"In 1978, more than 900 people committed mass suicide at the order of their leader, the Reverend Jim Jones". Sorry, but this is wrong - and insultingly so. Jonestown was a mass murder-suicide. Many did willingly commit suicide but others refused and were murdered. Additionally, many of the dead were children and you cannot argue that a child could willingly make a decision to suicide because their leader told them to. I don't think what I am pointing out here is a trivial distinction. Journalists should really double-check their statements instead of just regurgitating what is commonly believed to be true.
Exactly. It is a common belief and most documentaries say the exact same thing. The phrase drinking the Kool aid was coined after this with the belief that people blindly followed along. However if people are standing there with guns, you don't have much of a choice. I think all those people were murdered.
No, it's not! I'm a proud Muslim, and I know my religion very well! Your problem is that you -- like million other guys--- didn't study any real thing about Islam, it's pillars, it's sciences, history, etc... But who cares if you become a renegade? We don't need ignorant, psycopaths among us! By the way, some devilish guys try to make cults/ secret groups inside the Islamic societie here or there, but this is not Islam, and they are non-Muslims, on the contrary, they are groups of traitors employed by the infidles to infiltrate and destroy the Islamic societies around the globe...
That's actually my mum, and it's really horrible what she went through. She has PTSD and more, and it's hard for her to deal with sometimes. I just wanted to let people know that people you see on the internet have families too, like my mum here. Sorry if I worded this weird.
A cult is a smaller sect, which is a smaller religion. It's just the number of adherents, christianity was a cult and then a series of cults before it eventually became a codified religion.
I don't know who decides what 'religions' get that label rather than being called cults; It appears to depend on how long they have been established (and accepted as 'a real religion' by the state and its tax collectors: many are exempt from taxes, I read) and how many believers/followers they have and nothing at all to do with what they actually say they believe in. To me all religions are dangerous and followers hold wacky bizarre beliefs, do very strange things and worship idols/statues/logos, and most claim they think there is an invisible person/thing/power up in the sky somewhere which/who they call 'god' and who apparently knows what everyone all around the world is doing and rewards good behaviours with a promise of 'heaven' after death and punishes bad people with everlasting hell and damnation - sometimes with lots of fire and torture - *so much for those who say 'all sins will be forgiven'; they much prefer their own team/tribe and mostly want to change others' minds away from having no religion or from following a different one, a bit like football - their priests wear a special uniform (and sometimes very odd hats) so everyone knows who they are and pays them respect * Sins: I've read and been told that religious leaders (and through them, their god/s) will forgive all and every sin no matter how terrible if the person ('sinner') admits what they did and asks for forgiveness; some religions may impose a punishment called a penance which may be something simple such as repeating certain holy ditties a few times, a bit like teachers in school used to give kids 'lines' to write out, I don't suppose they do this now? I've read that one or two 'mainstream' religions can and do punish those who make fun of their 'god/s', who burn a modern book (not a valuable ancient copy) and who refuse to believe the nonsense; according to the definition in this video (if I got this right) this is a 'sign' that the supposed religion is in fact a cult. I'm confused. In other words: some cults are mainstream/accepted here and now and are given the official title of Religion and enjoy many benefits which flow from this favouring, whereas others aren't; but the ones that are currently deemed to be Religions only had a few followers at the start and were treated the same as some 'cults' are today; apparently we must wait to see whether the latest cult-fad catches on before states will accept them as 'genuine'; all very silly and very discriminatory and dangerous, states should never be involved with any religion - must always be completely separate, which is not the case here and now in the UK; this must change.
Ok , a person joins a cult for various reasons and that right to choose is a human right . Said it. Now the other bit, you also have that right to leave and should be respected for that choice . But, cults that promote child abuse, sexism , racism and homophobia should be watched more. No one wants another Manson, Koresh , Jones or Berg .
Often it’s much more complex than that, on a neuropsychological level. The choice to join/leave isn’t as cut/dry, simple as you seem to espouse here. It has huge psychological aspects, and if you understand how the limbic system works…that’s a good start to understanding the foundational aspects of cults, from both the leader and the followers.
Abortion under Vaticans Democracy is equivalent to cults sacrificing babies. Occultists receiving deities is equivalent to Christians receiving the holy spirit. Equally they sacrifice babies from Mama's Spirit and Womb. Elections keep her enemies in control of the life that does live , to indoctrinate us too live by their laws and believe in the god that gives them control of creation from her womb. Witch craft creating demon babies while killing Mama's Family.
A religious belief is not a "cult", understanding that a "cult" does not represent something good. A cult is a control factor from another. Your free will is not allowed within that or any "cult".
Yes, the reporter seemed to think that cults were based on new beliefs, but there’s dozens of cults based on the established major religions. They are typically fundamentalist, taking all teaching as absolute and calling any other or symbolic interpretation of their particular form as heretical.
I Regret The Cult Of Lim Chunk Yi, Cha Mook Thong Who Is Now Dead, Cha Chang Hu, Lim Fat Yun, Shiu Wan Zung, Lim Zhang Ping And Lim Yen Li Now And Forever.
Sorry but I'm hijacking your post, Where is my Bolt Cult at? We got a spiritual war to fight and you damn vanished on me 15 years ago, look what's happening right now, it's upon us! We were freaking right! We knew before anyone and we have a dity to fulfill, it's me Snrakd -Truth
A cult is a religion without political power. A religion is a cult with political power. Looking deeper, establishment propaganda addicts are also cultists. Control of information is central to the social consensus as much as to cults.
often start at home, 1 e.g control freak insecure parent , can be unknowingly cult like? blackmail bully is normal, kids used to it and attract bullies in the world etc.? & of course marriages.
This documentary totally doesn't live up to its title. The only reason given for why people join is because they're in a vulnerable place, and even the expert stressed that there was nothing dark about that. Click bait title.
It's easy to define a religion. Definition. Religion is a system of beliefs whose intensity is an increasing function of the amount of evidence against them. This definition includes secular religions, such as national socialism and consumerism. There are many variants of the term religion. Mythology is one of them (an extinct religion). Cult is another (a short-lived religion that becomes extinct thanks to the idiocy of its adherents).
