I have watched a few of your videos in a row now, and I thought I would comment. I am so relieved and thankful to have come across a channel offering sound, common-sense advice. Thanks so much!
i guess Im asking the wrong place but does someone know a method to log back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb forgot the password. I would love any assistance you can give me
@Ace Jake i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and im trying it out atm. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
I lost 25 kilos end of last year in about 3-4 months by eating one meal/day low/no carb high fats. No modification to exercise. I drank black coffee the entire time, so it clearly is fine. I was like you, I even have up my biggest love for a time (delicious beer) but don't fuck with my coffee!!!
Thank you so much for THIS video, it has been an eye opener for me. I could not get my GLUCOSE LEVEL to NORMAL levels UNTIL I watched this video! The CULPRIT was my EXPENSIVE Lactose-free Milk in my day-long drinking of Lattes. I did not know it contained SUGAR as a result of them using enzymes to break down the lactose. My glucose levels are now NORMAL, for the last week! This, after 3 months of not knowing WHY I couldn't get the "BC" to normal levels, no matter how strict a diet I was following. BLESS YOU DOC, for being so thorough!
We are both in our 80's and still believe in having a strong body and a calm mind. This was an interesting video and we learned a lot. We are doing research for our new YT channel that is all about healthy aging. Thank you so much and keep up the great work!
I would LOVE a video about artificial sweeteners please. I really enjoy putting one packet into a cappuccino during a feeding state when breaking my fast. I hope it has a minimal impact on recovery...
you have an amazing way of respecting and validating differing points of view and explaining the differences and results of choosing one belief over another. if more people followed your lead on this, the world would be a less contentious place!
IF is amazing I have been doing for 1.5 years.lost 70 lbs.And ppl don't even recognize me now.I drink water with fresh lime and black coffee during my fatsign period.
Thank you for showing your true doctor colors by reminding people that quitting smoking is the single most important thing they can do for your health. This separates you from the chiropractors and other charlatans who shill diet advice on here.
Where have you been all my life! Thank you, Dr. Maggs! I watched a couple of your videos, and I am hooked--sensible, smart, and encouraging. I adjusted my macros and my mindset. Fingers crossed!
Calories are a poor metric of dietary mistake. Calories represent potential energy not actual energy absorbed. 50 kCals of cream/fat are not the same as 50 kCals of carbs. Most of the energy from carbs is turned into energy whereas most of the energy potential from fat isn’t digested as to nearly the same percentage. Our guts are not calorimeters.
thank you, an interesting and informative 5 video set. have been doing the OMAD for some years now, usually 5 days/ week and 18:6 the other 2 days. have tried Keto but could not get on with it but have gone from 118kg to 89kg over the last 3 years
The folks at Keto Connect have a fantastic video about artificial sweeteners and their glycemic impact: Allulose, liquid stevia, and erythritol have the best numbers showing little to no raise in levels while xylitol and maltitol were shown to drastically raise blood glucose within half an hour of ingesting them. Sucralose is also okay in liquid form (not combined with maltodextrin which has a high impact as well.) They use blood glucose and ketone testers to demonstrate.
Dan I love love love your schizzle ive been on the USA fasting gurus tryna learn and then you fell into my life like a good strong cup of tea!!! thank you thank you
Yes please! A video on sweeteners would be really really appreciated. love your videos! you are amazing :) thank you for all your hard work Dr. Maggs! I have been doing OMAD IF with a very strict control on what i eat (one meal a day, very low carbs
Has it helped you? I’m sure that was your issue because one girl I watched said that less then 30 calories in her coffee each morning was ok for her in fasting to MAINTAIN her weight but she was NOT ever losing more until she started drinking black coffee only during her fasting morning times
That level of coffee could be the problem, though if you are used to it, could be very difficult to reduce. I have read where higher amounts of coffee can trigger hormone resp0nses, though I am not sure how. Consider some green tea to replace some of the coffee? Have you considered some exercise as a way to jump start fat burning? Exercise (for me it was 30 days of skiing in 6 weeks) eviscerated my stubborn belly fat when 16:8 fasting had stalled. YMMV, but good luck on your journey.
Nice video. Lots of good info - Like your point I'll paraphrase like this: Its OK to experiment and whatever keeps you on track has got to be better than going too hard too soon and crashing out.
Hey Dr Dan... love your content, just noticed that nothing new for months. Hoping health and everything else is fine, would love your return to the channel.
