My eye was drawn to your Chanel post !! Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and experience with us and fourther more adding to our collection of useful information. It made me feel prepared and compelled me to try it. I wish you the best of luck !! :)
A good and varied selection of crops. Well explained and easy to follow 👍. I miss my broad beans but only me that eats them in our house ☹️. Nice one Nick 🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
ailsa craig onions are a staple variety for me to grow every year, but i continually make the same mistake. i forget to grow a variety for storing..this year i will cure that mistake. lol.......................brian
You sound so darn upbeat I had to check my calendar to make sure it wasn't Summer!! Thank you for the disclaimer on zones.....all my Jan seedings died when I put them outside:))))
Hi mate. Well it’s nearly February and that’s one step closer to spring 😄. I had to say that because what’s good to plant here won’t necessarily be good to plant for everyone. January seeding for you is a risky business 😄Take care. Nick
Hi Nick. Yes, it's that time to figure out what to grow. I am in 7A and we just got slammed with a snow storm and two more coming. I have a few started and some more planned this weekend.
WHAT`S BLOOMING IN N.E. FL RIGHT NOW???????????????? My sinuses are in such bad shape over the past 2 days, that my beloved Allegra-D in-/outdoor 24h is NOT WORKING.
Hi Nick, novice gardener here but very keen. Can I use a cheap plastic portable greenhouse when sowing seeds in trays, rather than my kitchen windowsill?
Hi Jenny. Yes you can but they can blow over really easily in the wind. They also get very hot in warm weather. Better on a windowsill to start things off and move outside when danger of frost is past. Take care. Nick
New to your channel just subscribed tried to grow the broad beans and runner beans grow really well then the slugs and snails ripped into them can't put down any repellent as we have dogs Any advice on this problem please would be really grateful very disheartening :-((
Hi Kathleen. Slugs and snails can be a problem particularly in the early part of the season. My advice would be start the plants off in pots or trays indoors on a windowsill so they get to a decent size. Plant them outside in maybe June when there is more natural food for the slugs and snails to eat anyway. Consider creating a small pond to encourage predators such as frogs that will reduce numbers of slugs and snails. There are some slug deterrent products on the market such as wool pellets that are safe to use around dogs. Hope this helps. Take care. Nick
Hi Susan. Thanks very much 🤗 I think Derbyshire would be a little cooler than here. I think it would depend on how high up you are . I’m only about 15M above sea level. If you’re higher than that you might want to delay sowing until nearer your last frost date. Take care. Nick
@@NicksAllotmentDiary not too high up, on the southern edge of the peak so I shall wait a couple of weeks, esp since this is the coldest day we’ve had so far.......thanks again!
Hi . My rhubarb is starting to emerge already. Hopefully your rhubarb does well. Have you tried forcing it by covering it with a bin? That might protect it a bit. Take care. Nick
Nick's Allotment Diary Hi Nick, yeah mine started to emerge late December! I usually cover it with compost over the winter but covering it with a bin is a good idea. I used to have the best Rhubarb but the last few years it’s been mostly spongy to the feel. I’m blaming the odd weather! I’ll give the bin idea a try tho, thanks!👍🏻
This iseems like the beginning of the gardener's year. I intend to sow dahlias and zinnias so I'll get started then. thanks. The onions , broccoli kale I'll get on those Thanks for the advice on the beans. This year I wish to sow yardlong beans. It says sow in Mid may on the packet instruction.
Thanks Lilian. Zinnias are beautiful. Broad beans can be planted now but runner beans are tender so have to be planted when the danger of frosts have passed. Take care. Nick
Nice one Nick. Glad to see you weren't fussy about the orientation of the broad beans - as you say, it doesn't matter! I still have some January sowings to do - well it is the 31st today so plenty of time LOL Oh, it's snowing so it may be tomorrow now. Great advice Nick!
