Steve and Glenn at Hypersports collaborated to create a powerful and reliable 3-cylinder turbocharged Yamaha engine for Steve's Highlander XL airplane. In this video, Steve shares the modifications he made to the stock Yamaha 998t and the race-built Hypersports engine.

I remember when Yamaha put out the first 4 stroke snow machine engine back in 2003/4? The sled was an overweight turd, especially if you were at altitude/hill climbing. Then, someone put a turbo on it and the rest is history. Happy to see them in aviation

I learn so much every time Steve talks. I’m not a pilot but if I were, Steve would be building me a XL. The more I hear about the design, motor and console the more I want to learn. Thanks guys for the videos!

This as well as all videos created by Steve and his daughter are in keeping with the tradition of an incredible vast knowledge of mechanics starting in his youth and continuing on into the passion of aviation. His willingness to share this to those of us just starting in the sport of STOL aviation is testimony to the infectious enthusiasm that permeates all of his videos. While I will never likely be using the horsepower that he is able to harness, its nonetheless comforting to know that the structural parameters and durability of the platform he is using his exactly the one I own. If it can take the stress and strain in his different variations you can rest assured that the limitations that aircraft provides are far greater than what I am capable of imparting on it. Again Bravo on this and many other educational videos..... Keep them coming !.

Hey Steve - been watching you for a while. I watch another channel called Cleetus McFarland and he's gotten into aviation - specifically STOL with his Carbon Cub, and I think it would be magical if the two of you could link up. I know he would definitely enjoy seeing your skill in action and hearing your vast knowledge of STOL. I also think it would do a massive service to STOL to be exposed to his broad fan base who instantly gravitated to it. I'm just a 40yr old dad vicariously living through the two of you, but I have a feeling you guys would go together like peanut-butter and jelly.

Although I don't ring out my engine like you do racing I anticipate I won't run into water pump issues. Keep kicking it and thankx for all the yamaha engine development! I'm building a custom engine right now myself, nothing this crazy though. I'm building it to be able to handle 11k rpm and plan to run it no more than 6300. Same story though, finding the toughest possible internals and hoping for some reliability 😁

Hey Steve, do you have weighed the engine in airplane configuration and stock form? Just trying to understand differences to something that makes similar horsepower to a low horsepower version of this, around the 270-300hp range, such as an O-540 or IO-540 or similar.

I know Teal has a Yamaha engine in his RV and appears to be having great success with it. You guys should get together and design a FWF for the RV’s. With the price and waiting times for a Lycoming, think there’s a huge untapped market there.

since i was i child, i have dreamed of building my own airplane. recently i have been imagining a slow toroidal split level counter rotating multi blade design powered by a small turbo engine. maybe even active noise cancellation via multiple small speakers around the prop shrouds. i want to be as quiet as a hot air balloon floating by.
@tomcoryell
@tomcoryell 11 месяцев назад
I think part of your success is your own personal power to weight ratio. If the pilot is light, the plane doesn’t need as much power to overcome gravity.

Steve can we have a constant speed prop on the Factory spec 275HP turbo yamaha? I want to have an Amphib plane with some punch for getting off the water. I live in BC and we have allot of smaller high elevation lakes. 180hp doesn't cut it all the time. and more than that and you are getting heavy.
@SteveHenry

Yes, you can put an air master electric constant speed on it if you want to.

Supercool Steve!, which ECU? Motec or AEM? Using 2 electric water pumps helps to increase the max continuos power? Or still running on the 160+ hp? Yamaha have to hire you and Teal's to become development heads for the incoming aircraft emgines!

I wonder how this compares to a LS3 engine which make 426 Hp which is a stock engine with no modification, and weight is 410 lbs. You can get a LS3 engines for around 5 K. There must be other reasons that makes Yamaha a better engine. Is it more relievable or lighter?

The Yamaha engine has become the new rage, & a lot of sleds are now being destroyed, simply in order to get their engines. 2 strokes are simply getting to expensive to run, especially when a gallon of good quality 2 stroke oil is up to $50 or more!
