How to negotiate for a better wage as an artist. I talk about the economics of art and strategies for proving your worth to you employer.
I talk about my wage history in detail, why and how you need to know your economic value, why we should all be more open about our wages and why it's unselfish for you to ask for more money.
Here's the link for the National Labor Relation Board. Lots of great info there. Dig in and educate yourself on your rights!

This is super important. I'm a graphic designer and my first full time job I was serverly under paid even though I was their longest employee. I found this out by asking one of my colleges how much they got paid for a similar position. This was a huge blow to my ego and left me feeling very bitter towards the company I worked for. Eventually I applied for a different company and got a better wage. Notigotating for a better wage is hard though if you really need a job. Its something that becomes easier once you have more confidence in yourself. Unfortantly companies will take advantage you if you don't stand by with how much your worth.

It's kind of funny you mention that open wage discussion, because one day at work I offhand joked about my earnings (And I rounded up too) and come back later in the day to find all the guys up in arms about how much I make. My employers did stand up for me (my foreman told the guys that if I made that pay it doesn't matter because that's what the bosses thought I was worth when they hired me and really just stood up for me). However, I also got pulled into the office and was discouraged from discussing my wage, just because of how sensitive some of the other guys were about money and that the company (a locally-owned one) hires the individual based on their experience and personality and work ethic so that the wages will differ quite a bit between the guys. It's was a really rough day because I felt kind of called out for a silly joke that was half mumbled, but I will say my supervisor was quite decent in his reasoning. I guess it was also funny because I'm one of the only girls there, and get paid better than some of the guys. (though they gossip like girls, GOOD GRIEF) Just something that came to mind as I was listening to this.

Hey man, at least those raises do keep up with inflation. In Canada, commercial art wages have stagnated for years (Incidentally it's a lot less than in the States). The position i work pays the same as it did in 2009. I did get a measly raise last year after asking for one, but that was clearly the limit they were willing to go. Only the biggest rock stars can really demand anything. I think I shoulda been a garbage man!

Thanks for this video! It's very useful for real life as a working artist. Also, I really encourage ppl to be aware of their peers' salary. Never care what the company say about not asking coworkers about their salary. I always think it's important to know you're not being taken advantage of, so I always share my wage info with my coworkers and know if I'm being treated fairly.

I do some art for commission and people ask me everyday to draw something for them, I tell them my base price is $150, and if you want photorealistic art it's $250. People usually want stuff for like $20-30 and I had to learn to tell them I won't do it even though it's good exposure because I don't want to be the guy who will do great work for $20-30

@Captain_MonsterFart
@Captain_MonsterFart 6 лет назад
Oh god i absolutely hate that line they always feed us. "It's good for exposure, it'll be good for your portfolio!" Bullshit. How is a drawing of their kids or yet another Batman really going to get anyone exposure?! I'm glad you learned to have a base price and to demand what you are worth. It's so hard to say no to those people, as often they are acquaintances.

What about doing art for 20 or 30 dollars lowering quality of it proportionally? Maybe they don't want that good job?

Thanks for putting this information out there. It's nice to get it from somebody who's been there. It's also great that you just focused on hourly/salary jobs instead of freelance. Here's my question. You mention you live in Salt Lake City; are there EA and Disney studios in Salt Lake that you worked at, or were you working remotely? I ask because I currently live in the middle of nowheresville. The closest game studio is hundreds of miles away. I'm wondering if proximity is necessary to gainful employment.
@BrandonDayton
@BrandonDayton 7 лет назад
Thanks Eric. Both the studios were in Salt Lake City (actually a block away from each other). Sadly, both have now shut down. It's not uncommon to work with contractors remotely, but working remotely as a full time employee is rare. Proximity absolutely helps, particularly when it comes to making relationships with others in the industry. When lay-offs and studio closures happen (and they do frequently) it's your former co-workers that end up being your connection to the next gig. You just can't build that same level of camaraderie or loyalty working remotely.

All of the videos are amazing, I can't thank you enough for your wisdom, because it reaches wide range of fields. I am learning car design for example and it works for me 100%. I was also looking at your work and it's outstanding! I hope you succeed in your new goals, I think you are very brave. Keep up the good work, the word will spread, but you need to do some "advertising" for your videos to push them ahead, people need this big time. Thank you again, wishing you all the best from Slovenia!

It's pretty much my understanding that the path to making more money at these institutions is to make less and less art and become more of a management figure. How else would managers defend their outsized wages, but to devalue the "labor" of the artists? And at least at my day job they have the decency to call that 2-3% "raise" what it is, a cost of living adjustment.

The amount you settle on a salary for yourself is your business only, and has nothing to do with anyone else. It's up to you to negotiate your worth to the company you work for. If you think you aren't paid enough, then you can argue the case. However, if you have to do this on a regular basis, the chances are that the company you're working for do not appreciate your value. It might be a sign that you need to move on.
@BrandonDayton
@BrandonDayton 6 лет назад
Your value is very dependent on the value of others. You are part of a market. Your value is dependent on how many other artists like you are out there and how much they are getting paid. The more artists there are that do what you do, the less valuable you will be. The fewer comparable artists are out there, the more you can demand. I guarantee you that the company that hires you is aware of the data. You have every right to be aware of this data too. This is why you should share what you make and share what other artists make. By the way, you also have a legal right to this information as protected by the NLRB.
@DarionDAnjou
@DarionDAnjou 6 лет назад
appreciation has nothing to do with how business works. artists get the short end of the stick in most cases because we are invested in creativity, and money is an after thought. managers and businesspeople on the other hand are invested in money, and creativity is an afterthought. it means they will have a natural advantage that we have to balance out by preparing ourselves with accurate information on what we are worth. if they can, and see that we are ignorant of what we can ask, they will pay less, of course.

absolutely on target with your rights. one thing immigrants and natural born Americans dont seem to realize, at least not until its too late, you only have the rights you stand up for. you dont stand up for yourself, you have no rights.

I got a burning question! As an artist starting out in the creative industry, do I have the grounds to ask for a higher wage if the job is offered to me? In other words, I have zero experience...
@BrandonDayton
@BrandonDayton 7 лет назад
ALWAYS ask for a higher wage. Let them make an offer, than ask for more. You will never get fired for asking for more money and that little bit more will add up over time.
