The 4.5X20 inch big blue using a string wound filter cartridge does a PHENOMINAL job of stripping out all of the ferric iron (brown rusty water at the tap) from my well water. And because its so large, it goes for months and months before needing replacement. I thought I was going to need to spend thousands on an iron filter, but all I needed was one of these big blues and the right filter inside of it.
Useful information - thanks! Your comments about material fatigue makes me think that the best solution is a stainless steel filter housing. Expensive at first, but cheaper in the long run.
Thanks for the overview, especially how so many brands are under this one! I think water hammer arrestors would solve that problem, and they're not expensive.
What micron rating should be used for the prefilter particulate filter and also what micron rating should be used for the carbon filter on a well type system?
Childrens toy of a housing the big blue that's why you see numerous times the filter waddles around and you have to hold it 100% straight so it doesn't sit on an angle when you begin tightening it, All they needed to do is make a integrated plastic round bush in the centre of the top housing so it centres the filter as you're tightening it
That happened to me when the plumber first installed my filter. The O-ring pinched so that there was an internal leak and nothing really got filtered... once I figured that out, we were good to go.
thanks, what would be the best filter to use for well water in florida ? gonna put it before the iron/sulphur and softener tanks, looking to remove sediment and protect the tanks .
Maybe someone could answer this question: can I put a 20” housing on a 4.5” filter that previously used a 10” housing? It seems to me if it’s the same width, it could also take a 20”
This answers the first question yet not really the 2nd question of "How Do They Work?" A graphic showing water flow and internals and such would better do such.
Just tell me how to keep the replacement filter straight in the housing so it aligns with the black interior filter socket at the top of the receiver. I cannot get the housing close enough tot he receiving end to rethread the housing because the filter flops around inside the housing
I have one 10” big blue 1”NPT. Not enough for our well. Ready to install two 20” big blues (1 with 30 micron pleated cartridge, and 1 spun 25 micron outer/1 micron inner) I will keep the 10” big blue for a carbon filter. I have a water softener. Do you recommend the system to be installed before or after the water softener? Thanks much!
Softeners can have small orifices so you probably want a sediment filter prior to the softener to prevent particulate matter from going through the softener
That depends on your plumbing. I just installed two of these filter housings on my well system and got the 1" version because that's what's coming out of my well pump and it's what's going to my house.
Paul. Big Blue 4.5X20 using a 5 micron string wound cartridge. I have the same kind of water (ferric iron) and this arrangement works incredibly well. Crystal clear water coming out the other side of this filter!
Using an auto-flush 50 micron spin down into this big boi. It's a world of difference. The only thing I wish I'd done is add in a UV filter because as much as the sediment catcher gets followed by this filter, it doesn't really catch bacteria or viruses very well. Not so much a health concern, more as an Algae thing.
