Great to see Dad back in the fold. Nice take on the topic. 1973: Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd - Lynyrd Skynyrd 1983: Piece of Mind - Iron Maiden 1993: Earth vs. the Wildhearts - The Wildhearts 2003: Permission to Land - The Darkness Funny you mentioned debuts, as three of my pix are debuts. And thank god for Skynyrd, or it would've been a clean sweep by the Brits!
My Picks are ..1973 - For Your Pleasure - Roxy Music , 1983 Soul Mining - The The , 1993 A Storm In Heaven - The Verve & 2003 Think Tank - Blur. Excellent segment 👍
Fun video! My picks would be: 1973: King Crimson -Larks' Tongues in Aspic 1973: Selling England 1973: Banco del Mutuo Soccorso - Io Sono Nato Libero 1973: Gentle Giant - In a Glass House 1973: Area - Arbeit Macht Frei 1983: Von Zamla - 1983 / Avant-prog from Sweden. Really quite brilliant, actually. 1983: IQ - Tales From a Lush Attic 1983: Bacamarte - Depois Do Fim / Great prog from Brazil. A sadly underrated recording. 1983: Eskaton - Fiction / Not as good as their otherworldly debut, but still killer. 1993: Anekdoten - Vemod / The debut by this great Swedish prog band. 1993: Lindsay Cooper - Sahara Dust / oboeist and bassoonist from Henry Cow had some amazing releases. 2003: Thinking Plague - A History of Madness / Avant-prog doesn't get any better than this US band. 2003: Steve Coleman and the Five Elements / Killer complex progressive jazz. 2003: Tim Berne's Science Friction - The Sublime And / avant-garde jazz at its best. Sorry to disagree, but 2013 was a KILLER year for music! Here are only a few from 2013: The Wrong Object - After the Exhibition /Zappa influenced jazz-fusion with avant-garde leanings. Setna - Guerison /Zeuhl band from France. Not as dense as Magma, and a bit more overtly jazzy. World class musicianship. Mary Halvorson Sextet - Illusionary Sea / Mary Halvorson is one of the most creative current guitarists. La Maschera Di Cera - Le Porte Del Domani / pure unadulterated Italian prog. A follow up to Le Orme's 1973 classic, Felona e Sorona. Homunculus Res - Limiti All'Eguaglianza Della Parte Con il Tutto / Great Canterbury style prog from this Italian band.
That's quite the question... For me it would be: Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (My favourite Sabbath album and third favourite Metal album) Manilla Road - Crystal Logic (Although Maiden and Dio are close behind) Darkthrone - Under a funeral moon Dream Theater - Train of Thought
Love this kind of videos with your dad, the reason why i'm into albums like Grateful Dead's American Beauty and OMD's Organisation because of he talking with passion about these incredible records, twas at the beginning of the pandemic i guess, keep up de good work, cheers from Canada
Really good topic. My favourites from each year would be: 1973: Mahavishnu Orchestra "Birds of fire" 1983:Metallica "Kill 'em all" 1993:The Smashing Pumpkins "Siamese Dream" 2003: The White Stripes "Elephant"
As I have a list called "preferred album I own on vinyl" for every year since 1973, this is easy for me: 1973 Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon 1983 The Police - Synchronicity 1993 Suede - Suede 2003 Evanescence - Fallen 2013 Haken - The Mountain

Love watching dad and daughter, always learn something new to check out, thank you for expanding my musical horizons, take care and stay safe, hope to see you both soon!!!❤
1973 - Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd // 1983 - Piece of Mind Iron Maiden // 1993 - Pork Soda Primus // 2003 - Damnation Opeth (Train of Thought is my most listened to Dream Theater CD. Great choice!)
Can't go down to only one 1973 1. Genesis - Selling England 2. Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy 3. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon 1983 1. Marillion - Scripts for a Jester's Tear 2. YES - 90125 3. Savatage - Sirens 1993 1. Nick Cave - Live Seeds 2. Bjork - Debut 3. Carcass - Heartwork 2003 1. Riverside - Out of Myself 2. Dream Theater - Train of Thought 3. Enslaved - Below The Lights 2013 1. Spock's Beard - Brief Nocturnes 2. The Ocean - Pelagial 3. Persefone - Spiritual Migration
1). 1973- “Never Turn Your Back on a Friend” by Budgie, 2). 1983 - “Feline” by The Stranglers, 3). 1993 - “Audience with the Mind” by The House of Love, 4). 2003 - “Reason To Believe” by King Crimson.
