Great video - I really enjoy your diving into the details. I didn’t know ACME uses a pegged waist. Is this true for all their shoes or just certain styles? In terms of your question(s), I think it’s possible to find quality at different price points given your expectations are realistic. Incorporating bespoke details into a poorly made, lower priced shoe is a waste of time and money in my opinion. You did a nice job of demonstrating this beginning w/ Carmina. An excellent brand, which consistently produces quality shoes commensurate with their pricing. What I respect about Carmina is that they always stay within their area of expertise. While they might be able to pull off a higher level of detail overall, it’s not really what they’re set up to do. If you’re willing to spend what’s necessary to purchase ACME or Meccariello shoes, you’ve reached a point in the shoe journey where your expectations should be met and the details and construction of the shoes should reflect what you pay. Which reminds me, every time I see those Mec STD’s in cordovan, I’m blown away. Kudos on coming up with such a beautiful shoe design!! Question: Are the Saint Crispin’s double monks made from Baker Russian hatch grain? Take care and happy holidays!

Thanks man! StC, Horween hatch grain. Acme, only on 180 Norwegian because Norwegian is not a welted construction so they choose to peg the waist instead of adding a welt just to the waist (although other makers may do this, such as Meccariello). All my other acme are handwelted, blind welted hand sewn waists.

Thank you very much for your video. I really enjoy watching your videos, you are delivering really useful information for me. I am at the beginning of my shoes journey. I have a question, which pair of shoes from your collection get more compliments?

Thanks man! Hmm I really don’t know. It’s probably the pairs you wouldn’t expect or like the best yourself. That’s just how it always works out lol.

I think a fiddleback waist is important for me. It's like the spine of the shoe, an important part of its body. And a sharp fiddleback is aggressive yet elegant in my eyes

Yeah, I think those are benefits of a well made fully functional fiddleback. But round waists will also do this because they’re crafted the same way just with a different end shape. The issue I see, is when people prioritize getting a fiddleback waist, and end up with a $600 shoe that is poorly executed just to be able to say they have a fiddleback. Much better off getting a well made, crisp execution of a top range shoe in the price bracket than the entry level of the next price bracket.

For me, the big draw in a bespoke or certain made to measure shoes (like An Hy shoes) is the fit. A last shape that is custom made for one's foot with both the upper as well as the insole modelled after one's foot greatly benefit comfort (in my experience). Also, the ability to customize certain details about the shoe is a very, very fun and personal experience!

Yeah I mean they for sure matter on bespoke shoes because that’s just part of the expectation. The question or comparison is if it’s worth getting the selling feature of details from bespoke on an entry level shoe, when the details are there but not done well.
