Tip: after skating, leave all your protective gear outside to dry out and ideally expose to sunshine for an hour or two. Kills the bacteria and keeps the sweaty stinky smell at bay. Works for me! Good vid, cheers

Given a choice between joint damage or bone damage I'd take bone 100% of the time. Bones heal - joints are never the same.

Not mentioned in the video but I would recommend a mouth piece also. I was wearing helmet, knee pads, elbow pad, wrist guards. Had one bad fall on an easy jump and broke 2 of my front teeth down to the base. If you are skating even a little aggressive I think the not being cool with a mouth piece is better than not being cool without teeth Edit. Also just found the channel. Really liking the videos. I am just starting to get back to skating also. After about 15 years away from it

A good alternative to wrist guards are street summer motorcycle gloves; E.G. my Five Stunt Evo gloves have a plastic palm slider and a combinaison of mesh and leather. They cost a bit more but they save your fingers and are way easier to put on and off than wrist guards. Plus you can also wear them while biking to the skatepark :) Even saw a guy who had full on moto racing gauntlets that he got for few pennies since they were deemed too used to be safe for circuit use but was perfect to fool around on rollerblades.

A little "trick" I use and learned (also after hurting my wrists and having a hard time with work... I'm a programmer...) a couple years back is: I got an impact palm liner for gloves, and then wear wore some sort of glove on top (but not actual wrist guard). After chewing through some "normal" workout gloves I got some ENNUI gloves with plastic on the palms. So I wear the impact palm liner (it's kind of like a finger-less glove but with extra padding on the entire palm of your hand) and then gloves (*need to be a size up because of the padding*) with plastic on the palms. I also learned to slide on the plastic on the glove instead of taking the impact to the wrist so I have this natural sense of just sticking out my palms to slide on instead of just hammering down on the ground. It works really well for that part, for me anyway. I haven't banged up my wrists or hands since I started using this combo! I have also been throwing all my gear in a washer on "quick" cycle with hopes none of it would crap out (even leather gloves before) and so far so good, been doing that for months and everything seems to work fine, even after drying on low in the clothes dyer.

Just wondering if you or anyone else tried motor cross shin/knee guards and if they work ie. are they flexible enough? Thought of getting those as they provide very good protection, just worried about how they may affect my mobility
@treschlet
@treschlet 4 года назад
the whole "break arm vs. wrist thing" I don't think holds that much sway. The wrist guards are made to slide instead of grab. They're designed to /deflect/ your arm from the surface, and most, to an extent, are actually designed to absorb impact with a bit of internal springiness. All of these things would most likely reduce strain on the forearm bones, not increase
@RaKanMusik
@RaKanMusik 10 месяцев назад
Although, this slayed me on a transition once. I fell awkward with the QP ramp on my right side parallel to me. The wrist guards made my hands slip so fast to the left that i ended landing full force on my shoulder and dislocating it.

Any good recommendations for a tailbone pad? My wrist guards have already saved me when I fall backwards I land flat with my arms flat one on each side using the protruding metal part of wrist guard which has helped tremendously and the metal is kind of getting worn out but they were cheap JBM’s that have been more than adequate so far. I want a quality tailbone pad that will work but I’ve heard mixed reviews on the G-form shorts that work decent but the stitching doesn’t last. Not many options out there for tailbone protection

Are there any good combo options for hard knee + shin protection? I tried the G Form knee pads for ice skating and found them to be painful. I currently use Triple Eight KP22 knee pads and I like the cushioning without feeling overly bulky like 187 Killer knee pads. I don't like that my shins are exposed though should I start pursuing aggressive. Are there any good shin protection addons that would work well together with hard knee pads like the KP22 that offer decent coverage? I thought about using ice hockey shin guards at one point but I imagine they'd feel pretty bulky.

I got a full pad set for 25 bucks on eBay (JBL I beleive), and I just toss them into the washer and dryer after each skate. They have taken some huge falls and slides that would have shredded my skin possibly broken bones, so I don't really see the need for expensive stuff, what is a pad besides hard plastics and straps anyway?
@BacktoBlading
@BacktoBlading 6 лет назад
I think at a minimum you need some pads. The quality depends on what you want to spend for them. There really is a difference between the less expensive ones and the more expensive ones, but anything is better than wearing nothing.

