I couldn't agree more! I think it's a great way to start your military career. It's a great way to find a little adventure, learn a lot about yourself, meet some real good/great people. But like SFC Schwartz says, the restrictions are higher than compared to the NG/USAR. Of course, there's alot of factors and what a person's goals are. Either way, this is a great vid and a overview related to Army Info. Thanks SFC Schwartz!!!

I agree with everything but joining the guard. If you join the guard you’ll be stuck in that state while army reserves you can transfer to another unit in another state or territory. I was active duty but my brother went for reserve instead. Was able to transfer from CT to Texas when he got hired at a federal job.

Enjoyed the video. As a reservist for my entire career got to highlight a few things, these may have been covered on your other breakdown video. 1. no matter what you choose, the Army comes first so drill weekends, Annual Training, and deployments come first to whatever civilian thing you have. This is most important when it come to deployment. It is needs of the Army. 2. Most you VA benefits are trigger based on active duty time so injuries towards compensation and time towards post 9/11 can take sometime to build. Remember basic training and AIT do not count towards your total time in serves until you hit I believe the 2 year point. I may be out of date on this but do your research. I am also not certain if Title 32 builds towards this time either. 3. Reserves and National Guard do have full time positions but they are few and far between, they support the unit between drills and may not always be job specific. 4. Reserves are combat support roles, closest to a combat job you will see is Military Police. This is to support Active Duty in all things making it easier for Big Army to keep thin amounts of active duty support. they are there but in combat you are likely to see Reserve or National Guard there in that role. National Guard acts as a state militia so it functions as mini army. You have almost all jobs open to you but you are restricted to the amount your state needs. 5. Active Duty don't completely rule out your reserve and nation guard units in the field. While we may not be as to standard as a Active Duty unit since it is their full time job, we are bringing a ton of skills from our civilian side with us and that can make a huge difference sometimes in the overall operation.

Pretty spot on and thanks for sharing! AGR does act the same as Regular Army AD. It’s Federal AD Service within a Reserve Component. You know I really like this topic. Personally, I chose the Guard. I am a father of 4 and have 2 full time jobs. I had to drop 250lbs to get in and the guard was just a better fit for me. I simply didn't have the time to go active duty and the reserve didn't offer me what the guard did. At the end of the day it your choice but if you are busy like I am then go guard!

I just turned 30, still living at home, one class away to having my associates science degree, I quit my part-time job and have decided to move to Florida in 6 months. I'll be living with a buddy and his family for a couple months to get started, find a full-time job, and eventually get a place. Currently contemplating on joining National Guard down there; I do want to set myself up for the future as well as open up the option to finish a bachelors degree in computer science or computer engineering. Otherwise the other route would be just finding a full-time job and try to finance both rent and part-time (seems more sustainable) school. Through the past couple days of researching the National Guard route, MOS: 25B and 17C, caught my attention. What did you end up choosing for your MOS? Also good luck!

I am a retired SGM, 41 Years of service mostly with Army Reserve. Also, like you, Drill Sergeant qualified (best job I ever had... military or civilian). Good video... loved your subtle points of emphasis. As a New York City resident definitely get your double dip comments, having served with many double dippers. I would recommend you add the caveat (word of caution) that while the Reserves and National Guard allow "more" flexibility, that service still comes first. Deployments, responses to natural disasters, civil unrest, etc have no set time line and our duty remains. You made a strong argument for Active Duty where "your butt" belongs to Uncle Sam, but not as much emphasis for part time service. Many students, business owners, and professional practitioners had their lives, education and livelihoods disrupted because of service commitments. Mission first, people always applies regardless of service component. Overall, good video. Informative, lots of energy, and entertaining. Hoorah... ARMY STRONG!

