So much of the conversation around transgender people in America focuses on the extremes. We either talk of famous entertainers or share tragic statistics about homelessness and suicide rates. Those conversations are important. But, they don't represent the vast majority of trans Americans who live and work in cities and towns across the country - people like Hannah.
Hannah is a 30-year-old woman who lives in Harlem, attends medical school, and occasionally gives slam-poetry sermons at a local Jewish organization. She also happens to be transgender.
In this video, Hannah takes us through her daily life. We watch her morning routine, see her neighborhood haunts, and tag along when she goes out with friends. As we do so, she shares with us her thoughts about her gender identity, her transition, and her not-quite-ordinary life.

5 weeks on Testosterone today. I gave myself my second shot today. My voice is starting to crack and that's pretty awesome to me. I just turned 14 this past August. I'm lucky to have a supportive mom, sister, and boyfriend. It's not about who I want to go to bed with. It's about who I want to go to bed as. If you are genderfluid, transgender, agender, cisgender or anything I'm probably missing, don't give up hope if you aren't getting on hormones immediately. If you ever want someone to talk to, feel free to reply and we can find a good way to communicate. :)

@@usernameisusernam many have come out saying so. And souls, in their childhood, both males and females, getting abused sexually, is real life fact. www.youtube.com/@christsforgiveness/videos he, DAVID LYNN used to have communication with the lgbtq++ souls in some of his videos, in which they did state that they got raped as child, once or multiple times. He have lost some of his videos, therefore these which i speak about may no longer be found, I also listen some of the detrans channels: whom have also came out clear that sexual abuse was involved. The same have come out clear about souls who still believe the trans lie and live as a trans. Many FTMs have speaked that being female seemed for them unsafe. Like bible also states: Matthew 13:9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. And not all the time are words needed, to see and to understand the reasons behind. Crying all the time crying myself to sleep wishing I could be a girl. It's only recently that I have realized that I am a girl and through the work and love of my friends I've come to realize that I have just been hiding the fact that I was and always have been female despite the body I was born in. Tyler Durden says "Make soap." - Did you know Brad Pitt shows up 4 times before his introduction? Find you dominant eye: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iK1ZOp4MaMw.html My biology (body) has XY chromosomes: male. My psychology (mind - that part that thinks and feels) is _very_ female. *I . W A N T . T O . B E . A . W H O L E . P E R S O N* But people like you insist I stay half a person, constantly divided, constantly at war with myself and constantly stressed and in pain. *Why must I suffer for you?* _you get abused because..._ THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR BEING AN ABUSER. Think about it! You are trying to justify being a serious ass-wipe to someone by blaming them. _... you're clearly a dude ... yet you get offended if someone calls you that._ *YES* I get offended when someone talks to my genitals and not me. Wouldn't you get upset if some guy walked up, stared only at your crotch and spoke about how small they make sausage these days? That's the kind of insult you deliver by insisting I am a man. My mind IS NOT MALE. I do not think like a man, never have. _All your choice._ I did not choose for you to call me names. I did not choose to be transgender. I did not choose to transition. I _did_ choose to wait to transition and that was a mistake. _Let me ask you something, can you change how old you are?_ No. And neither can I change being transgender. I wish I could. If I could stay a guy and be happy with it, I would have jumped at the chance most of my life. I don't want to be transgender. I don't want the ridicule and belittling. I don't want the insults. My turn. *Can you think like a woman?*

_ I can try_ Exactly. You can _try_ to act like a woman but it's unnatural. Similarly I can _try_ to act like a man but it's unnatural. I've tried for decades but I can't do it for very long. Even then I'm still not very masculine. _why is it not possible to change how old you are?_ Ah. We constantly change how old we are. We get older every second. But from any point in time we cannot change how long we've been alive. It is a quantifiable value that cannot change unless we change the unit of measure. _I don't expect people to abuse you because you're transexual,_ Thank you. *Abuse is never acceptable.* _I expect people to abuse you for expecting them to ignore basic kindergarten science because you choose to_ Oh... you were doing so well! So you never got past kindergarten. That explains much. Nobody is denying science. Nobody is trying to change their DNA! (Exception: cancer research) We are changing our _body shape_ to match our identity - the shape ingrained into our minds from birth. You are denying psychology. One more time: *G E N D E R . D Y S P H O R I A . I S . N O T . A . B I O L O G I C A L . P R O B L E M !!* Gender dysphoria is where biology (body) is a different gender than psychology (mind). My body is male. My mind is female. It's a tough topic. Can you fathom such a concept?

