To the reason why the system shuts off in tighter curves: Regulations in Europe (UN/ECE Regulation 79) are limiting the steering angle of the autopilot based on the g-forces. The slower you go, the tighter the corners the autopilot is allowed to handle. I think the limit was 3 m/s^2 so roughly 1/3g. I am quite supprised that the BMW system is not able to predecit this, based on the map data and speed information and warn the driver to take over. Great test - I really enjoyed this.
@SandKraken
@SandKraken 2 года назад
Wow that regulation really made the driver assist way safer!
@briansmith7443
@briansmith7443 Год назад
Lets hope they can use the nav and gps to predict those corners that will be beyond the limit and slow down in anticipation... I'm sure with OTA updates these features will only continue to improve.

My Audi doesn’t shut off in harder curves. Depending on the speed, it will recognize a curve is coming, notify you a curve is coming on dash, and automatically slow down. It will calculate the speed and curve to determine how much it will slow down. Also, you can always override the curve adjustments by hitting the gas pedal during autopilot.

Why does this BMW follow EU regulations on the US roads being manufactured for the US market? It it possible to disable that weird “safety” feature that plunges the car uncontrollably to other lanes on “sharp” turns?

I’m actually glad it doesn’t flip out and alarm when the DA turns off, the wheel vibration is a nice touch. On my other car it has a loud chime when the driving assistant disengages and it startles everyone in the car, even though my hands are on the wheel and I’m driving. OTOH I definitely don’t want it just silently stop working without any notification. So the vibration sounds awesome. I could understand the desire for more warning if you’ve been trusting it more than it’s intended to be as an L2 system.

I own an X5 45e and a TM3. Not sure how much improved in i4 or iDrive8, but telling from the video, BMW's excellent latest driving assist system seems pretty much the same across the current models. They are of course much improved, but even the early i3's from ~10y ago had a decent self-steering capability TJA with just one front facing camera at low speeds with capacitive steering wheels. The eye tracking currently seems utilized for a few other scenarios than normal cruising (which mainly monitors steering wheel touch). 1. There's Driver Assistance Plus which becomes available under 40mph with traffic perhaps only on freeways that allows hands free operation. If you look away, the system warns you to pay attention (similar effect to not keeping hands on steering wheel at normal active cruise). 2. In stop & go traffic or traffic light situations, the car won't accelerate from zero unless you are looking ahead. It just chimes to let you know traffic started moving. 3. It seems to also monitor fatigue level in long driving stints. In my experience, BMW's system really makes driving really easy and enjoyable, while Tesla's autopilot leaves me always nervous/stressful. Autopilot feels like a 3yo that acts like it can take complete control away from me, but I always have to monitor and fight back forcefully to course correct pretty often (I don't have FSD or enhanced AP, but it's way too expensive: 12k vs. 6k vs. BMW's
@phenex551
@phenex551 Месяц назад
Just FYI, the i3 does not have “self-steering” capability. I’ve owned a 2014 for 5 years. The adaptive cruise control only maintains safe distance.
@netj
@netj Месяц назад
European models had TJA that self steers up to 40mph or so. You could get a $300 part that goes into your steering wheel to enable for the US models. Modern BMWs now have the driver monitor camera to allow hands free up to 40 and now 80+mph in some models. Just saying the crude tech that did 80% or 90% of cutting edge tech was there even a decade ago. Perfecting it to go then 95% and 99% then maybe 99.9% will take longer and longer and maybe forever. I'm glad BMW and their suppliers have matured their driver assist tech for that long and in the way they truly assist the driving experience.

The are some German “rules” for EV’s that explains some differences for example to Tesla. Auto lane change has to be done in 5 seconds. Systems where driver is expected to hold the wheel, must disengage very easily and they shouldn’t scream “take back control”, if your holding the wheel. This is to discourage not holding the steering wheel. And they will deduct points from safety test scores if for example lane departure warning does not automatically be on when a trip starts, even if you disabled it earlier. Earlier the lane departure had to jerk aggressively so that people would not confuse it to an autosteer function. This has now been changed.

I have this system in my 330i and use it all the time. I love the system especially in traffic. However, the issue with hard corners is that it does not have the ability to drop the speed slightly enough to take that corner. It simply does not know that there is a hard corner and continues taking it at the set speed. In the second half when you saw it did it fine - there was a car in front of you that was slowing down for that corner. In this case the system slowed the car down enough matching the speed of the car in front to take the corner well.