One thing I'd like to add to this video. I've been guard my whole career, I just hit 6 years in October of last year. Guard doesn't have to be part time. We have state activations, we have state (and some federal) funded missions you can volunteer for. There's an entire website (tour of duty) where you can volunteer to hop on overseas deployments with other guard/active units. Also, not sure if this is all of the guard but California guard units deploy (not activations actual overseas, 9 month deployments) every 5 years. 2017-2019 I spent overseas in Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, and Syria. And I've been on title 32 orders since Janurary of last year for the Covid taskforce. So I have more active duty time than some guard guys entire contracts. You can definitely make the guard your primary income if that's what you're looking to do. That's not even putting AGR jobs (Active Guard Reserve) on the table. You DEFINITELY have the most flexibility with national guard.

Another thing I learned from my active duty time, MOS. Your MOS has a big role to play on active duty. Some spend more time on a training cycle and in the field. Others not as much, and that can give you one of the most important things, time. With time, you can take college courses while on active duty.

VA BENEFITS! VA BENEFITS! VA BENEFITS! My suggestion is to go active duty, document all of your medical issues (without trying to get out of PT, deployments, work, don't be that guy) while you’re in. When you get out use the GI Bill and get the VA compensation benefits that are the best kept secret that they don't tell you when you’re in. I was fortunate to have a Navy corpsman make sure that we were documenting ALL symptoms and injuries (no matter how small). The VA will literally compensate you for things like allergies, IBS, headaches, mild back pain, etc. You don't have to have to be missing your legs to get VA compensation. You can have a plurality of conditions that add up (using VA math) collectively to get higher ratings up to 100% P&T. Benefits include monetary monthly tax-free compensation that starts at a 10% rating, BX/PX, commissary, and MWR base access at a 0% rating, free VA health care that starts at a 50% rating, free college for dependents at 100% P&T, free CHAMPVA for dependents at 100% P&T, DIC for spouses, and depending on your state (CA, TX, FL, etc.)... you may qualify for a 100% property tax exemption. Also, ALL monetary compensation is matched to annual social security COLA increases. There are also so many other benefits as well. You can still get VA compensation if you are in the National Guard or the reserves, you just need to have been activated for a period of time and be able to service connect medical conditions while activated. If you’re getting out or have been out for 20 years, stop by a VSO office (their services are free) and they'll let you know what your options are and point you in the right direction. The best decision I ever made, I just got 100% P&T two months ago. It's not a quick process but I was able to wrap it up in a little less than than two years. Some vets can get it take care of in less than a year if they don't have to appeal or file additional claims. Best of luck to all who are joining or are already out!

I love the info.. I served 9 years in the guard before going active duty. I done this because I wasn't using the education benefit and wanted to better support my family. My civilian place of employer wasn't panning out either. One thing I want to address is that though I'm enjoying the active duty life for now, Coming from the guard I've lost the majority of the time I served and will have to serve just about 20yrs active duty for the pension when I retire, or I cam retire at my 20th year total and draw it when I'm 60. That is just something I dropped the ball on before I switched. Do your research as he stated.

Found your videos and very much appreciate your very informative no nonsense approach. As a mother of an almost 17 year old son who is considering ANG in our state, I’m quite literally cramming as much info as this detailed mommas brain can take. Crash course since I’m very much a civilian. My son has done ROTC all throughout HS and has known he wants to serve in the military from a young age. I had no idea what the guard could offer and I’m really excited and proud of him. Especially since he’s thinking of his future, attending college and has a strong interest in becoming an officer. But of course also nervous and admittedly a bit skeptical. Knowledge is helping to ease my anxiety. Anything you can share about deployments and combat engineer MOS would be greatly appreciated.

There is another option you failed to mention is they get you for 8 years one way or another. You can split that between active, reserve/guard, inactive reserve guard. I just retired 1 April with 31 years, 2 weeks and one day continuous service. I originally signed for 2 years active, 2 years active reserve, 4 years inactive Reserve. I converted my inactive portion and got a bonus when I was nearing the end of active reserve time. I feel that doing Active duty was a benefit to my career in the Reserve. My first duty station was in Germany, I was also a Reserve Drill Sergeant for over 10 years of my career. I regret nothing, and consider the Army s valued part of my past and educated me about life and the world on a whole.

