What a waste of 1k in Snap On Sockets

I have used and abused these sockets over the coarse of the last 12 months and it was only today that I realized how much I actually spent on Snap-On Sockets. It was enough to make me puke. I wouldn't recommend that anyone buy this product when you could have bought a Career supply of sockets from anyone else.

I broke a thin wall socket from snapon. After a 20 minute argument with the snapon guy over whether I abused it or not, he finally replaced it. It was the last snapon product I've ever bought. Never looked back.

@TheJR1948 lol. Yeah, a 10mm quarter drive socket would be a hard sell by telling me THAT is out of stock. Might as well tell me you don't know what a Phillips screwdriver is... Haha hahaha! I'm betting you are right generally speaking though. I hate salesmen. I've literally thrown my share of hucksters out of my shop in the past. They seem to get worse every year.

Worked at a repair shop years ago and MAC Tools would come by once a week. Bought a few things from the truck and then a few months later, one of the MAC tools failed. Waited for the guy to come in, told him the tale and he said "buddy, I am out of that one right at the moment. Catch me next week." Next week, same excuse but he always wanted to sell you something else. After the third or fourth week of hearing the same lame excuse, we ditched him. ALWAYS out of anything that needed a replacement but no shortage of other tools to sell you. He went out of business.

The main quality of the Snap-on sockets is that they have a thinner wall than less expensive sockets. This helps OCCASIONALLY in hard to reach areas. The flank drive and durable chrome finish are nice too. I bought mine 30+ years ago before I was married. Professional mechanic all my life.

@Sam Squanch Chinese tools aren't necessarily and worse than American tools. It all depends upon what the company pays for. I do some import from China and the items can be just as good as what's made in America, assuming you're willing to pay for the quality and oversight. The problem, is that a lot of people send production to China in order to save money and at this point, Chinese labor is expensive enough that you don't really save much money without also cutting corners.

Has been moved several times to different shops and though it gets a few laughs from others, is all it needs to be, a storage container. I have SnapOn sets socket sets (1/4, 3/8 & 1/2 from 1970, (no metric). Soon after that, Craftsman tools, now it's "cheaper but good" tools. Lots of money for a lean time but I still have the SnapOn sets with, amazingly, nothing missing. I'm sure, over time, a few sockets were replaced but since it was SnapOn, they were replaced with (grind your teeth here) new SnapOn sockets. PS.... I REALLY like the large font Laser engraved sizes on some tools. I don't understand why all decent tools are not laser engraved. Pretty sure it's not that expensive to do.

Good video, your'e a brave man for doing it. I've been a mechanic since the late 70's before Snap-Off was fleecing mechanics world wide and we have an old saying, "Bad workman blames his tools" If someone rounds off the head of a fastener its not the tools fault, it's the fault of the fool holding the tool. If the bolt is locked up and the multi hex socket is at risk of round off the head, use a single hex socket.

Now when it comes to specialty tools, Scan Tools, & even Cordless. I'm al about Snap-On so long as that Mechanic or Technician can afford them. Not to sound like an ass, but I cannot understand ANYONE'S reasoning for wanting to buy Snap-On tools unless it's purely a vanity or just ignorance thing......."Look at me, I have Snap-On tools". Owning Snap-On tools DOESN'T make ANYONE a better mechanic and as far as I'm concerned it does nothing more than point out someone who has almost absolutely no financial common sense. There are alternative muuuuuuuuuuch cheaper brands out there that are just as good and with the SAME warranties. My experience has been this, I work on power sports. Motorcycles, side by sides, snowmobiles, and Wheelers. Like he said I've not rounded off a bolt with Snappy. I have with craftsman, husky and Pittsburg. These fasteners ain't always hiding under a hood. I have some picky customers. And if I ever do with Snappy, my dealer is going to take that shit back no questions asked. He doesn't care that I like to party and put chrome on my impact. I've been argued with, told no to the other life time warranty because I'm a professional. And I've had to waist my precious free time to do it. I get paid going on the truck. The average 3/8 socket cost about $25 to $30 from Snap-on. It takes me about an hour to replace a craftsman socket, if they have it in stock. An hour of my time is more than $20. Remember time is money.

@@TraceyAllen Try Stanley. I've got a set of Stanley sockets and even on my crappy Kawi fasteners, I haven't had them slip. Even though most of the fasteners were somewhat rounded over by previous owners and usually fit in between the sizes. Modern sockets with the arced sides shouldn't be touching, let alone rounding, the fasteners over like that. If you're rounding things off, it's not the tool, it's the person using the tool improperly. This is in contrast to older models where the steel wasn't necessarily as good and the design depended more upon having those nice crisp edges to work on. Since I switched to the newer style Stanley sockets I haven't stripped a single bolt. I'm sure that Snap On makes nice tools, but for the cost, I could buy at least a dozen equivalent sockets without necessarily sacrificing any quality.

