Something really surprising happened to my feet since wearing barefoot shoes. I've worn minimalist and barefoot shoes for the last 5 years and can't imagine ever going back to wearing "normal" shoes.

I tried this while I was overweight I was trying to get into shape and decide to grab a pair to run with. Bad idea. I collapsed my left arch in my foot. I had to wear orthotics for a year and my foot healed up nicely and I don't have to wear orthotics anymore but I always warn people about it because of how painful those first couple of months were for me. Everyone is different of course and I'm sure it was mainly because of me being overweight but still be careful guys.

@Daniel Paredes it's possible but I have had multiple people tell me it's the only way they can run. I think everyone is so different that what's good for one person may not be for someone else, especially considering different body types and limb proportions.

@Daniel Paredes I mean, I started waking barefoot first, and I got to 30'000 steps daily before I started running. I had no problems until I started running. But I'm 6ft3, and I was 220 lbs at the time. I think I just have a bad body type for it. I mean, I'm lean now 180 lbs but I think I would still have a bad body type for barefoot. With me being so tall I'm basically asking for foot problems.

@@hamtaru I had that experience with dress shoes once. I swore to never wear shoes like that ever again. It was straight painful, and it lowkey turned me off of dress shoes completely. I would rather wear some beat up sneaks with a suit than some shiny pointy-toed dress shoes. I care about the health of my feet more than looking the part. If I can do both, great. But if I can only choose one, I choose my feet. Fortunately, I found a way to do it my way and still look good doing it. Did you know that a lot of heritage style work boots can also decently pass as formal dress shoes? They tend to have similar construction, just that work boots are more heavily built. So that's what I go with. I'd prefer a slightly wider toe-box in my Thorogoods, but they do fine overall, and I've even hiked pretty well in them.

After trying barefoot shoes for a few months, in effort to find the root cause of my back problems, I noticed my entire body started having problems. From my Ankle, knee, hip. I went back to cushion shoes & immediately noticed a relief in what felt like my body falling apart. What I’m getting out of this, is that we need to train those muscles slowly & not transition abruptly. Of course this is from my experience! Feel free to share any knowledge! 😊

Also, what’s beneficial for the feet may not be beneficial for the back, and vice versus. A lot of evolutionary traits end up being a trade-off of cost and reward. When humans evolved to walk upright, we gained some advantages at the cost of joint pain the longer we live. Cushioning in our shoes is something we as humans invented to help curb this evolutionary annoyance, but it comes at the cost of weakening our feet.
@KatieCottingham
@KatieCottingham Год назад
Please se a physical therapist! Or physiologist depending on where you live. Every PT I've had goes back to the point that we lose core and glute strength, as well as proper adductor strength and control which produces back pain and "weak ankles" due to lack of large muscle support. Every PT I've seen hates barefoot shoes because the research calls the claims quackery and have for over a decade, and their personal experiences as clinicians have shown they do so much more damage than good. Just because we used to walk barefoot in moderate climates, it doesn't mean our bodies were better for it. Cushioned shoes protect joints in ways that barefoot shoes or true barefoot life cannot.

I completely feel you. when I was in my 20s after over 15 years with auto immune disease, my feet began to hurt all the time while walking and there were not many shoes that made it any better. One morning woke up with searing pain in heel. Found I had a massive ulceration under a very thick callous on my heel. It was so bad the infection found it’s way into the bone. I had to have a surgical debridment, and have a catheter port in my shoulder, to deliver IV antibiotics around the clock for 12 weeks. Then I developed sensitives to the antibiotics after being on for a week or more, so they had to keep switching up the meds. I was so sick through that mess I ended up back in the hospital twice. After that the orthopedic doctor said you must use custom orthotic inserts and they sent me to a prosthetic maker where they made them for me. Changed my life. I could finally walk without pain. I only weighed about 80 lbs at the time, so it was really difficult.

Look I don’t like those toe shoes and wear normal ones but your “natural position” is likely not “natural” - sure it’s normal to our society standards but shoes really do shape your feet from when you’re very young, just as posture can shape your back
@kiwimiwi5452
@kiwimiwi5452 Год назад
@@neothepenguin1257 for example in China it used to be a beauty standard to have very small feet. Parents would break their daughters toes and constrict their feet in the smallest shoes possible. And not just their toes, but many other bones in their feet were purposely broken as well, when they were still children. Over time the toes fold underneath and the foot takes on a triangular kind of shape. it looks real nasty, but small feet (..or rather squished ones) were desireable. I believe the last woman who had this done to her had already died of old age, but I may be wrong. but yes, even without breaking all the bones in your foot shoes will, especially since we wear them from baby age onwards, constrict your feet and shape them to what we today think of as normal
@606aichan7O7
@606aichan7O7 Год назад
(kinda in response to above replies) ....but I usually wear bigger shoes because apparently my feet are weird, and they pretty thick. (at least one of them is;; they're not symmetrical) Also I guess from the first moment I realised most ppl who wore heels had to like break their feet into that position, I thought, No, I don't need heels. And I guess my mom never rly made me wear shoes that were too constricting So I can definitely see ppl who wear non-constrictive shoes actually retain their feet shape (Idk if socks would be a considered factor, but I didn't wear socks outside of school so..... like around 140/175 hrs per week, I would not be wearing socks (and I think I usually wore huge crocs during that time period too))

