We spend 10 grand on a bike I spent about 2 grand on my riding gear I’m alive today because of that gear . Neck brace knee braces klim helmet elbow guards just remember one think if you walk away from a bad crash the money you spend will be worth it ps you can always make more money your worth it .ride on
An absolute amazing hobby. I’m 26 and started riding when I was 3 I always thank my dad for getting me into it because I still absolutely love it to this day. As time goes on I spend more time protecting myself/my bike. It’s expensive over the long run but do what I did! get a new piece of gear once a month and a year later you’ll have a phenomenal setup for yourself. My friends make fun of me for my $800 knee braces and how long it takes me to gear up but everytime I crash I thank god for the stuff that I got
@@DirtNastyy I bet the more gear you got on the safer you feel while riding right? I'm a beginner and have had just a few rides on my neighbour's bike so far. I haven't yet worn any protective gear apart from helmet, however simply going from shorts and t-shirt to long pants and a long-sleeved shirt made me feel considerately more secure. And also when I go from trainers to leather hiking shoes makes me feel much safer, the difference between those two shoes was huge, I could just feel how much more I'd hurt myself from the trainers vs leather hiking shoes. I can only imagine how secure I'd feel with all this gear. Anyway I have just collected most of the basic protection including riding boots, knee guards, vest and kidney belt, but haven't used them yet as I have to get my recently-purchased second-hand bike running, 1997 KTM EXC.
Go ahead my friends dad turns 60 this year and has a annual snow bike/dirtbike trip and lives in the UP of Michigan so rides year round as well. Rides better than most of us lol.
I’m glad you put this video out. When talking to friends who are interested in getting into the sport, I always point them to gear before bikes. Understanding what you need and the cost of safe riding is just as important as bike selection.
i used to ride in just a helmet and non motorcycle jacket + jeans but after i broke my leg doing wheelies i now cover the rear brake and thats all the protection i need
I'm glad I ran across this video, I thought I wanted another dirt bike, it's been like 30 yrs since I had one. Back then, I was 20 & bullet proof,... not so much @ 50, and even tho it would certainly be logical, especially at my age, dropping 4K on pads / helmet for an occasional weekend rip ain't happening for me. Cheers.
I always wear Carhartt work pants and a sweat shkrt when riding. I bought a pair of riding pants but they're so uncomfortable I barely wear them. Helmet and boots are definitely the most important. I always carry a backpack with water and most tools I need to fix my bike. The best advice is to try not to crash so you don't need the gear!
I just bought o'neal element riding boots, o'neal Jersey and pants, 100 % goggles, a nice bilt helmet, and fox chest plate for around $460 at cycle gear. You dont have to spend 5000 dollars on gear. It may help but it's not completely necessary. Great video man, keep up the great work!
Another great video Kyle. I just started riding with legit riding boots instead of the old work boots i was using for some mild dual sport and I already feel much more comfortable and confident that I am protected.
They're the first protective gear to buy after a helmet for sure. Then knees. I ride pretty rough stuff. So, I rock full upper armor. It allows me to try things normally wouldn't.
Never ride without proper expensive boots… I learnt the hard way with cheap 100$ O’Neil boots. Broke 2 bones In my foot due to the poor quality of the boots
There are ways to economize. Expensive helmets are a luxury. You can be safe and comfortable enough with a $200 helmet (or less, but cheaper can fall apart fast.) It's best not to go too cheap on boots, but even bad, Fly Maveriks or O'Neal Elements beat hiking boots. $200 or $300 are much better, or it might be best value to get Sidi Crossfires, Alpinestars Tech 10s, or Gaerne SG10/12, if you ride a lot, as cheaper usually doesn't last (more now than ever, cheaper stuff that used to be OK from Italy is now from China and just falls apart.) I got excellent used SG10s for $125, older but better than anything new at twice the price. Before those I wore new old stock Thor Quadrant boots, very stiff, hard to shift and brake, but between my bike frame and a rock, they held up (but may have worn quicker with use, and no way to get replacement straps/buckles if they snap.) I have a cheap Chinese armored "jacket" (like a fishnet shirt with plastic pads on it) won't beat his $400 Leatt Fusion vest, but it was about $22 (they're over $30 now) and I have tested it more than I'd prefer, built-in chest, back, elbow, and shoulder pads. Also ended up with some football padded compression shorts, they're awesome, thigh, hip, and tailbone pads. Got used MX pants and jerseys (but wish for pants with pockets.) I got closeout Scott OTG goggles and Mechanix gloves from eBay (lots of my used stuff came from eBay, like MX pants and shirts sold in the regular clothing section for lower prices.) With my $1000 DR350, I couldn't justify spending more, and I feel plenty safe.