When I was in the guard I knew so many outstanding soldiers that I felt like were stuck in the guard and should have joined the regular army instead but were now committed to a guard contract. Top notch soldiers that absolutely struggled to make enough money in civilian life to support themselves but would be thriving in the full time army. If you don’t have good civilian job skills and don’t plan to obtain those skills but are going to go through basic and AIT anyway go active.

It’s funny how active duty parts of military branches make it so hard for enlisted to work on college education, business, investing, anything to grow or better yourself and invest in your future. Guard or Reserve are really the only options that do because they’re part time. I advice anyone and everyone to go active duty for 4-6 years in any branch depending on which one resonates with you. After the contract work on those other dreams and goals you have and only stay in for another enlistment if they give you the golden ticket aka “WW and the chocolate factory”

I would suggest going active duty for a few years then go into the guard. This way they can earn the full post 9/11 GI bill. They will also earn access to VA healthcare for life. I medically retired from the guard. I get VA compensation plus tricare. VA healthcare covers things like dental for 100 percent vets and eyeglasses that tricare doesn’t cover.

I joined ANG at 30 on a whim. I was working corrections at the time and had a co worker who would go to drill and he would be payed military leave by our Institution and also be paid for his drill weekend by the military & I wanted to double dip as well so I joined. I do not regret joining the military even at my age however I do wish I would have picked a MOS w a sign on bonus. I was the 3rd oldest female. Fast forward I’ve been in 3 years now and my Unit is always offering missions we can hop on and go make $. The last one I went on I came home paid off $15k in miscellaneous debt and bought my brand new car in cash and put the rest in savings. I am thinking about going to school for nursing and I know when I decide to start school the military will help me pay for it. I feel many doors were open to me bcs of the military I was even able to go on an active duty mission within the second year I was in that bcs of the time on mission I was given veterans status and a dd214 which is nice on top of discounts at stores and restaurants and employee hiring preference. I just got back from hurricane duty here in FL and learned how to use a chainsaw fun stuff and lots of memories made with my unit that I will keep forever long after I have left the military.

Yea I was going to say college probably is the biggest factor on decided on going full time or part time. Yes the education benefits are there either way. I believe when I was in active duty there were online courses you could take but it'll be more difficult cause your on the armys time. It would be easier to use your education benefits when/if you decide to get out

@TEAMSWARTZ

You get up to I believe 10 locations to choose from within the U.S. and up to 10 locations outside of the U.S. They do their best to give you from your top three but there’s no guarantees unless it’s in your contract for that specific program at time of enlistment if that’s still be offered at the time you go to contract.

I'm so jealous of today's youth. After finishing 1 semester of comm. college i joined the Regular Army because i told myself i don't want to be old and have regrets of not joining to see what it's like.In the early 80's we didn't have internet for research only vhs tapes to check out Army jobs (MOS) The recruiter pushed Infantry which had a bonus but i settled for a job in combat communications a simple 8 week course.Plus i wanted to go to Germany for my first assignment which i got. I didn't care about pay or benefits i just wanted to be a soldier. Bottom line i did 3 years regular Army then drove home to NJ from Texas and sat on my bed and told myself what now lol. So i joined the local National Guard unit in northern NJ for 6 years(which we didn't have good benefits like they do now)and I have no regrets except i wished i went Airborne but that's life.The friends you make makes the experience much better. Prime example I'm facebook friends with about a dozen guys from my time in the regular Army including my first company commander and all we chat about is those few years some 40 years ago.SFC Swartz i recently found out one of my good friends in the reg.Army retired a CSM out of the NY National Guard with 33 years. Bottom line JOIN BOTH Regular Army first then the Guard. The experiences are priceless EVEN without the GI Bill.

