we are all in agreement. May I also just touch on 'Needle and the damage done'. About the Heroin and the...damage done. Which he saw firsthand. you will feel it.
Neil Young is 75 years old now. This performance makes. Me. Weep. I mean, the depth of the message, seeing him young like this and knowing that he appreciated the old man for his whole life when he was just a young man of 24, and knowing that he himself is an “old man” now… oh, it just gets me right in the heart 💜.
@@helpendguardianabuse8878 He’s one of the most prolific song writers and talented vocalists of his generation. He will never die because his music will live on and he will be remembered. Neil YOUNG forever.
Fun Fact: Neil Young is also the godfather of the Grunge movement. From Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young to Grunge of the early 90's, he's lived a long and interesting life.
@@TheDivayenta I love the people , ok lets see this Bob Dylan ones as well, there jaws drop :) And then they have so so much to explore , "A man needs a maid" in Barking town hall , Famous for its acoustics, for example
There's a studio version with a bunch of other instruments, but for me this live solo version is the most powerful. His clear-as-a-bell voice really comes through.
i'm a fellow canadian and contemporary of neil young. i commented a few minutes ago and said the same thing. that lyric is phenomenal....also like a coin that won't get tossed rolling back to you. got his writing ability from his father.....
You ever see these lyrics ? Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way Kicking around on a piece of ground in your hometown Waiting for someone or something to show you the way Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain You are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today And then one day you find ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older Shorter of breath and one day closer to death Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say
Neil Young was always so real, so authentic. And his songwriting showed how deeply he looked at life's simple experiences. He is a storyteller and a deep thinker. And that *u.n.i.q.u.e* voice.
His Southern Man is an iconic song. It's "controversial" and a funny history to the song, being critical about Southerners. Then Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote Sweet Home Alabama giving Neil crap for being critical about the South. I'm a Southerner and don't care one way or another but Neil did apologize years later saying it was stupid what he was saying about the SOUTHERN MAN. They actually respect each other.
Tom H. Always felt like " Southern Man" was a song about a specific time back during slavery in the south and the kkk trying to use the bible to justify their actions. I don't think he was condemning the south at the present time of the songs release. Also I don't think he believes it's a stupid song.
It was a feud that was blown way of proportion. They had the utmost mutual respect for one another. In Lynyrd Skynyrd's iconic live version of 'Free Bird' from Oakland in 1977, Ronnie is wearing a Neil Young t-shirt.
Wow... you guys are killing me... Neil Young is one of my favs... love you discovering these great master peices from back in the day... thank you for this and all your work :) x
The 70’s produced so many incredibly talented singer/songwriters. These artists also helped each other succeed without needing credit. Neil Young is still going strong.
I hope this leads to classic Neil Young songs like Harvest Moon, Down by the River, Heart of Gold, Southern Men ... plus his work with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, Wooden Ships, Helpless, Our House...
Great reaction, this is one of my favorite songs of all time. A couple weeks ago I actually got the opening line “Old man look at my life, I’m a lot like you were” tattooed on my shoulder for my grandfather who raised me. My grandfather is still with me and i live with him and he loves it.
"OHIO".A collab with Crosby, Stills, and Nash. In the late 60's, the National Guard was called in to Kent State, a college in Ohio. After some altercation, they opened fire on the protesting students killing 4 of them. Very powerful song.
Lost my dad when I was 8. I always think of him and connect to him whenever I hear this song. Love Neil Young. He's also outstanding in Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.
This was a special performance. The song is from the album Harvest, which is full of these kind of beauties. It’s a sensational and succesfull album. At this BBC performance he played a lot of that album, which wasn’t released yet. So the adienced was presented with the work of what was gonna be a big succesfull album
Neil is a living legend. His catalogue is deep and he is still playing. Try a song like Tonight's The Night or Harvest and you can appreciate the song writing and talent this man has....
I can't imagine how blown away you get hearing an extraordinarily beautiful song by a mega talent like Neil Young for the first time ever. I grew up listening to him, have seen him in concert, and still get just absolutely love his music.
Truth …”just an artist with their voice and guitar, …” This is called talent. So few ‘artists’ of today can hold a crowd with their talent alone … instead they rely on costume, visual/sound effects, dance, support musicians to carry them. There was so much talent 50 years ago, but sadly it is very rare these days.