Kyle, great work again! However, you forgot what I think is maybe the #1 most important item to start with. Support underwear! Protect the Kiwis, the Jewels! I started riding with this brand 10 years ago and just reached out to them this week and as a rookie youtuber they became my first product deal by accident. I would have promoted them anyway or at least promoted the pouch support design in general. I don't understand how every rider (maybe not the ladies...) does not start with this. Try them, you will not be disappointed.
I always buy gear on sale after you combine all gear on sale you get something virtualy for free lets say you buy boots, helmet, knee protectirs, body armor it cost 1000$ and then discounted cost 800$ you can add pants and shirt in combination of 1000$
@@noirxplorer3185 I wear that every day. Took a good fall few times and every time I was so thankful I had it. You always seem to go right on the elbow
More and more I see so many people riding with huge backpacks with just lugs of stuff sagging downward. This puts so much strain on your riding skills. I found that you can get the essentials into a small USAC backpack system and you don't even know it's back there. Also, try some forearm bands, they protect your arms from tree limbs and also help to keep you from getting arm pump and also keep your arm muscles nice and snug, not jolting around.
For me my minimum is slightly different I’m from New Zealand so prices are very different as well This is what I currently will not ride without, and after I will put mine from a few weeks ago Now: helmet (shoei VFX-WR) -on sale for $649, usually $1049 Goggles (leatt velocity 6.5)- 169 Fox comp boots- $300 Gloves- currently FIST- $50 Knee pads- $60 Armour- fox titan sport jacket $270 Jersey& pants- $175 Mobius X8 wrist brace- $339 Total - about $2000NZD Soon I want to get knee braces(450) and new boots, probably another 400 Before a couple weeks ago it was the same but a fox v2 helmet- $350 Leatt 4.5 goggles- $65 And no wrist brace Taking the total closer to 1500 or so
Nice video, I’ve been wearing Klim for 10+ years snowmobiling and dirtbiking since they started making moto gear, it’s pricey but very good quality, but you get what you pay for!
In my honest opinion when you’re starting out all you need is helmet , goggles , gloves , Dirtbike boots , kneepads and after a while you can get a chest protector, knee braces and actual riding gear but at first just run Blue jeans and a long sleeve shirt if you were on a budget you can also get alpinestar tech 3 boots I feel like they’re really good for the money
Roost deflector is a must.. and knee GUARDS at a minimum. Both are super cheap. Roost deflector has saved me a few times from rocks/branches and a couple falls backwards
Seems like a good video. But rather fast paced, light on explanation and heavy on lingo for a beginner. For anyone reading this RevZilla has a more beginner centric video on what to wear and why. Which is more my speed. But the base layer suggestion was nice. It was a game changer once I got a proper base layer for snowboarding.
One piece of gear I won't ride without anymore is full length water-proof socks(Randy Sun, Seal Skin etc.), especially in the cold\cool months here in New England. We always have standing water and mud, after a full days ride suffering completely frozen feet... never again.
Don’t let the price of his personal safety gear denture you guys... I know you can get fully padded with the same about of protection for $1000, maybe even less, by shopping smart. His gear mite be able to be easier to perform in and last a little longer, but not by much. I have the best gear like him and have a lot tied up in it but at one point in time I couldn’t afford the nicest stuff and I know it kept me just as safe... maybe like 2% less safe and it was a tiny bit harder to ride in but not by much lol
Thank you for doing this public service video. Everyone wants to get out and ride. But if you want to ride longer, you do need good gear. My best friend rode Mx growing up and after suffering concussion made the wise decision to by an expensive helmet. When I decided to start riding as a 38 year old that was one thing I knew I was going to spend big money on. I made the hard decision not to ride until I had the basic gear setup. I will add more as time goes on. I get so frustrated with the people saying that a $75 helmet with a sticker is as good as a $600-$700 helmet. You only have one brain and it can’t be repaired, so use it!