Howdy Sgt. Swartz! I have a question I know you get asked all the time, but thought I’d shoot haha. I’m 18 fresh out of high school with 0 job experience. Do you think it’d be better to go National Guard and once I’m back from training do college pretty much full time other than the drill weekends, or go active duty and wait to do college for when I have 100% of the post 9-11 GI bill? My ANG recruiter sold me on the fact that I can enlist, do 4 years of college with ROTC, then commission as an 0-1E officer. Is that realistic?
@TEAMSWARTZ
@TEAMSWARTZ 3 месяца назад
That’s realistic as long as you are eligible for ROTC. Either option works but if commissioning is something you want to do, doing ROTC will provide stability from federal deployments and focus on college because ROTC wants and needs you to commission sooner rather than later. Def a solid plan if that’s the route you choose. Good luck in your decision making process!

You can’t go active duty as a single parent sadly but the Guard and Reserve is a possibility if you meet the Family Care plan requirements by having someone available to watch your children during your initial training, future activations and deployments. Going full time later on within the Guard or Reserve is possible and I explain that in this video: FULL TIME NATIONAL GUARD/RESERVE OPPORTUNITIES: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mN6pB_nuMxo.html Good Luck in MEPS and may the MEPS Gods forever, be in your favor! 💯 Thank you so very much for watching this video and I hope you stay blessed! 🇺🇸🙏🏼

USAREC here. :D While Reserve may not pay necessarily pay 100% of tuition, with the Reserves you will get the Select Reserve Montgomery GI Bill which starts off at $20k and up to ~$40k with bonus kickers. You will also get tuition assistance for $16k over 4 years. Max bonus of $20k (there are a ton of these for 50+ on the ASVAB. So, you will get somewhere $36K on the low end and $76k on the top end. The average tuition is about $10k per year so it will cover almost a 100% if you get zero bonuses. You will also get in state tuition rates for most public universities even if you’re not a resident. This is great, for example, if you live in Idaho but want to go to school in Florida.
@TEAMSWARTZ
@TEAMSWARTZ 2 года назад
I agree with everything you’ve said to what a Reservist “Could” receive in education benefits. FYI, the same Federal Benefits you just described (I as well in the video you commented beneath) but the National Guard Receives more money when you include the State Tuition. So for the NY Army National Guard (Each State Varies) pays in addition to what you just shared, another $28,280 (National Guards State Tuition Assistance) over the course of a 4yr degree. That’s almost $30k more compared to an Army Reservist in our State. That’s over $70k based on your calculation on the low end including our State Tuition Assistance. No knock to Reserve because it’s a phenomenal option but you’ll never win the argument that Guard is a better option when it comes to paying for college. Hope all is well brotha! I needed to hear this! Headed to the reserves was looking for 31 bravo But after five months of going through the enlistment process and waivers a week before going to MEP to sign contact ..I was told by the recruiter I was denied because of a DUI a decade ago Only reason I was looking for military police is because I want to get into the local SWAT team and become a police officer , So the training would lend itself to my civilian career and aspirations I actually got approved to the army after a couple of waivers which I did not think I would make it So when they told me I was fit for duty. It was like I might won lottery. Only to be told last minute, no I wasn’t good to go ! So back to the drawing board, however The recruiter and station commander offered me 15+ jobs none of which interested me one bit.. I never even thought of the National Guard started looking at your videos and lo and behold. The National Guard has an 11 bravo infantry. As opposed to army reserves, which do not I didn’t make it to the Marine Corps at 17 because of medical issues and I could now so serving in the military has always been my lifelong dream and more than anything being an infantry man Tomorrow at five in the morning, I have to be in MEPS to see if “another option are available for army reserves” However, after watching all your videos and information, I’m pretty much decided that the National Guard is where it’s at. Specially if I get paid 100% of my college tuition.and 11B is available Appreciate you, brotherman!

