Glenn Close is such an outstanding actress that she can let her face speak for her. She communicates volumes with a single facial gesticulation. One of the great ones!
I was gonna say! She says so much in that scene with almost no dialogue, and the speaker being cut was such a clever touch as an in-story justification for the scene to be silent. I was always impressed by her acting in this sequence, but even more so now that I've seen a real-world version of this. A family acquaintance had an estranged son who was always in trouble with shady people, and when tragedy eventually struck her reaction was very similar to Patty's: a sense of destiny fulfilled rather than the shock you'd normally expect in someone getting this news. Rather than surprised, Patty just looks resigned, the reaction of someone who had been just waiting for the moment her son would finally get in more trouble than he could handle.
The character Patty Hewes was simply broken by the very final scene just before the ending credits. Both Glenn Close and Rose Byrnes were amazing in their roles. Wow what a show. Loved the opening song by the VLA. That first opening line "Little Lamb". Said it all to set and keep the tone of this battle. 5 great episodes of perfection in my opinion. Ellen was by far the better lawyer from day one. What a cute kid that played Ellen's daughter at the end. She looked like a tiny Audrey Hepburn. Right?