I found your channel a couple months ago and I’m so glad I did. Your videos are very informative in an organized and concise way that’s very easy to comprehend. Also, some of the subjects you cover, I’ve never even considered, or thought of, so it’s interesting content and I thank you for helping me expand my knowledge of health in this area. 🙏🏻
Enjoyed this. Simple explanations about health. I try to apply the principles described and have had success in in the past working towards an acceptable body weight and BMI. I was once diagnosed with severe sleep apnœia and heading towards being fitted with CPAP. I tackled it through a rigid diet, achievement a healthy weight, eliminated my apnoea and was signed off by the hospital. My sleep disorder, however, stubbornly resists all my attempts to solve it, so I'd really live to hear what I can do next.
Thanks for this video. My son is 21 months old and I taste his formula at least once a day. I was worried that it will break my fast, but you put me quite at ease.
New subscriber & new to keto/lchf & fasting. Def liking the content I've seen from you, really helps put things in context IRL. I'm already managing 18-20hrs fasting most days but do occasionally need a 'snack' & this video has reassured me that what I've had (little bit of cheese etc) won't have disrupted things much except my lifelong habit of a glass of milk at bedtime. I'm really going to have look closely at my milk consumption but my concern is how to replace the calcium content. Cheese? Butter?
I love it how you explain the facts but also stay down to earth and its okay to have a bit of cream in the coffee. Thank you for sharing all this knowledge its really helping out a lot!!
No wonder I couldn't loose as much weight as I wanted in my 2 week fast!🙄 Too much honey in my coffee!!😝 🐝☕😆🤣 Thanks for your helpful information! Will remember for next time!😉🤗👍🏽
Your Insulin is triggered every time you eat; I'd rather not eat at all during an intermittent or Prolonged Fast than eat 500 calories. I drink spring water, green tea and camomile tea.
try effervescent Magnesium on an empty stomach. -it's absorbed rapidly. whenever I get muscle-cramps, usually during sleep, what I have to do immediately is drink effervescent Magnesium, sometimes I also drink Calcium, also in effervescent form, and the pain ceases within 15mins, usually a lot less. if your stomach is full, it will take a lot longer. best regards.
i do if something between 18-6 up to 22-2 depending on work hours and shifts and how i feel and so on i still drink water, drink acv+lemon+ginger, tea and sometimes coffee works for me :) what didnt worked tho was consuming like 5 matcha lattes a day and with that half a liter of milk lol
I use almond milk to mix with ground flax seeds and hempseed. And ground sesame seed. I no longer have any interest in sweet things. Sesame has a feeling of sweetness. Very dark chocolate about 80 percent is good for a flavor change but you can’t eat much of it. Keto euphoria is better than anything else. Thanks.
Why is it always green tea? Why not White, Oolong, Pu’er, Yellow, or even other black teas. It’s from the same plant. Also, no one ever mentions loose leaf and it’s waaaaay more delicious than that bagged stuff.
Dr Dan - I just found your channel today and found the videos really interesting - thank you! But - Nothing posted for the last seven months? Boooooo! Perleeeze don't leave us hanging! I've subscribed and will be hoping to see some some more of your excellent videos very soon! If you want some ideas... It would be great to know more about leptin resistance (which I had never even heard of until watching your channel!) and ways one can potentially improve or reset leptin resistance. Also, your thoughts on the body's set weight and if there are any ways that can be reset.
What happened to your channel? I discovered you recently but I was quite disappointed seeing your last upload was over a year ago. I really enjoy your content. I hope you are safe and everything is well!
When I fast, I drink one cup of bullet proof coffee in the morning and bone broth the rest of the day if I feel hungry. Bone broth is low in calories but high in vitamins and minerals. A cup of bone broth only has around 50 calories so even if you drank 10 cups of bone broth you would still be within the 5/2 fast guidelines. I usually drink around 5 cups a day. I also drink lots of water during the day...every day.
Hi Dr Dan. I binge watched about 10 of your videos yesterday and I am so glad i found your channel and website. I switched to a Keto / Paleo diet about 3 weeks ago and have lost 7 lost so far. Only 50 or so more to go. Once of your videos mentioned a PDF guide which I looked for on your website. I registered anyway and would like to know if this is still available. Thanks
Dear Dr Maggs, I have recently started using high quality marscapone cheese, as a substitute for milk & cream in drinks and as a condiment. It tastes divine. The nutrition label clearly says zero carbs. Does this mean marscapone cheese is a good Keto food option? Would eating some break a fast? Best wishes, Simon
Congratulations Dan and thanks again for another great video! I´d like to comment that it seems that the sweeteners aren´t all the same regarding insulin impact they have on the body. Aspartame used in most pop drinks seems to have a major impact in blood glucose levels compared to stevia (minimum impact) when you mesure your blood glucose with a small monitor device for diabetics. Looking forward to see you in next video.
I’ve read that erythritol is one of the best sweeteners you can use during keto if not the best. I’ve been using it for 3 months and I can confirm that ketosis is not affected. Before that I used xylitol for four months but that has slightly more effect on blood glucose.