The pain and mind boggling. I bought 5 different pairs of shoes this years, the same reaction. With inverted arches, my foot Dr said NEVER walk barefoot, but I finally thought, what can it hurt, I can send them back. That was two months ago. I got a kind with toes. I just got my second pair. Today I wanted to see if they have really done that great a job, so put one of the new sandals on. I just feel tipped over. HOW did I wear high heels for years. My feet are NOW able to point, before the ankle no longer bent. For me, I will never go back. I call them my hobbit shoes, and love them. I didn't even want to take them off the first few days, it was so shocking and wonderful to have room. It is more than room though, I have wide shoes. skinny feet with broken toes that are going to recover, if my ankles can change the toes will as well. All fine if you’re well balanced and have no tiny flaws in the way you walk or the way your bones are set in your foot. These can be painful and cause pressure points , resulting in thick, painful callouses. If you don’t need that cushion these might be great, but a lot of people, including me, could never stand it. I have to wear thick orthotics because I’ve lost all my natural padding on the bottom of my feet. But I’m glad they’re working for you.

Not since I was maybe 10. It’s awesome that you’re athletic and you’ve trained your body and your feet to be the best they can be. my first bone infection was in my heel, because I grew a massive wound under a callous that made its way into the bone. I told my doctor that it felt like I was going to walk through the bottom of my feet. He said you will. Unless we give you corrective orthotics. Childhood onset of severe auto immune disease is no joke and happens more often than you could know. Even if it doesn’t happen until your an adult, it’s still horrific. I didn’t know that losing the fat pads on the bottom of my feet could even happen, but it does, and it’s not even that uncommon. Consider it your blessing that that you’re athletic and have found a way to work in harmony with your body. I haven’t been healthy since I was 6. @@maryannkom299 Swimming is usually the best form of exercise for avoiding injury. If you cant swim they also have the water aerobics classes at the gym. When standing in water the pressure on your joints is lower so you can still increase your cardio vascular health without straining your body too much. I also think not everyone should run because you only get one set of knees and they get injured easily if you are too heavy or run too much with a bad form. For general health usually the people who live healthily into old age are just people who walk alot and I dont feel its necessary to run and especially not for long distances. My husband and I both have problems with our feet and not being able to find proper shoes to fit. We both have wide feet and "wide" shoes just aren't wide enough. I think it's just that most of the people you know have naturally small or narrow feet. I have size 7 feet length wise, but size 9 in width, but even switching to a size 10 is still too narrow sometimes. I think companies are lying about their sizing to save on costs. My sock size and the measurements of my feet haven't changed in 10 years, yet I've gone up 2 shoe sizes in the last 4 years.

@@cupcake_whaleI’ve got to say that I’ve gone up 3 half sizes in the last 5-7 years…11 does not look like it used to.

I wore minimalist sandals all summer.. the one day I went to put my old shoes on NONE of my shoes fit! It was your video that made me realize why!

You know if you were the correct size shoe, your toes won't get squished either... I don't have any problem wearing regular shoes and I use my toes like hands all the time.

absolutely! My feet have been flexible and 'handy' all my life but only after starting to wear barefoot shoes I realized I should have always picked a bigger size. In regular shoes it's easier to forget all the balancing and cushioning that the feet are supposed provide and that they need extra room to do it. Still love the sole massage when walking though

I am a 23 year old female, born in raised in SC. I am half Polish half Native American. My family never enforced shoes unless it was church or somewhere that required them. Most of them went barefoot. Including my great grandfather who never wore shoes and was even buried barefoot 🦶 As I aged, they gave me the option to roam barefoot or put on shoes if I wanted to. Even at 23, I only wear shoes if I absolutely have to. My feet are wide and my balance is excellent. I don’t recommend it to everyone because everyone is different. However, it is the way of my ancestors and I chose to continue this way because it feels the most natural to me. I am happy and healthy and I feel I have a deep connection to the earth. I feel it everyday against the soles of my feet and in turn, in the soul of my inner self 😊

@@trollmastermike52845 Oh I’m about as flat footed as they come lol. When I do have to wear shoes (going into stores, traveling, etc.) I wear very thin (and now worn) sandals. I cannot bare closed toed shoes. They are so constricting and if work for more than 2 hours they make my hips and feet ache.

Haha its like we were born opposites. My parents say i was complaining i wanted shoes on since i started walking 😂 my brother hated wearing shoes and it was believed its better for kids development to run around the yard barefoot. I hated it since i can remember. Alsways preferred having a thick cushion between me and the concrete or grass 😅 I spent and still do spend a lot of time barefoot cause we dont wear shoes inside and i work from home but also my hypermobile ankles do love the extra support from shoes and boots. My feet are pretty narrow though anyway idk if that has to do with anything.

@@mordecaiissad8529 My fiancé is the same way!! Sitting in the living room or even getting out of bed he has shoes waiting and ready or already on! He cannot stand being barefoot on the ground. Indoors or out. He hates the way being barefoot feels. He doesn’t even really like sandals or flip flops and only wears them around the house or on the beach. Every other time it’s socks and sneakers. He keeps shoes on his feet everywhere he walks lol