Amazing songwriter of the 70’s snd truly a voice for the Vietnam era generation. From soft acoustic solo songs to the heaviest grunge rock you’ve ever heard. Try Cowgirl in the Sand official remastered version. You will be absolutely blown away!
Neil Young - “Down By The River” I didn’t get into Neil until later in my musical journey. Don’t make the same mistake, he’s a legend. I saw him play live in London and that sealed the deal for me, I dove deep on his catalogue after that.
Now you understand why we (those that are older) wonder where the the "Singer-Songwriters" went. From a lot of your reaction videos I've watched, you seem to connect, to be touched, by the Singer-Song-writers of late 60s and 70s. Neil Young, Harry Chapin, Billy Joel, etc. are all from that era and all pull at the heart strings. They are the best singers, or the best songwriters, but they had a way of touching the heart and soul of those that heard them.
A Canadian icon! He was a member of two legendary bands of the 60s and he ranges form folk like Old Man to raunchy distortion electric like Hurricane. His catalogue is huge and filled with amazing songs!
Nice to see how much you like Neil, Harvest came out when I was in college, I knew him from CSN&Y hard rocking only, this album and THIS SONG changed me. This is the best version that I have heard of this song. Glad you want more.
I've sang this song with my brother so many times it's part of my dna 😆 but Neil Young is amazing! He gained notoriety being a member of the folk band Crosby Stills Nash and Young he left the band to pursue a solo career.
The introduction to the chorus and the chorus itself is a one of the most beautiful riffs i ever heard, it gives me goosebumps every time- I can't do anything other than sing along, I heard this song for the first time when I was 23 years old. 30yrs ago, today i am the "old" man, enjoy your young age, that's what I always tell my sons, that´s the way it is...
I have an interesting perspective on this. I listened to Neil Young when I was in my 20s and now with my 70th birthday in November of this year I am the old man. You are absolutely correct when you say that if an artist can be stripped down to the most basic levels and still show extraordinary talent they are the ones that will last. Neil Young is still performing.
Try listening to 'The Needle and the damage done" from this same session. Amazing. PS This session was done in England, which is why he felt the need to explain what a ranch and ranch hand is. Also, during this session, he has a harmonica hanging on his neck. Neil Young is legendary. For a romantic sound for you both, I would recommend "Harvest moon". Light some candles, have a glass of wine, and get ready to slow dance. Peace.
This is song to me was the fact he could understand what the old man was seeing feeling! Make the most of your life’s, it’s flys by in the later years! And just love this man’s voice!
He’s also known, believe it or not, as The Godfather of Grunge, because when the spirit calls him he calls his band Crazy Horse together and they play excellent loud, feedback-filled rock & roll, and they’ve been doing it for 50 years. Check out “Cinnamon Girl”, “Hey Hey My My”, or “Love To Burn”. I’ve seen him play a country show at Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnic (Powderfinger), an acoustic show (Heart Of Gold), a loud feedback show (Cinnamon Girl), and one with an acoustic set followed by an electric set. He does what he wants. He’s a legend.
It's so cool how Neil Young can do these wonderful acoustic songs but also really awesome electric stuff. A lot of range. "Cinnamon Girl" is a great rocker, "Harvest Moon" is sweeet and romantic, and "The Needle and the damage Done" will definitely make you cry.
Neil Young was a poet . . Here at his most evocative and beautiful . . The BBC and London were lucky to him as a visitor for which we can thank the Beatles even in the year after they broke up (1971) He was Canadian and moved to L.A. to join Buffalo Springfield later Crosby Stills Nash and Young . . The young English audience are equally compelling and appreciative like the next generation of The Who's My Generation . . Which having seen you're reaction to The Who I know you'll understand . .This song and Heart of Gold are from Harvest which Young later dismissed but is among the very greatest of his albums. Thank you again I truly love your channel and reactions as one who lives in England . .
Neil's introduction and explanation takes account of the fact he's performing this for a British audience, on the BBC's '...In Concert' series. Just the play-out and ambient guitar makes me picture a ranch and plains stretching away as far as the eye can see, all directed by that mesmeric voice. David Crosby would later recall their first meeting and how Young sat and 'played a couple of the best songs I'd ever heard in my life' - a sign of what was to come.
Neil Young is definitely on the Mt. Rushmore of '60's/'70's singer/songwriters. So many great songs to choose from, but I would suggest "Sugar Mountain". Also, his work with Crosby Stills and Nash is phenomenal, especially "Ohio", look it up to get the full meaning of that song. As always, love the vibe y'all put out, your inclusivity is refreshing.
