NJ National Guard has a tuition waiver program for both undergraduate and graduate programs. A buddy of mine who was an E4/spc when I was in had his law school tuition waived at Rutgers Law School. He then did a direct commission as a JAG and is currently an O4. NJ guard has one of the best programs in the country for education benefits at state schools.

Currently active duty and planning to reenlist soon. After my next contract I will be going guard or reserve to finish out 20. If I go guard and use state bennefits, can I transfer my post 911 to future kids my spouse and I are planning to have? Don’t want to stay active duty forever 😅

There are plenty of Soldiers who choose to use FTA and STA rather than using their Post-9/11 GI Bill Benefits. There are a few things you need to consider before transferring: • Dependents must be listed in DEERS • If you choose to do, so make sure you transfer at least one month to your dependents before you retire/ETS. You may move months around to existing dependents after separation, but you can only add new dependents when you’re serving. • You are free to take back and use months as long as you have some remaining. • You will also need to have at least four years remaining on your contract for your TEB to be approved. • TEB is an incentive not an entitlement, so you will incur a 4 year obligation end date(OED) from the date of the request. It's always best to contact the education office when considering using your education benefits. We hope it all works out!
I currently have a scholarship that covers 100% tuition/fees and it provides the funds to my school at the start of semester. If i use my GI bill to pay for tuition at the end of semester, will i get back the full tuition amount from the guard refunded back to me since tuition is already paid? No, TA goes to the school only as described within the video, regardless of your scholarship but it’s possible that after we pay the TA fees, that the school itself reimburses you the difference in the form of an overpayment. My parents make too much and on the fafsa, it states that I have 25,000 EFC. And I received bad student loans that doesn’t cover the whole academic year in reason why I joined the guard reserves. Excluding military scholarships, do I qualify for the FAFSA Pell grant since I’m in the guard and I can show the DD214 that I’m discharged from active duty?
The National Guard and Reserve Education benefits work as described within the video you commented beneath. Did you watch it before asking? You get the necessary S described onky while serving in the Guard/Reserve. FAFSA, PELL, Grants is in you and don’t get them just because you’re in the Guard. Those are non-military programs. How does it work if i want to use the benefits for flight schools? Because, mostly flight schools are not universities, instead these are smaller part 141 schools.

Just had a curiosity I was told that if you join the National Guard, it would be a harder to transfer to active duty after you finish your contract then if you were to do Reserve’s and then active duty. Is this true?

Honestly, it is harder. Because the State Guards do not want to release Soldiers, as they will be short on Soldiers then. Whereas if a reservist goes on Active, the federal component does not lose any manpower numbers 🤷🏻♂️ I have 2 guardsmen right now who have been waiting months for their conditional releases to be signed.
@@dayanablack8463 All three components of the Army have their own end strength goals. All three are Federal but the Guard has an additional responsibility to our individual states. For the record, the process to switch or conditionally release from the Guard or Reserve is the same process. Which fall under the same regulatory guidance. A local Army Career Counselor here on Fort Hamilton already shared with me that Reserve is trying their best to hold everyone they can. As the Guard is too but of the Soldier looking to go active duty has a compelling reason to go active duty, it should get approved and both a Reservist or Guard member can transfer “IF” approved. Hey TeamSwartz, Are you only allowed to use the Federal tuition assistance of the National guard while being active in the guard or are you allowed to claim it later on in life?
You can use State and Federal Tuition Assistance in the national guard, just like I described within the video. Whether you’re full time or part time in the Guard but it’s up to your command/leadership on how many classes you can take in the evening if you’re doing Guard full time. There’s no limit if doing online classes providing it doesn’t detract you from your full time requirements of being in the Guard as full time. Hope that makes sense lol.

Do online courses. I go to Post University from CT online and they only use my Federal TA. Which covers all online books, assets, resources and tools to include the Tuition fees. It’s asynchronous, which means you don’t zoom or video chat for classes. Just hit the deadlines for assignments on a weekly basis and you’re Gucci. Time Management is key and if your spouse is supportive, make it happen. Good luck and best wishes!

Ask your DS/Cadre if any slots are being offered. If they allow you to go, typically your state has to agree to it and then you could. Otherwise, maybe your unit if they get slots or win the Best Warrior Competition for your State and they usually offer you a school of choice or something.