Dr Dan Maggs some sources i found with a quick search, which, of course you should look further into and possibly confirm: hip2keto.com/tips/best-low-glycemic-index-sweeteners/ www.myketocal.com/blog/sugar-alcohols-are-they-compatible-with-the-ketogenic-diet/
Aspartam is toxic as hell. The best is: learn to forget the sweet taste ☺ Second best is Glycin (aminoacid) or monkfuit-extract. Eryhtriol is an Alkohol. Xylitol triggers Insulin is deadly for dogs!!!!
Hi Dr. Dan, thank you for these helpful, informative videos. I'm curious: are you aware of any studies on the effects of intermittent fasting on immune system function? Thanks!
I am SO HAPPY that I just bumbled upon you!!!! Call it Devine guidance. I am currently bingeing on your brilliant videos!! Thank you for making these videos. I have learned so much from you already. Love love
Hi, thank you for so much info & encouragement . Had a look in past comments, but cant see what effect Marmite, Bovril etc would have, i hate it all but if i can have it during fasting i will, good things in it Folic acid & Thiamin etc & i can get a couple more hours of fasting on a small mugfull. When conversing with others re diets, I cant believe how many big babies out there, "oooo dont like salads !" "Oooh dont like whatever" just have it , if it is going to do you good !
This is the first video I’ve watched which makes so much sense to me - Thank you for the info - I’m subscribing for sure - I need all the help I can get 😋
Terrific video. I would love to see a video on artificial sweeteners. There is so much controversy in the few studies that have been done. I'm a retired RN. I developed C-diff after taking antibiotics for an abscessed tooth a year and a half ago. After eight days in the hospital my recovery was complicated by the cost of the antibiotics. Ten days of Vancomycin cost $5000 with my copay being $1600. I refused to pay that much, so my recovery was prolonged considerably. What finally set me right was taking a probiotic supplement. I was so impressed by how much the probiotic helped that I have continued to take them daily ever since. Since starting IF and Keto, I've stopped all my diabetes meds except invokana and my blood glucose runs between 90 and 140 fasting or postprandial. My blood glucose was even better when I was taking metformin, but the GI side effects of metformin are pretty bad for me. No more than my blood glucose went up without it, I can live with the difference. Six months ago my hemoglobin A1C was 11.8. The next one was 8.1. I'm hoping for under 6 for my next one. I've read about artificial sweeteners adversely affecting gut bacteria. My question is do you think that taking a probiotic may offset some of those changes? I typically drink four cups of coffee with one sweetener each day and then green tea with one sweetener the rest of the day with as much water as I can force myself to drink. When my blood glucose was high, I drank water like there were going to stop making it next week. Now that my sugar is under much tighter control, I struggle to drink water at all. Your videos have been very helpful to me.
Hi! Thanks for your comment. R.e. probiotics offsetting any potential downside.... I'd be guessing I'm afraid! The science in the area of sweeteners is not very good, same for the effectiveness of probiotics! Have you tried cutting down your sweeteners?
Take the chance an teach your tastebuds to like coffee without the sweet sense. This even helps to prevent cravings. If necessary start this journey with Glycin (ist a great aminoacid) - take one package and reduce the amount every other day and maybe replace it with butter/mct oil
Just found your videos and totally enjoying them. Started keto 3 months ago on the advice of a surgeon Best advice ever. I have lost 20 lbs and am at my goal weight when I was in my 20s. Now in my mid 60s and feeling fantastic.
I was casually looking through vitamins, long story. I read what B1 was for and what foods its found in. I realised that I could be running into issues down the line. Over the years I have heard enough doctors say the best source is from food. I was wondering on your opinion how to get around this, not just for B1 but for any other minerals and vitamins we maybe missing out on.
Sorry, you did not ask me, but I will give you my humble nursing opinion. The best way to obtain vitamins and minerals of any kind (except V D only sunshine and some fish like salmon) is through the diet. However, because of many reasons society imposes on us, we may be lacking the ability to consume enough of the daily nutrients our body needs. Supplements are used to supplement any dietary deficits not to replace our diet nutrients. If you are not sure, a good multivitamin supplementation added to your diet will be Ok. I am on vd and b12 because I came short in my labs. That's one reason I choose a two-meal when itermittent fasting, instead of one, to ensure most of my nutritional needs are met. It is a good measure to have annual labs performed that include important nutrients. I waited too long, and now I have to pay a price; hopefully, I will be fine after a while. Good health to you!
Thank a lot for the info. 😂I was about to leave a comment when I started watching. My concern was the Black tea, (Which I love btw😃, apologies Dr Dan) Coffee and the Cigarette. Excellent stuff!