Hello Sgt Swartz, I currently am back and forth between the guard and active duty I am looking to go in as a 25B. I have a bachelor's and currently, I am working on my master's degree. I don't have the years of experience to land a government job but I know with the guard I can gain the experience and land the certs that would help me get into a good government entry-level role for a 25B. The only reason I considered active was for the daily experience. When a recruiter is looking at a guard's experience compared to active is it looked down upon? My goal is to get into cyber security and this is been the biggest challenge I have had in deciding. Finally, does the guard receive the blended retirement plan also or is it only active?
@TEAMSWARTZ
@TEAMSWARTZ 2 года назад
Either options a great one and I guess your first question is subjective. By obtaining the certs and security clearance is in of itself a game changer when applying for those jobs. Having the full time experience versus part time experience is a thought/decision only you can make. You’re already saving your potential future employer time and money already having those few things thus making you considerably more desirable versus a civilian applying. Blended retirement is the standard for all at this time.
@brittanyvarga3407
@brittanyvarga3407 2 года назад
What if you start with reserve/guard and decide you want to do active duty, the benefits you will receive does it start over or does the time start when you started in reserves.? Like the retirement pension you were talking about after 20 years service, does the 20 years count start when you join guard or only when you start active?
@TEAMSWARTZ
@TEAMSWARTZ 2 года назад
Starts when you enlist but you’ll be required to do 20 active duty years for active duty retirement. Both guard/reserve and active duty all counts for retirement but without the full 20 on active duty, you’ll retire as a reservist. I’m doing a video on this in the near future… Benefits will be with the respective status. When part time, you’ll receive part time benefits and when active, active duty benefits. Any MOS in any Unit can be deployed to defend our country or fight for our country. The uniform we wear is for combat. Plan on going some where at some point but that doesn’t mean you will be. I’ve served 23yrs to date and haven’t deployed or did a rotation overseas. You just never know. I highly recommend Combat Support MOS’s/Jobs but at the end of the day, we’re Soldiers first, then our jobs. I can’t tell you how to feel and as a parent myself, we want what’s best for them. Have a heart to heart and see if there’s a compromise and possibly allow him to serve. If we live to be 100yro… a 3yr contract is about 3% of his life. Fantastic video, this really gave a lot of good insight into both the ANG and the Reserves and has really helped me form a more educated idea on which is the best road for me to go down. I do have one question though that wasn't directly addressed in the video (or at least that I didn't pick up on if it was), if one starts their military career in the ANG for schooling and then after 1-3 years in goes full Active Duty for the remainder of their 17-20+ years of service, how does that affect the pension at retirement? Will that enable one to have access immediately upon retirement, and will that pension be more in line with that of a (from the get-go) full Active Duty personnel? This may be a fairly obvious question, but I just want to make sure I dot all the i's and cross all the t's before making my final decision.
@TEAMSWARTZ
@TEAMSWARTZ 9 месяцев назад
Thank you so much and I don’t recall if I did address retirement but collectively if you combine all reserves and active duty time reaching 20+ years, you’ll qualify for reserve retirement which is less than compared so someone completing 20yrs or more from solely active duty time. Active duty time is 40-50% plus of your base pay from active duty and you’ll collect immediately. Where as Reserve/Guard Retirement you collect at age 60yro. Hope this helps! Hey, firstly… Thank you for your service and all that you have sacrificed for our country. Thanks for posting a comment but it’s incomplete. You’ve stated the obvious that I am AGR in the video. How does that relate to the information provided in comparing Active Duty to Guard/Reserve? I don’t believe you watched it all the way through before making your statement based on what you posted. Furthermore, to help other viewers from understanding your statement, share with them more context to what you mean. Please define the “bells & whistles,” and more importantly, the “nothing?” As you being the M-Day Soldier for 29yrs with 5 Combat Deployments gets you a lot actually. Sounds to me like you’re uneducated on what’s afforded to you or what you’ve earned. Best wishes and hope you feel better soon! 🙏🏽

Right now I’m working in post office. Just couple of days ago I had ASVAB test at Fort Hamilton but I failed it. Because I couldn’t practice well it’s 6 days job. Now I’m trying to resign this job and trying to start study for ASVAB. That would be my 3rd ASVAB exam. I’m not sure should I resign or not if I resign I can study I don’t resign I can’t practice.

Both are great really depends on your lifestyle at that moment. If you have a good stable job but want to join the military go guard. I had a friend in the National Guard put he didn’t have a good stable job and was relying on national guard check basically. He said he regrets it and I think he switch to active, can you do that and what is the process?

