What Actually Causes Painful Neck Cervical Stenosis?

Cervical stenosis, or narrowing of the spine bones onto the spinal nerves, is potentially a serious diagnosis that many people get surgery for.
In reality, surgery is rarely done for this condition. But many people never fully resolve the condition enough to get excellent long-term pain relief. They simply manage the pain and learn how to live with it. They figure out how to cope using medications, injections, and other short-term relief treatments.
But it’s possible in many cases to get more mobility in the neck bones and take pressure off the neck joints. This will un-pinch the nerves in the neck and take pressure off the joints to keep them healthy for the long-term
In this video, Dr. David explains what actually causes painful neck cervical spinal stenosis.

I started working on my neck following your instructions and I have to say, I've found relief on my neck. I wasn't able to turn my head or sleep at night without pain. I had a second cervical neck surgery 2 years ago and now find myself in worse shape than before surgery. I started doing the stretches you recommended and to my delight I have found relief. Thank you so much for your information.

I recently got a diagnosis of cervical stenosis, in the C4 to C7 region. Very severe, on the right side only. Not sure what caused it, but was told I have the spine of someone who is 20 years older than my current age. I am in pain every day, and it’s gotten so much worse over the last year or two. These exercises you displayed, are useful and simple to do. Thank you for creating this type of helpful content. 🙂🙏🏿

Surgery is not always the solution, I had two cervical neck surgeries now I have spurs which causes severe pain. I started the neck stretches recommended and my pain is a lot less than it used to be.

I’m not crazy! I love you!!!! Have stenosis and while it’s better my index finger is constantly numb, doctors have given me injections and told me it’s going to be this way the rest of my life. Lately been having issues with urinating and tingling/burning in my penis, swear it has to do with how numb my finger is, so it comes and goes. Checked my prostate and it’s fine. Told my doctor and he says no way it’s the nerve in my finger. I sometimes feel like I’m losing my mind so just hearing this makes me feel better. I really hope I can fix this cuz I’m only 49 but don’t know who is capable of helping.

I just turned 50 and have all the same (except the penis numbness as I'm female lol) but I have had public area numbness. My index finger and thumb were the most numbness out of all my fingers. Also my big toe lost feeling for months. Doctor diagnosed cervical stenosis with moderate to severe degenerative disc disease in the c-4 through c-7 spine, bone spurs, and a couple other things happening in there with the discs leaking out or "extruding".He referred me to physio and told me to use ice/heat and Tylenol/ibuprofen. I've developed neurological symptoms now that are really scary but doctor said he isn't going to refer me to neurology because he says it would be too difficult to tease through the info. Basically, if it's not a tumor then they don't want to bother. He might have just as well said " well you're not going to live forever anyway so don't worry about it". To be fair though I can't begin to know what they know about diagnosis. I DO know that just because a Dr says "oh there's no correlation between the two " doesn't mean it's true.

Dr. David, I've watched numerous YT videos and visited many Interweb sites about this topic. This is one of the better videos for sure. You describe the affliction very well. I suffer with this and with Lumbar and Thoracic spinal issues as well. I have Spondy in the spine vertebrae and Facet Joints. Radiculopathy into the arms (the left worse), and Shoulders (the right is worse?) ... Yes, Cervical Instabilities (CI) Does Affect the Central Nervous system. Although my Pain Management / Physiatrist Doctor does not agree, but CI can affect and cause Temporal Headaches, TMJ issues, (I do), Chronic Sinusitis, Tinnitus, even IBS /GERD, Chest muscle pain (Costochronditis), and Bladder and Bowel incontinence. I'm 71 YO, Male, retired now (due to Disabilities as described), with Chronic Pain / terrible stiffness, which wreaks Havoc with my overall Well Being. I will call your attention to Dr. Ross Hauser of Caring Medical Channel, who is a big proponent of treating CI in a big way. He is an advocate of ProloTherapy. But if one should watch - you will learn how Crucial the Cervical Spine is to your health. Although My Pain Management Dr., says No - that CI will not affect your Sinuses, or eye or ear pain or TMJ, my ENT says Just The Opposite. He says, Yes, the nerves in the neck go Up and Down. C1 and C2 can impact the Vagus Nerve(s) [there is one on each side of your body]. Look up The Vagus Nerve!! THX for this Video. PS: Be Aware of Tech Neck - some Chiros say will be the next Major Epidemic in the World dwarfing Diabetes.

I just reviewed this video. David, you are so Spot On!! I'm 72 yo now, and a sufferer of Cervical and Lumbar Stenosis. Lately for some reason, my left side Neck, Trap (it's hard a sa rock) and shoulder are experiencing "buzzing", Electrical type pains that weakens the arm - though still functional. It ignites upon only certain movements of the left arm. I have begun some months ago to get back into lifting light weights, doing more aerobic exercise on an Elliptical machine at home, and more general stretching and more Core strengthening exercises (they have helped with the lower back). I am limited to more "static" exercises because I am Bone On Bone in the right knee and getting closer to that in the left knee - the left Hip has arthritis too. Amazing how the Human Body is in Symmetry! My 1" shorter right leg for over 55 years which ws left unaddressed for 15 years or so has taken a major toll on my body via the Spinal affects including Dextroscoliosis and Degenerative Disc Disease.