Given the fact that the impact gun is what makes nut busting easy, it's not a surprise a cheap socket works just as well the socket is only there to transfer the hammering energy. As long as it fits well, and that is the case on many vehicles and fasteners, a cheap impact socket will suffice. All impacts will be made of a softer steel anyway to avoid shattering.

Some snap-on stuff is better, some mid tier stuff will do just fine. You just have to be smart enough to figure out which is right for you. I think it was silly to spend that much on 12p chromes, but if you spent that on impacts nobody would bat an eye. You can get chromes that are 98% of what the snap ons are for about $150 from a mid tier. The tool truck impact sockets are the best, the right material and much thinner than the knock offs. And you'll have a replacement in your hand by the end of the week when you break it or wear it out (and you will). Ratchets are another thing. My matco locking flex was worth every penny, best ratchet I've ever used hands down. Sure, the harbor freights are much better these days and they are pretty strong, but when you have a tool in your hand all day, it's nice to have the tightest and most versatile ratchet ever made. Pneumatic impact tools, I've worn out countless IR guns, never worn out a Matco. Electric guns all wear out too fast, even the truck brands. Buy the Ryobi, Dewalts or Makita, maybe the Milwaukee(but they aren't that much better for the price and are going down hill). The Snap On or Matco ones will last twice as long, but cost 4x as much, not a good value. Be smart with your money and do the research.
@TASCO26
@TASCO26 6 лет назад
I think the question a lot of people should be asking themselves is this: How long will this tool sit in my tool box and how often will I be using it? If you can justify spending 100s of dollars for Snap On or other expensive brands due to the fact you use the tool everyday....then yeah, the price you pay will be worth it. But if you like most others who use their tools once and a while (weekend warriors) Kolbalt, Craftsman, and the like should be just fine.

Back in my college days I worked at a SOHIO station as a gas lot monkey. I got drawn in by the Mac Tools truck. I spent a hell of a lot of book money on Mac tools. All sockets, SAE and metric along with the nice standard and long spanners. They are nice tools! They are like jewels. They have lasted my home DIY garage work for decades. I like the individual blow-molded cases for the various ratchet sets. Makes it easy to tell when a socket is unaccounted prior to returning things to the tool chest. Jokingly, I use the old wife joke, "I love my wife. But, if I had to do it over again knowing what I know now..." Harbor Freight is right down the road and open seven days a week.

Snap on does not have a lifetime guarantee. They have a limited lifetime warranty to the original purchaser. Second hand Snap-on Tools are not covered. Unless you buy them brand new you have no legal valid warranty. For the price of Snap-on they should have a lifetime guarantee like husky ,kobalt, Tekton, Craftsman and Pittsburgh to name a few.

Snap-on's lifetime guarantee used to make it worth it. Buy Snap-on? Buy once. But two things have happened: Snap-on's Prices have continued to go up, up, up and up. Meanwhile numerous other toolmakers have offered lifetime warrantees which just makes Snap-on - as great a tool as they usually are - and as Made in USA as they are - just too expensive to be practical for many, many people and now they are so damned expensive, even pros are deserting the brand. I also have a Stanley socket kit that I've had since 1990 and they got alot of miles on them without failure! Hell it took over 20 years to finally wear out the Stanley 3/8 ratchet! I also have a set of Klutch impact sockets I got from Northern tool in a big kit and I've hammered the hell out of them without failure. I'll probably switch the Klutch out for Icon as the Klutch are not stamped on the side and the sizes are slowly getting scratched off. There's no reason an auto mechanic in the UK earning around £18k > £19k+ a year (working for someone else's business) should be spending £20K to £30K plus in finance debt on tools & sometimes each year when new stuff is out. I've heard people on here say they've £60K Snap-on finance debt! That's nothing to be proud of. I know people will say their tools earn their living as the cliché excuse but, in the above scenario, they're really not. They are doing the opposite & getting them into years of debt. You're basically working for 3/4 years of life for nothing. Just to pay for them. Similar situation for me as an engineer. You work to put money in the bank, so to speak. Not to ponce about to work mates. It's just not economically viable. They then have to pay bills & everything else, so they won't pay £20K in tools debt back for about 10 years at least, so how long for 60K? It's not really an investment if your still paying it off at retirement. Your better off picking some decent other branded (like the MATCO in vid) stuff with warranty that won't let you down & can be replaced just in case or 2nd hand Snap-on & then get some decent other cheaper industrial quality duplicate tools, again a warranty would be good. Then have a choice: 1.use them slightly cheaper ones as everyday beaters knowing that you always have a decent backup to rely on while they go off under warranty. Or 2. Do things the opposite, use your good stuff day in day out & the determined decent cheaper stuff as emergency back ups. Still a lot, LOT cheaper. Another way is a good partially expensive brand set & replace a single socket or tool when / if it breaks with the best you can buy. Buying only a single Snap-on or whatever tool out right every few years won't cost a lot. & you will find it's only the tools or sizes you use a lot of that would break & would be worth spending a lot on anyway. That way your income mounts up in the bank & pays the bills & doesn't go down the drain on a finance bill. Here they tend to have a mixed bag of tools. Most of the career mechanics here won't spend even half of their yearly income on tools, many even rather spend £25 on 3 of the same tool for a decent import even that would last a few years combined, over £60 for 1 that would last the same on it's own. It's the better product but, it still cheaper to buy the multiple items for the same time frame. A lot of ways to look at it. Warranties are always good because, you can get another even when broke. But if I have something that fails, I usually think oh dear, I think it's time to try something different anyway! Not too keen on that etc. If it lasted for years before hand, then that might be different.