My father was 76 and my mother 70. My father died from an unknown respiratory virus and my mother from covid. The worst part of the whole thing was my brother, sister, and myself couldn't be there for her in the hospital due to the pandemic.
Neil does a great solo career but the CSN, Crosby Stills and Nash were the band if my generations soul. Then Neli joined them off and on and they were CSNY, Crosby Stills Nash and Young. All of that music is exceptional. Historical.
This is the first song my brother learned on the guitar in 1972. I heard it every day for months. It still remains one of my favorite Neil Young songs.
This is my favorite style of music to listen to, and you should start reacting to Ray LaMontagne and enjoy the pureness of his talent. Jolene is my favorite of his (acoustic version) and trouble. But he has so many good songs
For your next Female Friday respond to the "Circle Game" Joni Mitchels 's take to getting older in response to Neil's song.. Joni is must. Take a dive and you will see why everyone from Led Zeppelin to Prince sing the most high praises. Deep catalogue form the 1960s-now.
Adore both Neil and Joni. My son just turned 18 and we listened to Neil’s Sugar Mountain and Joni’s Circle Game on his birthday. They both make me cry. Joni is a legend. 🇨🇦
This is one of my very favorite songs. I am old enough to remember hearing this song when it first came out. I wasn't much younger than Neil is, here in this song. I thought then that anyone that young who could put themselves in the place of one who was older - as Neil did in the lyrics here - must be a truly empathetic and good person. I still feel that way today. Neil Young was part of the super-great rock group Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. I remember hearing their stuff in the 1970's and beyond. They have a whole catalogue of great hits. Neil Young eventually left the group to pursue a solo career. But while he was with them, he wrote one of CSNY's greatest hits - Ohio. It is about the time in 1970, in Ohio, where the Ohio National Guard was called out by Ohio's Governor to go to Kent State University and basically "peace-keep" for a group of students who were non-violently protesting the U.S. involvement in Vietnam at that time. The National Guard started shooting unarmed students in the crowd. When the dust had literally settled, four students had been killed and 9 others were wounded. When Neil Young first heard about it on the news, band member David Crosby says he saw Young literally walk off by himself and write this song in a very short time. They called and got a studio almost immediately so they could go and record the song while their feelings of outrage were so fresh on their minds. I would highly suggest you check out that song, "Ohio". I live in Ohio, and was in Junior High School when the song came out. We lived in Cincinnati, about 3 1/2 hours from Kent State University. It was huge news not only in Ohio, but all around the country, if not the world. And if you do react to it, you might want to use this version of the music video because it actually has photos from the shootings: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MN_9VqfVQ9c.html&ab_channel=peaceandfreedom2011
My first encounter with the Music of Neil Young was way back in the early 70s when he was part of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. The sheer level of talent in that ensemble was amazing. But, Later on, in the late 70's I heard these really awesome songs called 'Rust Never Sleeps' and 'Like a Hurricane' from his album Rust Never Sleeps and I was hooked. When you listen to this album and its companion, Live Rust, you are listening to the start of what would, 12 years afterwards, come to be called "the Seattle Sound" or "Grunge". But that ALL started with "Rust" and THAT is how influential Neil Young has been over his whole career. And his purely solo work is Astonishing.
niel young is a canadian legend he was with a band called crosby stills nash and young a great band when you get a chance put up some of their material its a must
I'm really glad you get to experience Neil Young acoustically. This was before he was with Crosby stills and Nash. He's a hidden talent who writes such deep songs songs. It's hard for me to believe you've never heard of Neil Young before now but your young so that's way I'm sure. Enjoy and check his other solo song album.
Listen to “Ohio” about the shooting at the University that aided in The Revolution Neil Young was a voice of reason in a time of heartache The other, very beautiful song “Harvest Moon” lovely tune
@@crhu319 Other bands are attempting to do the Edmond Fitzgerald? And probably screwing it up royally. No one can do that song like Gordon w/ his deep resonating voice.
Saw him many years ago play with just his guitar no amplification the first hour of the concert at the Orpheum in Vancouver, then blew the roof off the second half of the show one of the best concerts I have ever been to.
So many great Neil Young songs to choose from!! “Needle & the Damage Done” is especially poignant. Of course, he was great with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young & his years with Crazy Horse!
