Dr Patrizia Ghidotti, Departement of Epigenomics and Biomarkers of Solid Tumors, at Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, Milan talks about the focus of her PhD Programme -The Open University
Immunoregulatory role of Extracellular Vesicles in advanced Non Small Cell Lung Cancer
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with a 5-year survival rate of only 20% for non-small cell lung cancer patients. In the last decade, the introduction of immunotherapy has significantly improved the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer.
Immunotherapy restores T-cell activity, and when combined with chemotherapy, further boosts the anti-tumor immune response. Tumor PD-L1 expression is the only biomarker currently used to guide immunotherapy, though even low-expressing patients can respond well.
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are small particles released by cells and play key roles in cancer progression, including angiogenesis, metastasis, and immune regulation. As EVs are found in various bodily fluids, they are considered stable and reliable biomarkers.
In the dr Ghidotti's PhD project, the goal is to investigate extracellular vesicles release in the plasma of advanced non-small cell lung cancer patients to identify new potential biomarkers and explore their immune regulatory functions.
