What aperture should I use? 3 tips how to select the best aperture
In this video I'm sharing three tips on how to select the best aperture.
My name is Matti Sulanto, I'm a photographer and a Lumix ambassador based in Helsinki Finland. I'll publish a new video twice a week.
I make my content using Panasonic Lumix cameras and lenses. Some of the equipment I use is my own and some is on loan from Panasonic.

I took my camera - Lumix Fz2500 - down to a spot on the Sacramento River - put it on the tripod and composed a shot. Then I selected the ' Art ' mode & took the same shot - each time changing to the next filter, until I had tried them all. This way I was, afterword, able to see which affect I liked & which I didn't. As you say, " Know your gear." By becoming familiarized with my camera it has opened up my choices for a shot as well as cut down on the time spent. In the near future I plan on getting the Panasonic G9. I feel with what I've learned on the Fz , that this will lessen my time needed to get to understand the G9. Thanks for this video.

This was very important for me. Until recently, I had been working hard to shoot as much as possible at f1.8 to get that wonderful bokeh. Of course, this made my life miserable because things that should be in focus were not. So, I tried harder, and kept getting disappointed. I started figuring things out, and got confirmation that I shouldn’t always shoot wide open. NOW, you have provided some specific advice. THANK YOU!

The tip about stopping down a bit is well worth remembering. I got an old Konica Hexanon 1.7 a few years back and, obsessed with bokey, shot it wide open for a few days and dismissed it as unremarkable. Last week I took it out, stopped it down *one stop* and the lens is amazing!

Thank you Matti -- "f8 And Be There" -- old photojournalism quote. I guess for MFT it should be "f4 And Need No More." Have you heard of CameraRescue? Located in Tampere Finland? I saw a RU-vid video from Mathieu Stern where he toured this place -- amazing collection of vintage cameras and lenses -- and they repair the ones that they can, and sell their surplus. And they even have modern cameras (like Micro-Four Thirds). Another reason for me to travel to Finland!!!

thankyou this was great! would canons apsc sensors be considered about the same? My fav lens is a 22mm 2.0 and I want to shoot myself like in my video 10 Things You Need To Know BEFORE Buying A Snake but whenever I try to with a snake the focus fights between my face and the animal. would I be better off manual focusing and setting the aperture at 5.6 or would setting the aperture to a fixed 5.6 the auto focus will still keep everything in focus? What do you think is my best bet to be able to look clear along with a moving snake. Thanks! if your ever in Toronto you can come shoot some snakes!
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto Год назад
Thanks. Canon would be the same. I'm not that familiar with Canon AF settings, but I suggest you try different settings and see what works. Be sure to make some notes so you know which setting you used in which clip. Thanks for the offer😀

I think people who are new to portrait photography don't consider how close they are to the subject and how it changes from full length to head shot. I too start at f/4 with head shots but usually start at f/2 shooting full length with my Olympus 45mm lens. Good advice.

What exactly do you mean by "The information I am missing is focal length."?
@vertusmatjaz
@vertusmatjaz Год назад
@@mattisulanto regarding your comment ”background can get too blurred”. So instead of using 1.4 use 2.8. And you showed examples. Then you showed examples and the only information that you mentioned is aperture. I miss the focal length (and distance to the subject).
@vertusmatjaz
@vertusmatjaz Год назад
@@mattisulanto want to correct myself. You wrote aperture value and sensor size. Still, I am missing focal length and distance to the subject.
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto Год назад
@@vertusmatjaz I don't think it really matters, because this is just an example of how aperture or DOF works. In real life there are so many different situations, so many subject distances, so many focal lengths. I.E. so many variables. Experiment a little and find out what happens with your lenses.

Hello Matti, thanks this video was very helpful for me - a budding youtuber. I noticed on my 1st video shot with a G9 (with firmware 2.0 installed) that the face detect AF was having trouble staying locked on to my face when I was stopped down to f/1.7 on the DG Leica 15mm coupled with a variable ND to prevent over exposure; I was practicing ETTR as well. I do vlog style 'walk and talk' shots and afterwards it became clear that f/1.7 has too shallow a DOF for this - too much bokeh can be a bad thing, haha. But I was curious if you think that the reason the AF would not stay locked on was because of too shallow a depth of field?
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 4 года назад
Thanks! It's hard to say why the AF wouldn't stay on your face without knowing all the other circumstances. I still have to make some real tests with the 2.0 firmware, but my initial tests suggest that use the continuous video AF MODE2 and give the focus a few seconds to grab before the action.

You do not talk about APSC systems :))
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 4 года назад
Yes, I don't use APS-C and kind of forgot that😀 However, it's easy and falls in between MFT and FF.
@wanneske1969
@wanneske1969 4 года назад
F2 on 30 mm gives more dof than f2 on 100 or 200 mm. Depth of field does not only depend on the f-number, but also on the focal lenght of the lens and the distance to the subject
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 4 года назад
I took surprisingly long for this this comment and thanks for bringing this up. First, if you watched the video, you noticed I said many times, that these are rules of thumb and there are exception. Second, if you take a photo on both 30mm and 200mm lenses so that the subject is about the same size, you'll see that also the DOF is about the same at the same aperture. So, my advice works pretty well, as a rule of thumb, for someone who doesn't really know where to start. I also encouraged people to experiment and find out what their lens can do.
@joakimtollerud2172
@joakimtollerud2172 4 года назад
Ok, so if I want to take o photo of, lets say a playground, I need to go to F5.6 or F8 to get everything in focus? Does this rule also apply to video when using autofocus?
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 4 года назад
Thanks for your comment. Let me first point out that these were not rules, but more like guidelines. It depends on how far from the playground you are and what kind of camera and lens you are using. Why don't you try and see what happens? If no playground nearby, pick a similar sized subject and make a test.
