What Astronauts Revealed About SpaceX EVA Suit Shocked Whole Industry...
Have you smelled something burning nearby?
Wow, it's not because of Starship's testing but the heat of the new EVA suit that SpaceX has already released instead.
This shocked the astronauts and created a big bang in the spaceflight where safety tends to be disproportional to comfort and aesthetics.
So, what Astronauts Revealed About SpaceX EVA Suit Shocked Whole Industry...
Find out everything in today's episode of Techmap.
What Astronauts Revealed About SpaceX EVA Suit Shocked Whole Industry...
May 4, 2024, is a so special date for space lovers and even SpaceX's CEO. Could you guess why?
First of all, as usual, it's Star Wars Day. For Elon Musk, it's the day when his child, Lil X turns 4.
SpaceX and Elon Musk celebrated this day in their own way, publishing the very first intro video about their most-waited spacesuit, the SpaceX Extravehicular Activity (EVA) suit.
What Astronauts Revealed About SpaceX EVA Suit Shocked Whole Industry...
The suit is based on the current pressure suits worn by astronauts on Crew Dragon flights but, unlike those suits, is intended for use on spacewalks.
The suit upgrades include new joint designs that remain soft until pressurized while maintaining mobility, improved thermal management, and an upgraded helmet with an exterior coating that acts like a sun visor along with a camera and heads-up display that provides information on the status of the suit during the spacewalk. Umbilicals provide life support for the suits.

The question I have that so far hasn't been addressed, is thermal management. Present NASA EVA suits has a Liquid cooling and ventilation garment to remove body heat from the wearer. During the early Gemini spacewalks evaporative cooling from sweating and open-air convection cooling was found to be insufficient. Floating around is not exertion intensive. However, actual EVA work is and how that sort of generated heat is removed is question.

The suit is tethered to the capsule which can regulate the thermal temperature of the air in the suit.

How will the equipment installed inside the capsule react to the vacuum and cold of space?
@deontaeb5466
@deontaeb5466 8 дней назад
It’s not the cold in space that you have to worry about it’s the heat. You’ll overheat before you freeze. There is nothing to draw heat away from you to cool you at a rapid rate. The solar radiation and body heat is the challenge. The only way I can think they will keep them cool is by constantly circulating air through the suit and processing it through a radiator type device.

This type of "technical equipment" (although essential for every human being) is considered very little "sexy" and therefore rarely discussed in public or shown in the media (except in the ISS where it seems to be a VERY big subject for some). But I think I read that during the debriefing of the "Inspiration 4" mission the crew reported a slight "displeasure" when using this "technical space for human beings" (the subject is so unsexy that we are often obliged to be in allusion rather than using the names of things). I am sure that the SpaceX teams took note of this and did their best to resolve this rather annoying problem, with the efficiency that we know them to have but also, given the subject, with discretion.

The SpaceX version is a poor mans EVA. We are talking much more simple tech than what NASA already uses. It operates at 1/3 of earths atmosphere because it is not fully air tight, it is not self sustained, and it has only 2 joints meaning they can barely move when pressurized. But still cool they are going there, and any journey needs to start with a first step.

This is still the first SpaceX EVA suit. It has Strengths and weaknesses. So Musk promised there will be better version in future

They will never exceed 300 miles due to the Van Allen radioactive belts!
@kkmiroslaw
@kkmiroslaw 13 дней назад
They exactly are going to do this. One of the objectives of the Polaris Down mission whitch this suit will be used for, is to test how well it will behave during crossings of the radioactive belts. Planned high is 700km above the Earth. What you people do not understand is the real level of danger during crossings of those belts. Unprotected astronaut, without any radiation protection Would take around 11 rad of radiation. (I repeat, with NONE PROTECTION) . Lethal dose is 1000 rads. And those suits are obviusly designed to minimize any radiation taken by a factor of at least 1000. So real dose taken by astronauts will be somewhere around 0.01 rad. You will take much more here on Earth walking without any protection. There are 3 kinds of raditions. Alfa, betta and gamma (x-rays are basicaly weak gamma). Alfa is getting completly stopped by a single piece of paper. Beta by few milimeters of insolator. Only gamma can pass even few metters of metal barrier. - and our sun DO NOT produce a lot of gamma rays. They are safe in this suit as you are sitting now at home.