Great video Kyle! I think you pretty well covered the vital gear and the importance of the basics. Ironically, I wear almost the exact same gear, even have the same color scheme on the fly formula. It's like that gear Works!
I've always worn KLIM but the prices are outrageous for something made in Vietnam. Perhaps this year will inspire them to either drop prices or make a more economic version of their existing lines. I believe Fox and others are starting to creep in on Klims dominance..Their road gear is priced off the charts (IMO). This year people will be looking for alternatives. Your thoughts?
Great list Kyle. I would suggest to add elbow pads to your “must have” list. I wear elbow and knee pads/protectors from Leatt. They have a number of different options depending on the level of protection that you want. After the first time that you go down in rocks on your knees or elbows, you will never go without these again!
Def cant do elbow pads nobody I know wears elbow pads to ride in they restrict too much movement I race harescrambles as well and have never seen anybody wearing elbow pads
@@singletrackmarc819 that's not entirely true. I was hesitant when i got mine for the same reason and after riding with them i didn't feel restricted but appreciated having them when i went down in a corner. I know some of this is preference but i wouldn't say nobody wears them, albiet not many.
I wear varying degrees of all that gear, minus the knee braces. One other tip someone gave me was to wear bike shorts (with the chamois pad) under the riding pants. Super nice on long rides.
You just gotta shop around. You can definitely cut the cost down big time by buying more affordable gear. A lot of the high end gear isn’t actually safer it’s just lighter, has more function, more options and devices added on and higher end materials. Realistically you can outfit yourself completely for $600 by buying closeouts and previous years gear and that’s with a chest protector and knee pads. Also look around for “used” gear because a lot of people shop more than they actually ride and have brand new gear sitting inside the factory packaging in their basement.
Hi Kyle. Ignore my name here as it's only temporary haha. I wanted to ask you if you are able to ship gear/parts worldwide as I leave in Eastern Europe. Your knowledge and everything you shared about dirtbiking earned my subscription and I really do appreciate what you're doing for us. I learned some things about dirtbikes that I would never thought of learning and I honestly appreciate and be forever thankful. Keep doing a great job. Much respect.
I raced mountain bikes for years with just spandex and a super light helmet. I can see how the boots would be good for moto. The riding I do is actually slower than when I was riding mountain bikes. Maybe I’m just super cautious because I have this giant motor between my legs.
Everide says it well in his video about boots. When you're sliding down a rocky hill with the frame of your bike hammering along on top of your ankle, you really learn why MX/enduro boots really matter. And good ones better than the cheapies, which don't protect half as well. Not mandatory for "trail riders," but once you get beyond gravel roads and mild trails, you can really get hurt without the right gear. And I know mountain bikers with pins holding their bones together, not free of injuries. I'll bet it prepared you to better avoid crashes, making you a safer rider even at speed.
Some people/riders might think wearing wicking base-layers in the heat and humidity as odd or just plain dumb. I swear you can feel the difference when your sweat doesn’t evaporate as quickly with wicking base-layers (at speed). You just feel warmer without them or with cotton/blends.
Goggles for sure! When I was 16, I was haulin down a paved hill on my TTR-125 and had the biggest june bug splat right in between my eyes. It looked like someone shot me directly in the center of the goggles with an green/orange paintball. That would've hurt really bad! I rarely used goggles back then too.
I cannot believe the number of people I see on the interstate highways without googles. A tiny rock would put your eye out at those speeds. I have hit grasshopper at 30mph, and it leaves a mark and hurts.
Purchasing 2021 te250i as my first bike. Just wanted to say thank you for all your info on those bikes and all the gear. Keep the videos coming man. Great job on all videos 👍🤘
A guy on FB committed to a person that was complaining about the high cost of riding gear and said “ It’s a lot cheaper than the blue gown you may end up wearing at the hospital!