Some exercises I will try. I already do the hanging sometimes but for different reasons initially. I was diagnosed with cervical stenosis in 2012 when my shoulders and arms began tingling and going numb. First off, I got checked for heart and stroke problems and was OK and referred to an Orthopedic doc. After an MRI I got the stenosis diagnosis. My doctor's suggestion for therapy was swimming and at least for me, eliminated most of the symptoms. A swimming coach was big on hanging to help improve your streamline pushing off the walls but I guess it's been helping the stenosis, too. Thanks for your videos. I have bad knees, too and that's where I first discovered your videos.

Mine started in my early 30s. I had 3 babies before 30, and I carried all 3 of them on my left side. The third one I carried a lot until he was 5 years old. That pressure just kept building and building, leaving me with horrible neck and shoulder pain with pinching. Now I'm 41, and I still have so much pain. I also just did a ton of resting after a hysterectomy, so everything eels extra painful. I had started physical therapy before surgery, but insurance only covered so many visits. I will be doing your exercise suggestions many times per day.

BINGO! I’m extremely grateful to you for these videos, and relieved that I found your channel this evening. You obviously respect your patients and the general public. I’m 51 and have been diagnosed with cervical spine stenosis, of which the surgeon would be ready to operate if I am (I am NOT), and osteoarthritis of the knees (one is getting very angry; same one that got a new ACL in 2015; from what I’ve read, surgical procedures increase the likelihood and/or severity of arthritis), lower back (no pain yet, yay!), and hips. I wonder if genetics plays a part in all of this, because my dad had all of the same issues, and still does after two hip replacements and a laminectomy-and I’m the spitting image of him. I’m a firm believer in weight training now, and for decades have practiced yoga and exercised pretty well. I will be busy for a while binge-watching all of your videos. This is my new favorite channel. THANK YOU 😊🎉

Hi Doctor , I've had this for three years. I've been following your exercises and believe I am improving! The 3rd one, the hanging, I wish you showed more of your lower body too, cause I don't quite understand it. I've tried what I think is what you are doing and it feels like my sides or arms are going to rip off! I wish I could see just how much you "hang". Thanks! Ps if there are other videos you know of that I can look spat, let me know! In any case, thanks! I've watched 20 different videos and yours seems to inspire me the most, you have a good calming voice, and you are a great guy!

I have severe neuronal, foraminal stenosis and kyphosis, and a bunch of other arthritic related stuff going on in my 4-5, 5-6 cervical area, my number one symptom or severe intractable headaches. After two years in a neck brace, I started going to a yoga class that focused on posture and learning about that, and ergonomics and swimming every day helped enormously however now I get a headache whenever I seem to irritate or aggravate whatever is causing that spasm on my right side - lifting light wts even does it-of my neck and down into the top of the scapula.. when I first had the headaches on a 24 seven basis for two years my doctor told me I needed surgery but the surgeon I consulted said I didnt need it and i noted i did not have the typical symptoms of cervical , although I did sometimes have pain through my shoulder into my arm when it was really bad I think he meant I didn't have the weakness, dizziness commonly listed. I noticed that you did not mention headaches and as I said, that is the number one thing I suffer from I also suffer from pulsatile tinnitus on that side and wonder if that isn't related to the compression so that I hear the swishing of the blood from being so squished on that side. I am praying that your exercises will help me.

I was diagnosed with Cervical Stenosis in the cervical and lumbar spine about 20 years ago. I also have arthritis and boney growths, (osteophytes) in the joints of my spine. Trying to get a specialist to help me is impossible, as you say in your video all they recommend is painkillers, which my doctor will not give me because of my heart problem. I am 77 years of age and have heart disease, diabetic neuropathy, prostate disease etc. I believe that is why they don't want to help me. I have reached a stage now where I am losing the use of my legs and hands. I fall easily because of the weakness in my legs, plus I get dizzy due to my neck stenosis. I have thought about suicide but I never will because of the hurt this would cause my wife, plus I love life. I live in Britain and our National System has failed, it can take weeks to see a doctor and sometimes years to see a specialist.

Hello Doctor: Thank you for explaining Cervical Spinal Stenosis. I have suffered from spinal stenosis for years. With pain radiating down my arm. I also have lower back pain, that radiates down my leg. In physical therapy, I have never did the neck exercises that you demonstrated. I knew that the pain was a contributing factor to getting older and arthritis setting in my joints. However, growing up in an abusive household. My father would slap my face followed by a karate chop to my neck. I thought that the blows to my neck, was also a factor in my cervical spinal stenosis pain. Thank you for explaining the neck exercises. I will try these exercises.