Cheers mate. Yes the roots go down and the shoots go up. Well if you’ve still January sowings then don’t worry as I said it depends which part of the world you live in. Anything that you can sow in January can still be done in February. Definitely don’t be out in the snow sowing! Take care. Nick
Liz said you were doing a sunflower growing contest this year, is that right? I am up for the challenge! I have giant sunflower seeds from my own plants two years ago. I'm armed and ready lol
Hi. Yes I usually run a sunflower challenge each year. I usually start it off in early April and you’ll have until October to grow your sunflowers 🌻🌻👍🏼. Would be great if you can take part. Take care. Nick
I cannot wait to get cracking on the garden this year! A quick question please - what does “F1” mean on seed packets? I also see it on plant labels too, against variety names. I am assuming it’s to do with grading?
Great. Yes it’ll be good to get growing. F1 hybrid are first generation hybrid seeds that have been selectively bred to exhibit beneficial characteristics such as sweetness or vigour. Usually F1 hybrid seed is slightly more expensive than regular seed though. Hope this helps. Take care. Nick
Hi George. We don’t as such. Plant hardiness varies depending on the minimum temperatures that we get in Winter. Looking at a map that’s been produced I’d say coastal North West England is the equivalent of US zone 8A. Take care. Nick
Hi. In the UK you can plant bare rooted trees now. If you have shrubs or climbers that are growing in pots you can plant them at any time of the year that the ground isn’t frozen. Take care. Nick
Morning Nick. Thanks for the upload. Just getting back into gardening now I have a fadden and greenhouse. Thats my planting list for the month. I'm looking at planting a plum or damson. I live in Devon, any reccomended trees? Rich
Hi Rich. If you are after a plum then a great variety is Jubilee. If you don’t want the tree to grow too large then you’ll need to get it on a Pixy rootstock which will limit the eventual height. If you want a vigorous tree to grow in the ground you can get the Jubilee plum on a St Julian rootstock. I’m not sure on damsons but checking online Merryweather looks like a decent variety. Take care. Nick
Thank you very much for this video I found it quite informative especially with the tutorial for beginner as myself a beginner I know now I need the modular tray etc. Would you mind to make a video after they grow how to transfer them into bigger pot or bed or whatever best to do and when is best to do so? Thank you great video I will be ordering the seed today and follow your video.
Thanks very much. Glad you found the video useful. Yes I’ll be doing a follow up video soon. I’m planning a what to plant in March video too. Take care. Nick
Hi Jo. You’ll get some very early beans If you can keep the temperature up . I assume you’ll be growing your beans inside or where you live is it a warm climate? Take care. Nick
@@NicksAllotmentDiary I started them in doors I'm in the UK been out in greenhouse and yes I have a heater in there also have peas carrots onions cabbage Savoy and money maker tomato will be starting bell peppers and chills but indoors first then flowers I use potatoes that I've bought for Cooking that have gone to seed bit never sure when to plant last year i had a really good group I only have a very small garden
Hi Taryn. Thanks for the compliment😊. The buckets are 30 litre plant buckets. I bought them from a company called Oakland Gardens in the UK. Take care. Nick
Very good point about knowing your growing zone, Nick! A lot of goodies can be sown, in February in your area! You have many nice choices!! It's nice to see you getting some sowing done in preparation for spring! It feels good that things are starting off for the new season! Exciting! Thanks very much, my friend!! Have a lovely Sunday!!💚
Thanks Chris. Yes having a coastal type climate does mean we get less affected by the cold weather. It’s been nice to get some things planted. It’s certainly scratched that sowing itch 😃 Hope you have a great Sunday too. Take care. Nick
One day.. one day, I'll come to see that coastal village! Glad to hear you're having a good weekend! Nothing like that feeling of starting anew, filled with hope and anticipation!! Cheers!🤗💚@@NicksAllotmentDiary
Thanks Chris 💚and you’ll be very welcome. We are about five miles inland but it’s a very similar climate to that of the coast. It’s nice to be getting seeds planted and to feel that spring isn’t too far away. Take care. Nick 💚
