specific time. They effectively played the mixing board as a musical instrument. Another interesting factoid is that the "Big Boys Don't Cry" part was spoken by the receptionist at the recording studio. They went out into the lobby and asked her if she wouldn't mind doing it.

I've always understood the song as being that he is DESPERATELY in love, so much so that he can't even kid himself. The "big boys don't cry" bit was whispered by the studio secretary, who happened to be there. EDIT: This is the version without the whispers! That's such an awesome part! EDIT AGAIN! It is there, dunno what I was hearing! The band are almost like two bands: Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart were behind the more commercial songs Iike this one, whereas Godley and Creme were more artsy. Godley and Creme have a great song post-10cc with an amazing video, especially for the time, called "Cry".

@@timoteo950 top 40 (AM radio) is less likely to play it, if it's 6-7 minutes long. Their (the top 40 radio programmer) has to get as many songs played every hour, as they can. If they want to get a song more exposure, they need to cut it down to the standard 3-4 minutes that most pop hits run.

Every member of this band is as talented as the next, Off-beat, melodic & funny at times.. this was a very spacey band with musical excellence , experimental at the time.. with backgrounds as songwriters of songs from the 60's and beyond.. and a couple of them were instrumental in the beginning of videos . You are right. Rarely has so much talent been packed into a quartet. All four were multi-instrumentalists. All four were singers. All four were (good) songwriters. They were inventive and often very witty. Many of their songs were, in one way or another, explorations of clichés - musical, lyrical or Hollywood/TV. So many quality great pop songs for the Rob Squad to choose from. I'd skip the early falsetto-led ones (Donna or Johnny Angel, for example) and get into The Dean And I, Rubber Bullets (a kind of Jailhouse Rock re-examined), the super-tongue-in-cheek Worst Band In The World, Wall Street Shuffle (sort of a companion piece to Pink Floyd's Money). My favourite single is probably I'm Mandy, Fly Me. Perhaps more interesting, though I guess more challenging for Jay and Amber, would be to take in one of their more complex album tracks. Somewhere In Hollywood, perhaps (from Sheet Music). Or the mini-suite One Night In Paris (from The Original Soundtrack). In either case, versions that show the lyrics would be smart.

Lead singer and co-writer of this song Eric Stewart came up with the idea for the tune after his wife, to whom he had been married for eight years at that point, asked him why he did not say "I love you" more often to her. Stewart said, "I had this crazy idea in my mind that repeating those words would somehow degrade the meaning, so I told her, 'Well, if I say every day "I love you, darling, I love you, blah, blah, blah", it's not gonna mean anything eventually'. That statement led me to try to figure out another way of saying it, and the result was that I chose to say 'I'm not in love with you, while subtly giving all the reasons throughout the song why I could never let go of this relationship." Loved this song when it was released in the mid-70s and still love it to this day. This band was revolutionary in how they recorded and produced this album, all way before any of the technology existed. Fil of Wings of Pegasus does a really good analysis and explanation of how they did it. Truly remarkable.

10cc is a brilliant Art Rock band that will bring you all kinds of different vibes and layers. They are one of those bands that their albums should be heard in their entirety. Their song list of what you should hear runs deep. I'm leaving out many songs I think should be heard but here are a few: "The Wall Street Shuffle", "Silly Love", "I'm Mandy Fly Me", "Art for Art's Sake", "Good Morning Judge", "The Things We Do for Love", "People in Love", "Dreadlock Holiday", "Reds in My Bed", and It's well worth the extra time to listen to "Feel The Benefit".

The group actually recorded the backing vocals in an interesting way. They collectively all sang/harmonized a note and recorded it. Then again and again and again... doing a full scale. Then had each play on a tape loop into a mixing board. Then labeled those channels as "notes. And "played" the mixing board faders like a keyboard to "play" the backing vocals. @@eyesofisabelofficial Again for me as with a lot of bands, it's their album tracks l love the most. Always loved Blackmail, it stands out as something special, no intro to the song, they just dive straight in with a super strong melody from the word go. The first two albums l think had the true 10cc feel, I think from The Original Soundtrack they were almost trying too hard to produce lengthy songs that for me lacked some of the 'charm' of their shorter snappier songs. This was evident l think with other bands from the same time, Eagles and Steely Dan come to mind, again with those two, it's their first few albums that l like the most.

An absolutely amazing band. This song is from 1975. They still tour today with a couple of changes to the line up but absolutely amazing live. I saw them do this live in England when it was released…now that ages me 😆 It’s still my all time favourite. And that layered sound was all done ‘pre - digital’ of course. Still sends a shiver down my back. “Be quiet, big boys don’t cry.” She was the receptionist at the recording studio; walked in for something else and they asked her to say the words. Better than one of the guys saying it, as was their intention. Great to see it still works across the generations. Oh, and I still have it on vinyl single as well as the album - many, many good memories being a 17 year old who was ‘growing up’. Love your channel.

This is one of my all time favourites. 10cc were one of the too groups of the 70s. Ive always been a fan.Godley and Creme were members who wrote many hits of the 70s. They recorded in a studio in Stockport UK ( not far from me). They asked the secretary to step in and record 'Big boys dont cry'. The rest is history. Thank you so much for reviewing this classic.

This song was so groundbreaking in so many ways, there is a 30 minute documentary on it. First, it's not a love song, but it is. Second, it started as a bossaova, but thanks to Keven Godley (the percussionist), it morphed into this cascade of angelic voices. Third, there was no synths back then; these guy's invented it. They spend hours and hours recoding their voices onto a looped tape, all in different chords, then, used these looped tapes to create the background. They added the piano, drums and bass later. Then, Fourth, the female voice saying "be quiet, big girls don't cry..." She was the studio receptionist, whom they recruited to come in and add something.... "here, say this into the microphone". History was made!