Hi Paulette, We’re very sorry to hear about the pain, and the abuse you've faced over the years, and we want to commend you for seeking ways to address your spinal stenosis. It's clear that you've been through a lot, and it's essential to explore methods that can bring you relief and improve your quality of life. Your acknowledgment of the potential contributing factors, including past experiences, is insightful. Trauma and physical injuries can have a lasting impact on our bodies, and understanding these factors can be a crucial step toward finding effective solutions. We encourage you to take it slow and listen to your body while trying the exercises. If you experience any discomfort please rest and return to the exercise with less intensity. We’d like to share a cervical stenosis playlist with you that you might find helpful. If you are interested you can access it here: “Cervical (Neck) Stenosis Help” ru-vid.com/group/PLJVIPiFvv1mbB6MFKdws1vpjbW_jyXB5y Thank you for sharing your experiences, and we sincerely wish you the best on yourjourney toward improved health and well-being.

I have done Robinson Smith in C7-C8 and C8-TH1. Before i had pain betwen my shoulderblades for som years. I thought it was somthing with the muscels. It is no 12. weeks since the operation. It was what we say in norwegian " alvorlig nakkeprolaps " . I did some hard work on my farm friday. The operation was the following tuesday and i did not sleep until wednesday because of the pain. So 4 nights with out sleep. My right arm are week in many muscels and my fingers are num and not function as they should. Before this friday i had no pain in my neck, only betwen my shoulderblades. So to avoid damage to your nerves out to your arm, take the pain there serious and get it controlled by a doctor! Malvin Opheim

Great explanation, I came to the same solution after my investigation. I was searching what to do to awoid surgery. I was diagnosed 1 year ago with the neck cervical stenosis and since more than 6 months I`m hanging on similar bars you show. Still long path in front of me, but today I can hang my full body for 1,5 min in 1 session (dead hang). Unfortunatelly the shoulder pain and the numb feeling on my hand are still present. I also suffer by a tinnitus in both ears which started along with my disc bulge. I have to say that at least the mobility of my shoulders and neck is for me unblocked. (The pain is constant without any relief, but at least it is not getting worse.)

I do exercises for the rest of my spine that definitely helps but haven’t found anything to help with neck. I’m excited to do yours and just subscribed. This started in ONE day when I was 52. Dear Dr. David , I have: 1) TMJ arthritis right side 2) Degenerative caused recessus and neuroforaminal stenosis C4/5 and C5/6 bds, right more than left in the presence of the degenerative changes of the intervertebral discs accompanied by retrospondylosis and facet joint arthrosis with evidence of activated component as well as compression of the neural structures-C4-C6 nerve root right as a conceivable cause for at least part of the symptomatology - cervicobrachialgia bds. and vertigo. 3) Signs of mild positional and motion-dependent coronary instability of the upper cervical joints with discrete malposition in the right atlantoaxial joint, possibly with position-dependent malrotation most likely due to insufficiency of the right talar ligament. In addition, there is evidence of a most likely constriction of the epidural space and evidence of a short-term affection of the medulla oblongata with accompanying cervico-encephalic syndrome and effect on the vertebral artery and vagus nerve What do you recommend please ? Thanks !

I had someone drop their whole body weight on the back of my neck about 6 years ago. X-ray, MRI, and CT scans show that I have mild to moderate spondylosis of the C6/C7 vertebrae with some foramen narrowing which was probably the result of that injury. Ever so often nowadays I still get pins and needles in my left index and middle fingers and odd twinges in the left shoulder blade as well as crepitus when turn my neck. I discovered doing shoulder presses and full-range chin-ups really helps as well as bridging with the neck off a bench or chair. What are your thoughts on doing weights and gym exercises to relieve Cervical Stenosis?

@epmanualphysicaltherapy

Hey @lw7654, the main idea is to use your muscles on the front of your neck but behind the throat. Those are the deep neck flexors. They're the same muscles you use when making a double chin. You've got to make sure you get those working properly without looking up or down too much.

@epmanualphysicaltherapy Год назад
Hey Eunice, that's great that your pain has been gone for 6 months! It could be that you rested it enough to reduce the irritation that was the source of the pain. If you didn't treat the muscle imbalance, then you should consider doing the exercises to address the weaknesses now because the pain usually comes back.

I do an exercise that I lean on a wall with my feet a foot or 2 out and make sure my rear and lower back are pressed into wall and raise arms up like a snow angel and go up as much as I can and hold for 10 secs and come down and repeat. Arm touch the wall the whole time. Is that about the same?

Hey Denise, that exercise can be helpful if you fully shrug your shoulders and used the upper trapezius muscles that connect your neck and shoulders. They're the shrugging muscles. Getting those muscles working is key to helping neck stenosis.