such a sincere and insightful self-examination. thank you so much for posting, hannah. the bit you said about the sadness and loss trans people can feel about leaving behind one self, to move to another that feels more authentic, doesn't get said enough. though it is generally felt to be a positive move/transition, it's not always easy and it can be conflicting. and there is a 'bereavement' process to go through, of sorts, which i'm not sure all trans people are as prepared for as it would be good for them to be. that's why it was so important for you to have said it. 'get real' is a very accurate video description. i'm also glad you apeear to have found a community that enables you to live as you want to live generally free from oppression, discrimination and abuse. in other places in the world trans people can suffer a terrible fate simply for trying to be true to themselves. we must stay strong as a community, and work in solidarity with other marginalised communities (and that means not letting counterproductive intersectional tit-for-tat break the solidarity that unites us in the face of adversity), locally, nationally and globally. i hope your medical degree worked out well and life is being kind to you, hannah x

StrapsChronicles I've known how I felt my whole life and through constant indoctrination from my family was forced to treat how I feel as irelevent. Now in my midlife I finally realize that there is a name for how I've always felt and for the very first time in my life I don't feel shame for how I feel or a need to be more masculine. I now have a lot to do in order to live the life I was supposed to have lived and it means turning over everything I've done up till now. I realize now how wrong things can go when you don't live honestly with yourself and the people around you. I just hope that it's not to late. I've got to keep telling myself, "It get's better." In order to move forward. I wish you the best in your transition.

Since my realisation of my true self almost 8 years ago I must have watched many hundreds of videos about transgender people and their experiences, but this is first video in which the bane of my life (the continual need to shave as a trans woman) has been included. Thank you for showing that, as I feel it's something most cisgender people don't even think about in relation to trans women.

I’m happy to see a story featuring a regular trans girl, not some overdone story about a drag queen or a prostitute. Those stories matter too, but most trans women just live regular lives like anyone else. We don’t all have traumatic lives or outlandish personalities. Wishing her the best in her journey!

Juliette Juliette, I've only ever done song lyric videos. I don't use RU-vid as a platform. I'm afraid I wouldn't garner much of an audience since I'm kind of boring. However, my girlfriend and I were offered a spot on a reality TV show dealing with transgender people. They were wanting a trans couple. The thing I took away from this more than anything else is how she never put her being transgender as the core of her being. That right now in the video she was talking about it but if she weren't then she would just be going about her daily routine in life as the woman she is. As someone who struggles with dysphoria and the fear of what everyone in my life will think of me when I one day do come out it is extremely refreshing and honestly comforting to see people who's transition has improved their life and helped them be who they want to be and not have it be everything that they are. I don't know if you'll ever see this Hannah but you and people like you give me hope that I might actually have a chance to not feel so fucked up and disgusting one day and feel like myself. Thank you for making my day a little brighter with the light in the dark that is your life. Btw I love your hair it looks great.
@AnnaelleD
@AnnaelleD 6 лет назад
@Charles I agree with your so lovely comment. I feel quite the same way. As I've just "welcomed" my transidentity, I decided to meet trans people near my small town and found 2 associations. That's very important because it's so weird for "normal" people (and yet for me too) that listening to people who have transitioned -- and are still alive :-D -- helps me to understand what is happening to me, and what possibilities exist to live with this acceptation of my true nature. And, beside it, watching testimonies like this one gives clues about what to be aware of, and tips (1:20) to use with people who want to understand your feeling. Charles, I hope you will find the way to accept your being and to find a good way to adjust what you thing must be "fixed". A thing that have been told to me: "Don't think you *have* to cut your b***s. It's up to you to know what is best for you." And this was a very important advice. There is not one only way to be transgender, but multiple ways for each one of us to live our life as we want. _By the way, she is _*_very_*_ cute!_ ;-)