Breaking your wrist and hand is a hell of a lot worse than breaking your forearm. There are so many small bones and tendons in the wrists that can break. Wrist guards are a must. I’m a older skater too, wrist accidents in the past definitely made injuring my wrists nowadays more scary
@noampitlik2332
@noampitlik2332 4 года назад
Wristguards are proven to prevent broken bones. The break will not move up the arm because the guard---even the double-sided stiff ones---does deflect during a fall, thus expending energy. Also, even if they somehow moved the energy up the arm, the arm bones are much, much stronger than wrist bones. Another comment is, if you can get used to them, use Killer 187 Pro Derby pads for the knees and elbows. Snowboarding wristguards are often better than "skateboarding" wristguards, but not always.

One thing I wish I had learnt earlier for my gear: WASH YOUR KIT! If you're skating most days your gear will start to stink. After each sesh give your stuff a quick spray with anti-bactiral spray (inc chin straps) and leave to dry in the sun so the UV can help kill off the bacteria. Every 6 weeks or so I also wash my gear in a bunch of "delicates" bags and with a towel on a hot wash in the washing machine, add a cap of anti bacterial washing fluid with your detergent and you'll smell like a daisy for at least the 1st week! Coming from someone who has shared gear between stinky skateparks and close proximity with other stinky roller derby players for many years, washing gear makes a difference! Oh and it can help reduce the risk of spots on your forehead and chin from having a gross helmet and getting gear rash (especially in summer)!

So...I just got the same wrist guards online and picked the size Large based on the size chart of the website. I actually was in the lower spectrum of the Large range, had 2cm more of buffer, so I thought this should be enough. Wrong. Sending them back tomorrow. (I should have listened XD ) Can't believe they insist on keeping this system :/ I'm planning to get the XL, however, the pressure the wristguard (Large size) puts on your forearm felt really strong, like a blade waiting for me to fall and break my forearm (A bit dramatic but can happen like you mentioned). So I'm not sure if this feeling will get better enough with the XL size or if I should go for the Ennui Urban gloves which don't have support at the top, meaning yes, my wrist can bend easier but there is still some support below. Bit confuse here.
@BacktoBlading
@BacktoBlading 4 года назад
Yeah, one size up is what I do. I didn’t get that blade feeling though. Maybe not the right wrist guards for you.
@WmLatin
@WmLatin 6 лет назад
I just been skating a couple years now and totally agree that helmets are essential- unless you don't care about your BRAIN! (Duh...) Also, I think part of the value of wrist/knee guards is the hard plastic parts SLIDE, dispersing part of the energy of any fall, where skin is more likely to stick and transfer that energy to bones, etc. I've found that in falling my fingers get scrapes- and in the winter get cold- so I use gloves with integrated wrist guards. A company named Hillbilly makes some pretty good ones, both full and (semi)fingerless for summer.

Your forearm is much stronger than your wrist, which is made up of a lot of moveable parts. You'd have to have a really nasty fall to break your radius or ulna. I've been using cheap wrist guards, and the major safety element they provide (aside from preventing hyper-extension) is friction resistance: they slide and dissipate the impact upwards towards your elbow, then your shoulder (so shoulder dislocation is actually a risk worth taking into account too). I've had a few nasty falls (boosted board > 27 mph) and they've saved me from some nasty injuries, but I think I'm going to upgrade to some Demon D30 double-sided wrist guards--they're really the bets thing out there. Since the flex is progressive, they also minimise the risk of forearm fractures. As to knee pads, the G-forms are a nice, discreet option to wear under your clothes unlike ugly, bulky skate knee-pads, and they do their job well for SLOW-SPEED falls (skate parks). For high-speed falls (city riding), they won' offer as much protection as traditional, over-your-clothes skate pads, since the plastic plate makes you slide an minimises the impact, whereas with the G-forms, your clothes get "stuck" on the pavement and you don't slide, so it's more of a direct hit....so traditional skate guards are better (for that purpose). This is based on MY personal experience and reports from friends who use g-forms. In any case, good review! I enjoyed it! Didn't mean to contradict you (sorry, bad habit...), just thought I'd provide an alternative point of view based on my experience :)

i'm someone who dislocated their shoulder in lieu of hurt wrist because of the wrist guards. Though it didn't happen like you'd expect (posterior from shoulder pushed into body). It made my hands slip out so all my body weight landed on my shoulder with it fully extended from the guard making my hands slip to my left. Popper that sucker out on the anterior. Almost puked and passed out from the pain, but luckily it popped back in while i was writhing on the ground.

@@BacktoBlading I wore wrist guards, but a different brand, (REKD), and in a fall, the splint on the back of my pad broke, but saved my wrist. The shin + knees have saved me soooooo much. They cover my knee and downward and I'm about 5'8. Super comfy and totally not noticeable. I do agree with the wristguard. However I would like to point out that the part you land on is quite bulbous. Thus it absorbs some of the pressure and stress before it transfers to your forearm.
