I started a Buy Nothing group! There wasn't one for our city, but there were ones for all the surrounding cities, so I started one. It's been going strong for over a year. I love it!

Now gift economy is SO powerful! In my area people leave their unwanted stuff on the curb / at apartment hallway for others to take for free. We also have buy nothing groups. Also, recruiting our friends who are like-minded to trade is so good! And even if they aren't as passionate about waste reduction, we will all save money and creates a sense of sharing and like you say, build community 💕 This is an incredible, powerful concept!

There's a buy nothing group where I live and I love it. I got several giant boxes of crinkle paper, which I use regularly in bird toys, saved me a ton of money. Another time someone asked for a tank to house a hermit crab and I gave her a 10 gallon tank I had lying around. Buy nothing groups are such a great resource. It almost feels like GoodWill, but cutting out the expensive middle man.

I just used my BN group for the first time this week! I have family and my toddler nephew coming to stay with me and i needed some baby proofing stuff. Someone offered me a bunch and I picked them up the next day. Super easy and free!

As the sole admin of a fairly small group, there are days these groups are definitely *work*. People should be realistic about how much bandwidth they have.

I'm decluttering and trying to do it as responsibly as possible. My local Buy Nothing group has been amazing for this. People have taken my used candles, nail polish I've opened but only used a few times, an open bag of fiber fill for crafting, used paint supplies, things that the thrift store probably wouldn't accept but still have a lot of life left. It's been so good. Plus, it's a low effort way for me to get rid of some things I'm not using.

I agree that Buy Nothing is especially great for things that may not be usable by a thift store. Haircare products someone tried once or twice are big in my local group, for instance.

My community has a biannual garage sale and instead of putting things out for sale, I put items out for free. Works really great to get rid of a lot of stuff at once! You’d be surprised what people take!

Yay Buy Nothing groups! We've gotten a desk, an entertainment center, and about a year's worth of firewood (a storm downed some trees nearby) among other things over the years. It was a win win- we got some firewood and they got a heavy log out of their yard.

I will be moving soon and this is very helpful! I just looked up No Buy' for my city and found a bunch of groups! I can maybe give away some stuff I don't want to take with me. And the fact that you said I could ask these groups for moving boxes: EXCELLENT!

Buy nothing groups are so much better than just donating to a thrift store and hoping it all works out. The one in my city encourages members to take it slow and let things sit for a while, to make it more accessible for everyone, and to foster more intentionally gifting. I really love that. Ours is also a more hyper local group too, in order to build a sense of community and support amongst neighbors. I’ve also seen and been a part of “Freecycle” groups. So maybe try searching for that, if there are no buy nothing groups in your area.

I LOVE my buy nothing group! I hit the jackpot and got a brand new dishwasher (the person had just purchased a house and wanted new appliances… not sure why but I scored!!). I also get rid of SO many things in the group-even things that I wouldn’t think other people would want. Love the video!

I don't buy plants anymore because I can get them for free from my buy nothing group. I got a beautiful fiddle leaf fig the other day and I get propagates all the time! It's such an amazing resource!

I have hosted a "gift together" with my group. I invited people to my apartment common area and everyone brought stuff that they haven't got around to posting or maybe it didn't get pucked up or something. It was super fun😊

Not quite a buy nothing group: I had to buy a 6 food step ladder this week to change the batteries in smoke/CO2 detectors & bulbs in recessed lighting (the frigging alarm was beeping a piecing alarm every minute. . Now I’m in the process of contacting my neighbors who have same condo layout that (I feel comfortable briefly loaning out my ladder to) so they don’t have to buy their own ladder to use once a year to change batteries. PS: our tool lending branch of library didn’t have a 6’ step ladder… making a suggestion to them PPS: years ago we had a FreeCycle group that was an email listserve in the days before Facebook. I think it’s the same thing.