Rift is my favorite Phish album as well! As an American cat, l was lucky 🍀 enough to get to see them on the Rift tour. It was an outdoor show, at Jones Beach, on Long Island New York. Amazing performance, and if memory serves, they encored with an AC/DC cover. Dream Theater’s Train of Thought is an excellent choice as well. Heavy AF, definitely the nadir of their metal phase. I also prefer their Portnoy period, for the most part. He was an integral piece of the DT puzzle 🧩, and without him, they lost a little bit of their edge to me. I’ve been a fan since their first record, and l will continue to support them. I’ve seen them live dozens of times with LaBrie and even once with Charlie Dominici on lead vocals. I was even in attendance at their infamous Sundance show, where they introduced Steve Stone as their new singer - pre-James LaBrie - only to fire him right after the gig. Cheers from Noo Yawk, ova heyah! Rock Out and Prog On… in each and every lexicon! Your pal and mine, ~ The diabolical 😈 Davey Cretin
Love the Saturdays with Dad feature - great picks from both of you! Some of mine: 1973 Mahavishnu Orchestra "Birds of Fire" 1983 Brian Eno "Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks" 1993 - 2003 King Crimson "The Power to Believe"
very nice to see dad back. For me 1973 - Raw Power by The Stooges 1983 - The Violent Femmes self-titled debut 1993 - Random Transient Noise Bursts with Announcements by Stereolab 2003 - Tour de France Soundtracks by Kraftwerk
1973: For Your Pleasure - Roxy Music 1983: Kill Em All - Metallica 1993: Midnight Marauders - A Tribe Called Quest 2003: St Anger - Metallica (yes, I really like this album) 1973 was the best year in music in my opinion.
Great choices. I will start with 1963- Please Please Me by the Beatles. 1973- Dark Side of The Moon by Pink Floyd. 1983- Murmur by REM. 1993 In Utero by Nirvana. 2003- Elephant by the White Stripes.
Let's see: 1973: Liverpool Echo - Liverpool Echo 1983: Mark Knopfler - Soundtrack to Local Hero 1993: Jellyfish - Spilt Milk 2003: Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers Cool to see that Aztec Camera album picked. Stray is another great Aztec Camera record.
1973, I really cannot choose between Past, Present & Future by Al Stewart and Angel's Egg by Gong. 1983, The Final Cut by Pink Floyd. 1993 I cannot decide between Anarchy by Chumbawamba or Serpents in Camouflage by Citizen Cain 2003 Passengers by Mostly Autumn 2013 Blueback Hussar by Adam Ant
Great picks but i will like to top those. 1973: can only be Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon, 1983: R.E.M. - Murmur, 1993: Nirvana - In Utero, 2003: Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell.
Nice idea for a video. I'll play. 1973 Selling England By The Pound by Genesis (the best of a great year) 1983 Script for a Jester's Tear by Marillion (the best of a weak year) 1993 Whatever by Aimee Mann (a better year than 1983 but not strong) 2003 Delicate Flame of Desire by Karnataka (a much better year) 3 progressive rock albums gives a bit of a distorted impression of my tastes but my choices are based on the number of plays I've given to albums in recent years. Each of these albusm won fairly comfortably, but the runners up in 1973 (Quadrophenia, The Dark Side of The Moon and Past Present & Future by Al Stewart) would have been the big winners in the other years.
So many good albums released in 1973, Rolling Stones, Mott the Hoople, Iggy Pop & The Stooges and many, many more. But the best must be Lou Reed Berlin or Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon... Hard to find any good albums released in 1983.... Nirvana In Utero 1993 Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks - Pig Lib 2003
1973: Blue Oyster Cult - Tyranny and Mutation 1983: Def Leppard - Pyromania 1993: The Humpers - Positively Sick on 4th Street 2003:The Darkness - Permission to Land
1973 Sweet Smoke -- Darkness to Light 1983 Peter Tosh -- Mama Africa 1993 Sun Dial - Return Journey 2003 Anekdoten - Gravity 2013 Haken - The Mountain 2023 Slow Wake -- Falling Fathoms
For 2013, Dad might like the Winery Dogs. A more traditional rock band with Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy on drums, the amazing Billy Sheehan on bass, and the genius Richie Kotzen on guitar/vox. For Niamh, maybe Scorpion Child, more traditional heavy metal/hard rock, or Mothership, who is more stoner/doom, but heavily influenced by the 70s. All three bands had self-titled debuts in 2013.
missed saturdays with dad! anyway yeah it's insane how much these dream theater albums cost on vinyl . I don't understand why the band won't re-issue them... i had to spend something like 80 euros for train of thought on vinyl. Same thing for black clouds and systematic. chaos. Anyway i'm not spending that kind of money anymore so I guess I will never have a copy of six degrees of inner turbolence until the band re-releases it
Selling England is very good. But on an emotional level, Nursery, and Tresspas are even better. Those two are pure therapy, if you are in a crisis. Thank you so much Genesis!!!
