The idea of charging with a wall is inherently funny to me, and I want to get this model for that reason alone.

4" movement, but it does fly which few ever mention and improves mobility immensely

I only just started getting into 40k, currently painting the necron combat patrol, but I just wanted to say that your vids motivated me to pick up the tau combat patrol as well so I'd have a second army to play against.

Im pretty sure that because these fortifications have a transport capacity, they count as transports, therefore if a Pathfinder squad with recon drone and darkstrider are inside, tou could deep strike these fortifications. Id have to deep dive the rules to be sure

@@CommanderNearsight my apologies, I got this confused with 30k as ive been reading bith 40k and 30k rules for upcoming games and im mixing atuff up. Nothing in the 10e core rules aays that units with deep strike ir infiltratw grant it to the transport they are embarkwd in
@fendelphi
@fendelphi 3 месяца назад
@@ghostmatrix5 If all the models in a unit has Scout, then any Dedicated Transport that they start the game embarked in gets the same Scout special rule. The issue here is that these fortifications do not have the Dedicated Transport keyword. For the Tau, only the Devil Fish has that keyword.

I'm happy to help. I find there's too much negativity on some units and we need a bit more fun loving in the T'au side of the hobby because we're always painted as the cut throat way too competitive and mean faction.

Did some checking because I would like the fortifications not to be trash. You're right and the cadre fireblade's ability will not work when embarked as it's the tidewall not the unit that it firing the weapons. Also unfortunately stealth suits can't go in the tidewalls as battlesuits can't be transported. Best option is probably Breachers in a drone port advancing every turn. However even though the drone port ability to fire on all targets sounds great due to the poor ballistic skill it's only going to 2-3 shots a unit. Could be fun for casual games but it just can't compete with the cheaper devilfish :( Hopefully they'll get a change in the upcoming codex.

Great video I’ve always hated fortifications to be honest they look so goofy but the movement thing is cool

Mostly unimportant, but I looked up something on fortifications and for any tournament players, they seem to be banned from tournaments. They may purposefully be lackluster to not be in tournaments, but it still has usable rules for fluff play

So many aspects make these things not work the way I would want them to. 1) They are transports and have some degree of mobility, but the Fortification Keyword means they cant be put in Strategic Reserves. 2) They are not Dedicated transports, so wont benefit from Scout keyword. 3) They have a large firing deck, but with a combination of no For the Greater Good and no special rules allowed from the infantry embarked, the fire power gained is limited. 4) The price means that you could just get an extra full infantry squad instead. 5) They are a vehicle and only T8, so could quickly be killed by dedicated Anti-tank weaponry and help your opponent secure certain secondary objectives. So basically it is a unit that is meant to support your infantry units, but provides very limited benefits for the points cost. Their benefits include: 1) They are a transport, so they can use the Combat Embarkment Stratagem to assist nearby infantry to avoid charges. Then in your own turn, disembark safely. 2) They do have a large firing deck, so if infantry is facing a lot of small arms fire, they can take cover inside and still fire. 3) Enemy units engaged in melee with a Tidewall can still be shot at in your turn(-1 to hit, unless you use pistols OR have the weapon support system wargear). 4) They have a fairly big footprint to help screen against enemy reinforcements. 5) If Shadow Sun is within 6", they can reroll their 1s to hit(when applicable). So far, the best use case I have found is a Gunrig(if it hits, it hurts, fairly durable for the price) to support a Strike Team on home objective(helps screening against Deep Strikes, provides long range fire support vs tanks and big baddies, acts as cover vs shooting and "get out of trouble" against chargers with a stratagem). And during Kauyon, you can still get sustained hits 1 on this thing(you hit on a 5 or 6, so if you hit, there is a 50% of it doubling in value from turn 3 onwards). The Droneport can potentially do some damage against fodder, but that is usually not something Tau struggles with. The low speed and range, as well as the accuracy, is a massive hinderance to generate good damage, and it is fairly easy to destroy. Devil Fish is a better assault transport. The Shieldline has no damage of its own, and the Invulnerable save only works against very high AP weaponry(if in cover, you can get a 5+ save vs Lascannons, so it would need to be AP 4 or better for the Invul to kick in). When upgraded with the extra wounds, the massive model makes it difficult to place and move in an optimal way. And it makes it more expensive. It does screen a lot though.