Polish do drink black tea, just not that strong as English make it. That's why they can make 4 cups of tea (2 pints) out of 1 teabag. I love my tea the English way, however, since I live in England. No sugar though. :-)
I've been waiting for a video like this! I needa cuppa with sweetex/hermasetas and a dash of milk I am aware that this may break my fast but was hoping my body would return to a fasted state a fast in a short time. So thanks again for this great advice!!!!
What about spices? With my acv I add spices to include turmeric, cayenne pepper and ground ginger. Would adding spices break a fast at a 1/4 tsp serving per each spice?
I drink 2 tsp ACV + a little bit of Himalayan salt in the morning and it surprisingly help my craving. I guess because I like salty food and have some drink with salt help.
I have a question. I wake up about 5am. So since coffee with creamer breaks IMF. In the morning I have coffee with like 5 carbs of sugar free creamer. Then I get on my treadmill for at least 45 min, fat burning rate. I believe I should be burning off those 5 carbs plus more and actually be in a calorie and carb deficit. I don’t eat until 1pm. In that scenario am I still breaking my fast?
Dr. Dan, Thank you a lot for all of these great guidelines for healthy lifestyle. I'm on intermittent fasting and see a very good response from my body and blood sugar. I would like to know 1) Does fresh coconut water break my fast? 2) Does Lemon water with SALT break my fast? 3) Does Kashmiri Kahwa , product name "Girnar Green Tea, Desi Kahwa " available on Amazon India (tried to put the url here but it was very lengthy) break my fast. Thanks so much for all the help! Best Regards, Arvind Purohit
At last, a Dr in the UK. THANKS Dr Maggs for all your info. One question, I’m 71, female, pretty healthy but have problems losing weight, is it safe for me to do Keto? BB
How about a teaspoon of cinnamon in your coffee? I've heard some good things regarding cinnamon and low carb diets. Unfortunately, almost never is there any meaningful elaboration beyond that it helps with insulin levels.
More about artificial sweeteners please. I was a Marine for about 15 years. Even the thought of "plastic flavored water" makes me feel sick, and drives "bad feeling" type stuff (depression, anger, etc). Therefore, I use those "flavor squirts" or crystal light. Usually with some caffeine in it because of other health stuff (I wouldn't be able to do anything without some). They're all 0 calories, so there's that.
I just found your channel, and subscribed almost immediately. I saw that it's been quite awhile since you've posted new content, but I also saw that you've been working on your coaching program in the meantime, so I'll be looking forward to the videos that result from that.
FYI I drink black tea and I’m born and bred in England. So don’t generalise. For fasting I’m a purist. Only water outside of the eating window. I don’t consume sweeteners or drugs such as caffeine during fasting.
Great job on the video. I do have however a question: what if you drink la medium latte in, let's say, 4 hours? Will it still break your fast? What's the time limit in which a sugary drink can be drank with a minimum response from our body and still be in a fasting state? I personally believe that if one drinks a coffee with 100ml cream in it in 3-4 hours it's still fine and the fasting benefits will continue until first meal. Curious about your thoughts
A great video with excellent advice but if one is to consume, say, cream in a cup of coffee during the 18-hour fasting window then the significant benefit of fasting for 18-hours - Autophagy - is lost.
What about chewing on a few small celery sticks? I've heard that the very act of chewing induces an insulin response, but that small an amount of celery has almost no carbs.
David Barnett This would be extremely helpful to me, if it works!! I hope someone responds. Otherwise, I have to blow through testing supplies and be a guinea pig. 🤪
Any nutrients during a fast will break the fast. It will stop autophagy which is the purpose of fasting. So dead and worn out cells can be cleaned out. Eat the celery when you break your fast
Re: "Who drinks black tea...?" Anyone who is concerned about the health of their heart since adding milk to your tea removes the health benefits to your heart from both the tea and the milk. The real question is how do you drink it without a biscuit. Also, studies show sucralose is metabolized 40-60% as table sugar, which is not surprising as it's regular sugar that has had chlorine poured on it. That's why it tastes so bad.
Just discovered you! After watching Binging with Babish.... I've now watched most of your vids, engaging , informative and accessible. Have you written a book?
Yet another fantastic informative clip - your delivery is great - always find your facts easy to digest - and no doubt do not break my fast - thanks heaps!
I only eat between 8pm and noon. I only have black coffee during that period. I have cream in my coffee PM though. My Keto isn't for weight loss though.
I am about to start my first 72 hour fast and wanted to know if Lavander Tincture will break my fast? I take about 4 - 6 ml 3 times a day for anxiety and better sleep. It's made from fresh Lavander leaves and Vodka 37,5 % Alcohol left to soak in a jar for about 6 weeks. Although by the end of the extraction process there is little to no alcohol left ( less than the amount of alcohol a banana has) I just wanted to make sure this won't negatively impact my fast?