I've done that for years, until I wrecked going 50 and fractured my rib. Not fun one bit, a few hundred bucks of gear could've saved me alot more on medical bills. But haul ass and have fun👍.
I've found about $4500 as being my # so far, but I'm also carting a turtle airbag vest for long street rides and rare but sketchy, rocky cliff single track (for adv stuff).
Man I wish I lived in the States. I would love to have a shot at winning any one of those bikes! Thanks for the over view. Makes me feel less bad about the 1800 bucks (Canadian) I spent on my riding gear.
What a tease knowing we're up here with next to no covid 19 and we can travel freely. Or the fact that we can spend a month in the hospital for free thanks to ohip.
mike mulnix a buddies brother pulled his bike out of the garage and just did a quick ride around the apartment complex. In a low speed turn around he hit is front tire on the curb and it launched him over the bars. He hit head first on a brick light pole. It ended up killing him. Agree, protection shouldn’t be taken lightly.
I used to ride with no gear but then I broke my neck in my driveway and became a quadriplegic and now I don’t ride without gear because I can’t ride asshole I’m a quadriplegic!
@@TheHighlands111 those DonJoys don't look very protective tbh. I'm sure they'll do a good job to protect the knee from stretching in ways it shouldn't but pretty much every other manufacturer now has braces that fully cover the knee and it's surroundings from impact. That was even one of the major improvements in the Pod k8/k4 2.0, additional coverage. Surely at $2000 they can offer better impact protection than $50 knee guards
You can buy a pretty good pair of mid level boots and helmet for $150-200 each, unless your a competitive racer that high end stuff is a waste of money. I agree that knee pads, chest protector and neck brace should definitely be in your ensemble.
Go to cycle gear. Then go to the dirt section abd pic what your looking for (boots Jersey pants etc) then short by price low to high. And the pants i where right now whete like $175 or so for like $36 and then a Jersey for something like 15 that was 45. Over all thoes 2 cost me about $50. And you can use that for whatever you need
O bought what I could afford at the time . I always looked for the on sale items and bout the best helmet I could afford and a decent pair of boot and when they worn out I upgraded to better . All the other stuff just makes you safer buy and upgrade when you can
You only really need helmet, gloves, goggles, boots. I rode with jeans and longsleeves and I felt fine. I even had a low side crash and the jeans helped protect me. I got O’Neal for everything and some basic goggles and gloves. Maybe have $350 in everything.
Minimally important, IMO. Helmet, boots, goggles are the most important. If you have knee issues, or are worried about your knees, then knee braces are next. Roost guard is probably next, though most people don't pick ones with shoulder protectors.
If you don't wear knee braces (I don't) at least wear some kind of knee guard. You can get cheap ones for 30-40 bucks. It will save your knees and also protects your tib/fib a lot more than you would think.
I like Fox, but it can be pricey. I save some cash just buying Fox mountain bike gloves and jerseys works just the same and most of the time its cheaper then their stuff they label as “moto”gear.
my helmet is from thor it’s 109 dollars and my chest protector is 70 my gear is around 200 in total and the boots are 200 as well also the gloves are 20 bucks and goggles are 40
I would reccomend buying all the best stuff you can afford and the biggest mistake i see is people buying a knee brace AFTER they hurt their knee! Better off to get it before and possibly never hurt it! I lost my dad 2 years ago out in the forrest in a dirtbike accident,he was old school and just wore the bare essentials.A better chest protector and neck brace could have saved his life =(
actually none of the gear is absolutely needed if you really dont want haha but it makes the ride alot more enjoyable for sure haha but you can ride in a t shirt and sneakers if you really wanted not even work boots haha
@@kevinnicholas1 i dont really use my dirtbike in the dirt i street ride the dirtbike all i put on is chest protector, goggles, af1, a normal shirt and normal pants
I notice loads of guys do not wear chest protection, I would say a chest protector, boots, gloves, helmet and goggles, I will not ride without my chest protector..