@reeflarkin1919
@reeflarkin1919 8 лет назад
+Briar Rose Damn right, trans people are born that way. You do transition to presenting yourself as you are. But you're right in that you can't change who you are. Science doesn't lie, full stop. However, people can, and do, layer their biases and social conditioning upon scientific results to come to erroneous conclusions. e.g. if you have a penis you're male. Too often these conclusions are harmful to the person on a direct level but even beyond that, they are harmful through the messages of gender rigidity and boundaries they send to society. While you ramble on about 'delusional degenerates' a little transgirl is crying in her room because she's not brave enough to kill herself, but she doesn't know how she can live with the bullying and her parents abandonment. A transguy is being raped and beaten to a pulp because other people have an issue with the clothes he wears. You have no idea what people suffer. What would it cost you to be kind? or at least to shut up. Choosing either of those options, rather than spewing poison might just save a life.

+•Rachael Platt, I've just realised, that I'm actually intelligent, here's my 2 cent's on it: I get the whole personality thing, but just like you the Gender thing makes no sense to me, I understand if someone feels the need (or prefers the need) to grow their hair out, put on make-up, Women's clothes etc, in fact I agree with the concept that clothes have no Gender, and you'll be surprised by the number of Men who try on their Girlfriends clothes while she's out (and not because of a Fetish). But Gender is a completely different thing, an someone saying "I just know" makes no sense to me, but I have noticed a pattern on many Trans people. 1. They are usually Mental ill, an because being Trans is a socially accepted thing, they use it as an outlet for their Mental Health, there are people who feel like they are meant to be disabled (one Woman poured Bleach in her eyes as she felt she needed to be blind), but since that type of Mental Health isn't accepted, the numbers remain low. 2. They have nothing better to do, I get a lot of shit for this, but many Trans people usually have nothing better to do, where a lot will either be living off some sort of Government handout (therefor they spend little time out of the house, little time socialising etc), or they come from a privileged background. 3. Rebel, quite a lot will have very conservative parents, very strict parents etc, an they simply do it as a way to Rebel (which is usually during their Teens) and those type of Trans do end up re-transitioning, and quite often the changes aren't reversible (therefore the other option is Suicide). 4. Parents influence, quite often it is forced onto them by the Parents, and you have have to watch a few Documentary's (which are in favour of Trans) to see it (again many of those Trans people regret it later in life, and quite of commit suicide). 6. A lot are simply just Gay/Camp/Flamboyant, and because they are aware of what being Trans is, they feel they are also Trans (again, the number of people in this category, that regret it and kill themselves is huge). An the people who are creating this problem are the Media, as the suicide thing is either hidden by them, or they just say it was to do with society hating on them (which is completely false, if that were true then why aren't there anywhere near as many Gay's killing themselves, plus a lot of Trans people can pass as the opposite Gender, so why'd they get abuse from people for). Or maybe I'm Trans-phobic, who knows.

It always comes from our parents. We're all just emulating them although it can manifest in different ways, the same line of thinking always continues. My parents had a very unique line of thought as well - totally different than everyone else in our society. We're talking about seriously disturbed people - who have seen and been a party to very disturbing things. But their base convictions are decent and dignified. I now extend those same sentiments, and cannot help but empathize with others for what they have been subject to as children. I was tortured beyond belief, I violently sobbed every day from 4 right up to about 10 years old - but particularly from 6 to 10. After I stopped crying I was never the same. I was a shell of a human being, until now, and I'm 35 now. Just a shell. I've attempted in the last few years to trace what was really wrong, and it just always comes down to environment. We absolutely need to create a cultural mosaic where everyone can choose what society they wish to be a part of based on the principles of that society. And if all societies reject you, then we all pitch in to help create a new society desired by those who are rejected. Nobody is out to dominate the world, so we should feel ourselves free to do this. Where there is a will, there's a way. There most definitely is a will, just ask George Galloway.
