Hi Sir Caco, a little out of topic, and maybe a suggestion as a new segment or topic for your behind the desk scene, answering fans questions or a behind the desk comparo. I would like to ask for your opinion and suggestion, I live in Baguio city, and pass roads that are steep, narrow and not so nice, and my future garage would be on the narrow side. I would choose a medium SUV anyday if I live in an area where the roads are wider and my garage would be wider, so my choices for now are Ssangyong tivoli and geely coolray. I chose them mainly for their size and power/torque. I will choose a jimny as well, if I was single, but I have a wife and a son, but we will live near my in-laws. Tallest passenger would be around 5'5".I would like to ask for your help to choose between them, thank you.Hoping for your reply.

Kyle Justin fwd is not better traction than rwd when accelerating or off the line. When you accelerate you have weight transfer to the rear giving you more traction. FWD also has the inherent torque steer that occurs for high horsepower cars. There is a reason why high horsepower drag cars are rwd. AWD gives better traction but also at the cost of added weight. 4wd provides the choice of gearing with a high and low range and best used off road.

Torque affects your rate of acceleration. Horsepower will determine your top speed. How fast you get to your top speed depends on your torque (the car with higher torque will speed up faster). Reaching higher speeds depends on your horsepower (accomplishing work - covering the desired distance - with less time).

No. The higher power for the same weight will win. Why not torque? Well the fact is we have no idea how the vehicle will perform if we know only torque. For example, what if the engine turns super slow? Then we'll have to use a very low ratio and we'll have much lower torque at the wheels even though the engine makes a lot of it. Wheel torque is what pushes the vehicle. Now if we know that the product of engine torque and rpm is higher than the other car and we are currently going the same speed, then we know that whatever ratio is being used is giving more torque to the wheels than the other car... and we win uphill or overtaking. The product of torque and rpm is power. That's why it's useful.