Nice and interesting video about a theme that’s never discussed anywhere really enjoyed it Thematically they are actually really cool which is kind of sad because how game mechanic wise they aren’t that enjoyable and on most tables they don’t even fit thanks to there extremely massive size But like your ideas :) Never thought of putting shadow sun or the stealth suits in it

I hope in the new Tau Codex they just change the Droneport and the Gunrig from being Fortifications to being Vehicles, and allow the Droneport at least to move 6” . The Tidewall should stay the same though, as that is blatantly more a “Fortification”; instead maybe just drop its points alot.
@CommanderNearsight

I think that would be good improvements. Though I do think that they all really need a movement boost to at least match the lore a bit more

As a noob to 40k and the T'au, I'm enjoying your videos. What is your thoughts on a pathfinder unit guiding 2 Ghostkeels up the board? Are the Pathfinders better used elsewhere?
@CommanderNearsight
@CommanderNearsight 3 месяца назад
If you haven't seen my Pathfinder video I would highly recommend it. And I would have to wonder what else you have going on in the list. I see nothing wrong with the Pathfinders being used to guide Ghostkeels. They are one of the best/most versatile guiding units. The Ghostkeels guns aren't the most impressive though. I'd say they should guide maybe heavier guns maybe. Like have your Pathfinders farther up and spread out to screen and see a bunch of your opponent's army. Then have your heavier and bigger guns in your home deployment (Broadsides, Riptides, Hammerheads, or a Stormsurge) peak out to be supported by them. Ideally park Shadowsun in the back to hand out her reroll 1s aura to the heavy guns. Now that being said, don't leave your Pathfinders out to dry. Make sure that they are either well hidden or, if they've got the forward deploy drone, able to become well hidden with help from their 7 inch scout move.

Quick question about the pathfinders and gunrig interaction. Would the gunrig take a single mortal per overcharged fail on the ion or 3 like a vehicle. As well as the interaction of drones with the squad, I imagine the grav drone wouldn't apply but what about the pulse accelerator drone? does that still give an extra 6 inches shooting? Also love the vid btw, never thought there could be any legit uses for the fortifications. Idk if it would work but it'd be very funny if we could keep a drone wall with breachers in as a strat reserve unit.
@CommanderNearsight
@CommanderNearsight 3 месяца назад
The Gunrig Fortification has the "Vehicle" keyword. So I do believe that it would take 3 mortal per 1 rolled. And sadly I don't believe that the drones on the pathfinders for extra war gear would affect the Gunrig or any other fortification though I wish it could. And I do wonder if you could put it in strat reserve because it is a fortification, but if you could I think it would be a pretty cool little bomb.

Okay, so you get a pass for missing this since... you didn't technically miss it at all, but I'm revisiting this video because the Gun-rig is up for special order at the moment and I'm debating on getting it. My question is, isn't there an enhancement with Mont'ka(?) that allows you to redeploy up to 3 units and give them infiltrators? Or maybe I'm thinking of Kauyon. Either way, I need to check my codex and see if there's a way to pop a shieldwall or Gun-rig up in the middle of the board for the fun of it.
@CommanderNearsight
@CommanderNearsight 18 дней назад
The only thing I know that can get them out into the mid board is a scout move that the Mont'ka enhancement can give
@sideswipe2615

@@CommanderNearsight oh, it was the scout move. Still good if combined with assault and an auto-advance 6”. Something cheeky could definitely be done with that.

What exactly does "while an enemy unit is ONLY within engagement range" mean? I looked that up in all 4 languages I speak enough to understand the data cards but I still can’t wrap my head around it. When is an enemy unit ONLY within engagement range? Is it different to when an enemy unit is WHOLLY within engagement range?

I think our Fortifications look good on the battlefields....but as for actually using it in a game not so much. The good news is Fortifications dont work for any faction.