He’s got 8 months left and is talking about joining the Army NG and wants to get a full time position on base doing something other then infantry. He really has no clue on what that job will be yet. His heart is search and rescue. His current state he lives in is North Carolina but his wife would like to move to Seattle, Washington for school and her thoughts are well he could do the National guard their. Do you have any info on switching branches after the first 4 years of his contract.

Worst case scenario at the completion of your contract you can negotiate reclassing to a new MOS or opportunity. So I like the video by the way.... I was going to join the airforce then changed my mind to the national guard cause I've always wanted to serve since I was 18 years old so I got my class A cdl 7 years ago and wanted to drive a truck for the guard.... I went through the website with a fine tooth comb and I did find transportation in there... but my question to you would it be like a regular job driving or would it be way different than what I'm thinking?
@TEAMSWARTZ
@TEAMSWARTZ 2 года назад
Yes, you’ll be trucking but obviously at a smaller scale due to it being part time. Ask about the ACASP Program to enlist as a Specialist (rank) and avoid some of the training for having your CDL. It may or may not qualify for ACASP. I understand there’s difference levels of CDL, so you’re recruiter can and will look into it for you. I really enjoy your videos on the army, army reserve or National Guard. When my daughter signed on for the Texas national guard I was and I am very proud of her. But as most when she did join the National Guard I thought it was a part-time service to her state and country. One thing you may wanna address and I know it may be difficult because every state is different, is that right out of AIT She was deployed to the Texas border, i.e. we thought we’d be going to college. Not a big deal for the delay she was earning good money and figured the deployment would be short term. Two weeks before she was two and that tour at the border, she was told she would be deploying to Kuwait. This will take place sometime in late July. Now delaying her college for more than a year. Yes she is taking online classes, but I personally was taken back by how much time almost full-time she was spending doing reserve duty. She is a 27 Delta, and I just like to get your opinion on this.
@TEAMSWARTZ
@TEAMSWARTZ 2 года назад
Is the border mission mandatory because I’m pretty sure they could find volunteers to replace her if she spoke up and requested to leave the mission. That sounds odd to me. Glad to see her doing her thing online but still. I see your concern and hope it all works out once she’s back from Kuwait. Thank you so very much for watching this video and I hope you stay blessed! 🇺🇸🙏🏼

@@jonathanwstx For the masses Guard & Reserve is mostly part time. What this young soldier is experiencing doesn’t sound normal and that’s unfortunate. And that goes to show you when on Active Duty Status, those doors will be closed or more challenging to achieving your goals faster and easier. It just so happens this soldier is some how forced into the border mission and slated for deployment. I’d love to chat with this soldier because I’m assuming she hasn’t requested to be removed from the mission on the border to attend college because I’m sure many other soldiers would love to volunteer for it, much like out COVID missions. If you have a bone to pick with me, come out and say it.

I don’t know if this reply was addressed directly to me, the Dad of this soldier. I don’t have a bone to pick with anyone frankly. But, I was under the assumption that the National Guard was A weekend a month and two weeks a year for training. Frankly I think this has been a great experience for my daughter even though my assumptions were different as I’ve had many friends when I was younger in the New York National Guard I never remember them being deployed for any length of time. My hope is when she’s done with her deployment in Kuwait, is that she will be going back to Texas A&M and completing her degree without many interruptions. I appreciate your commentary, and I know she did not make any request to be removed from the border, and will serve her state and country proudly. I will pass this commentary onto her and see if she would like to speak with you. Thanks, Gregg

Going Guard or Reserve can lead to AD Opportunities as well. I mean you’re leaving AD for a reason, unknown to me but if stability is important to you while being closer to your “new HOR,” then possibly going Guard full time and not have to worry about PCS’kng BS. I’m posting a video explaining it in an overview this coming Monday. That way if and when you do go FT in the Guard/Reserve, all that AD time continues and retire after 20yrs and receive your pension immediately as described in the video you just watched. Hopefully this makes sense…