@philorgneopolotin8762
@philorgneopolotin8762 2 года назад
Yeah I know they always say this isn’t an objective test, but imo the car just completely giving up and veering across multiple lanes is a bit worse than the tesla being slightly to the right like it kept doing in the model 3 test. At a certain point safety concerns should outweigh minor annoyances, even in the minor annoyances may be more prevalent in the tesla. Idk I feel like this was a very capable car, but honestly if the car ever unexpectedly shuts off or puts you in harms way it should be an automatic negative 5 or 10 points. I’d personally take a less-than-perfect system than one which suddenly shuts down at any moment

The feature works all of the time in my 2021 X6. It was acknowledged by BMW that the Traffic Jam Assist in the i4 failed to activate most of the time with a certain firmware, and it has been resolved since the later July 2022 software updates. However, those were not available OTA. Just a few days ago, the November 11-2022.44 update was released as an OTA. That resolves the TJA activation issue. It's not the same as GM where it will not activate in most cases by design.

At first I hated the giant kidney, now I love it. It is a tribute to the very old BMW from the thirties. Now when I see an old BMW with its tiny kidney, I just find it boring. BMW wants to polarize and they are successful with it. The i4 proves to be an excellent car despite the mixed platform, the only real weakness is that it is a bit too heavy. The i4 40 with the normal tires on 19" is on Tesla level in efficiency, which is excellent for the fact that the car is much heavier and has worse aerodynamics. For me clearly the better car compared to the model 3, driving comfort, equipment, quality, design.

Automatic adoption of traffic sign speed does work in Germany, there might be a setting that is off for you. One can also adjust the speed to +10 in the settings. Also part of that is adjustment of speed based on route ahead, for example reducing speed in tight corners or before an expeted turn. But you need to have build-in navigation active for the latter.
@aigarius
@aigarius 2 года назад
BTW in some conditions the car will follow the car ahead and thus drive through places it could not on its own. You also seem to missing the feature of not overtaking on the right side. Also this system adjusts the position inside the lane based on surrounding traffic, for example going a bit to the left when there is a big truck in the right lane. And if you want, you as a driver can give subtle tuck of the steering wheel to adjust position in lane without disengagement.

They gave a minus two to Tesla because the wheel was a tad stiff to disengage autopilot. The scoring system is so subjective at this point that it's meaningless, imo. They just assign points based on feels and there's no standard for what a single point should mean in magnitude. Luckily watching the test itself is still useful. This is an impressive system for the interstate, but doesn't edge out a Tesla. Hopefully in a year or two that will change. We need more AP competition.

That hard turn around 30:30 looks like it handled it better I think is because you had a car in front of you. I looked at getting one before I ordered my M3P. I had G20 3 series at the time. Even if I shut my eyes at the awfully ugly front grills the interior was way to compromised for me. Theres little room in the back and the transmission tunnel means its really a 4 seater. In the end though it was the poorer efficiency, shorter range and no supercharging meant I went with the M3P. Don't regret it one bit.

@@73henny That’s cool, everyone has different needs. The Model 3 Performance is a nice car and suits most peoples needs. First thing I did with mine was upgrade to 245/35/20 Continental DWS 06+ tires. Great all season, good grip and amazing in snow highly recommend. The stock tires are great summers but are a bit too soft, ended patching 4 holes in a 3 month period! They are a nail/screw magnet. I’m actually trading in my TM3P this month for a M3 competition Xdrive, completely different car! Going from no grill to grill for days, but love it.

the charging network is electrify america, it's growing at 2x the pace of teslas network and will overtake it in years time, and right now it is good, has many fast charger.s out of spec motoring has done many roadtrips with teslas and other EV's and often his posrche taycan or cheap $45k hyundai ioniq 5 BEAT the tesal to the destination easily lmfao, why? way better charging and more then enough stations(obviously). It has enough stations for roadtripping, it's no real issue. "lotta expensive options," not really? explain which ones, BMW's awesome driver assistance package is $2k, tesla's is $6k and inferior in some instances, the interior, infotainemnt curved display are easily superior to tesla's as well, it's quieter with less wind noise. This is similar price as M3 performance, but you get more

Good test, but I don't see how the I4 can technically score higher than Tesla Autopilot when it TWICE crossed three lanes of traffic with sudden and near silent disengagements? That's a very serious safety concern which the Tesla system did not have at all. Maybe your scoring system could use some adjustments? Because I've watched all of your Hogback challenges and from your test results I would trust Tesla Autopilot on this road but NEVER trust the BMW in traffic after seeing this. 🤔

You have a good point, though since these are L2 systems, trying to make them drive pretty much hands off is a higher bar than they’re intended for. The failure mode is more dangerous as you go up on the autonomy scale, at L2 you should really still be driving. In other words it’s good for what it’s intended for.