He said the first ratchet he ever bought was a Husky. The second one he bought for work in the garage was a Snap-on. I was kinda surprised because he is always money conscious and asked him about Craftsman during that time. He said, "Oh they were very expensive" and he went with the Snap-on so at some point in time, Craftsman may have demanded a more premium price than Snap-on but of course the tables have turned since then, mainly because I think Snap-on feels they are the premier USA made tool company. To me though, I have a thing for the 50's-60's Craftsman stuff especially the V series and I love restoring them!

I run Sunex sockets. They're flanked just like snapon, and have been holding up dutifully for years as a professional mechanic.

I've been using the duralast line for years and have yet to break one or have it fail when I need it. They're well worth their cost.

Duralast (Autozone) is good for hand tools. Never had one of their power tools. Duralast vehicle electronics can eat sht and die.

It's sad because new techs out of schools think they gotta spend big. First job, they go in debt like $25,000-50,000 on a Snap-on tool case, tool set.. and the Snap-on van comes once a week to collect from the mechanics. I saw techs with fricken Porter Cable Harbor Freight impact guns and tools side by side with techs with Snap-on. Like the OP said, its about how you use them. If you break a cheap socket, chances are you got lifetime warranty and/or its cheap enough to just buy another.

I am no mechanic but have been buying Snap-On for over 50 years, almost all used, but selected for good condition. Excellent resale value when I am done.

huh face - Yes. Found my favorite 3/8 ratchet in a junk yard car, a perfect Snap-On pear-head F720, also my favorite screwdriver, a vintage Snap-On hollow handle with all 4 bits! I used to be one lucky dude - then I discovered women & it's been downhill since :-/

Phuck snap on!!!! Once you leave your garage of employment good luck on getting a replacement for your broken tools. I have had 3 broken ratchets for 10 years . I no longer work in the field but from my house. I carry my broken tools in my truck in case I see a snap on truck. When I do, I stop in and bring them my tools. I have heard every excuse why they cant help me. I am on my way to a meeting, I am training some one right now and dont have the time, I am on my way to an emergency stop for a customer. Really?? what happened to the customer service?

Is there any scientific data showing that their metal alloy is stronger when dropped, torqued, frozen, or heated? If not, then there is no difference... the duralast is probably made down the street with the same recycled battle ship steel in China.. I remember when I was a kid in the 90's, Craftsman was considered the best and lasted forever. Snap-on sounds like some cheap shit that will break off. I'm no mechanic but just noticing the names of two brands, and one was Huge when I was a kid, and Snap-on sounds like kids toys as an adult now.

Chinese steel mostly comes from ore mined here in Australia, not from Battleships :D

In the late 80s I worked at Dearborn Tools in Rogers Arkansas........and we made wrenches ratchets and sockets in there. ...we produced snap on, Stanley, Mac and craftsmen in the same plant....mostof the steel was the same, but the dies for forging each tool and quality control were where the differences came in Mac and snap on dies were more precise where as the craftsman and Stanley tools tolerances were a lil more relaxed......don’t get me wrong..... all were good tools but the tolerances make a lot of differences in the final product.

Check the Rockwell hardness chart on the steel used from any of the mfg's and you'll solve your own question easily.

buying the best tools are important when your income relies on it. Just imagine driving 60 mi. to repair a wind turbine, climb up hundreds of stairs and starting work with your Craftsman ratchet. All of a sudden, the ratchet starts to slip. "Oh gees, I'm glad I bought a Craftsman ratchet for the warranty" is NOT what the repair guy is going to say!

You’re $5k snap on socket set will not outperform my Pittsburgh, or my Craftsman socket set. I’ve used and abused my socket sets with 3ft cheater bars for 12+ years and still not broken them. And guess what, if I break one, I have a backup in my truck. BECAUSE I CAN AFFORD TO HAVE A BACKUP! People who spend the money on snap on tools are fools. And btw my HF Pittsburgh ratchet is my favorite. Absolutely amazing ratchet.

Hell, when you're trying to get a job done and a socket breaks, warranty is pretty much irrelevant. You're going to go (or send someone) down to the local store to grab whatever is available on the shelf. Most old-timer toolboxes are filled with a hodgepodge of pieces from various manufacturers. Have to almost wonder about anyone with a perfect, complete, set of name-brand tools.
