Often times the use of retention chains on medieval curiasses elude people, but the purpose is relatively simple, as you will see here.

I remember seeing this in some of your other videos and always wondered where it came from. And it solved my own question. You see on a lot of great helms this large cross near the lower end. I always thought it was abit of a risk to take just for abit of religious decoration. But now I know what it actually is. Now might I say what a fine motor powered steed you have. 👌🏻

It's definitely one of those things I get lots of questions about. And thank you, it's one of Polaris's fines breeds, if a little old :p

Well it probably weighs at least close, so I guess it's pretty much the same thing.

Nice video not a lot of people know this little peace of history regarding armor, also on a side note you may want find a way to tighten up the sleeves of your mail shirt because it seems to be a little lose wich not only adds extra weight do to having more rings but gives an opponent a prime target to thrust as weapon into. Edit: one possible solution is to have specially marked rings that you can run a piece of leather or string through to tighten it up, just an idea. Edit #2: now I have thought about it it wouldn't matter much if a peace of forearm protection was added which would overlap the sleeves thus solving the problem. Edit #3: ok final edit hopefully, I noticed also that the mail ends a little below you chin you may also want to add more rings so it ends right below you mouth to prevent a wepon forms geting in and stabbing the neck, second siching on padding on your coif / aventail thing would not only make it more comfortable but would also add an additional layer of protection.

Thank you! I do plan to add extra plate protection on the back in order to facilitate maille sleeves, which I will certainly apply a taper to. On the topic of maille, that coif was the only one I had on hand at the moment haha. Definitely going to add a proper aventail to that small bascinet at some point, it's already got eh hardware to attach it. This video has been unlisted for a while, and since it was made I actually have adopted some plate forearm/elbow protection.

I always thought the cross holes were just breathing holes that resembled the Cristian cross used by crusaders. TheMoreYouKnow

now we call it "dummy cord" where those of us who have the nasty habit of loosing gear you tie it to your vest, belt, helmet, or yourself with 550 cord

Ok, that explains with one chain. But I saw some that have up to six chains.

I'd like to try making one with more chains sometime, I've seen some suggestions that other chains could be used to hold the sword, shield, using two chains to suspend the great helm instead of just one like I have here.

Can you attach a sword to the chains
@LivingManuscript
@LivingManuscript 5 месяцев назад
Definitely, some sources seem to indicate that there may have been even four sepatate chains attached to the breastplate. Shield, sword, helmet, dagger, I expect that it was probably somewhat modifiable.
