What Can Replace PO48 In Watercolor?

Manufacturers are not making PO48 any longer which means that things will have to change with some of the colors we have come to love. Can we mix a color that looks like PO48? Today I am using my QoR watercolors, including one of their newly released colors to try just that.
We will also see how this mix can help us recreate some of the convenience colors we love that contain PO48, like ‪@DANIELSMITHArtistColor‬ Undersea Green and Quin Gold.

I just happened on your video. Since you're talking about Quin Gold, I wondered if anyone has seen DS Aussie Red Gold? It will def remind you of Quin Gold, but more vivid. I think it's gorgeous. It's made up of 3 pigments: Pigment: PY 83, PR 101, PV 19 | Series: 2 Lightfastness: I - Excellent Transparency: Transparent Staining: 2-Low Staining Granulation: Non-Granulating

That one is VERY tricky to try to mix! There are so many iterations of PV19 and PR101 to choose from. I love that color, but as hard as I tried, couldn't ever match it.

I will have to see if I can get my hands on the original paint and give that one a try. It looks like it would be a red leaning pv19 like quin red and probably a more orange pr101 like what we would see in a burnt sienna or from DS since Burnt Sienna is PBr7, I would start with Lunar Red Rock as the PR101. As to the PY83 I don't think that is available single pigment from DS, I would go to my QoR palette for that one and use their Dairylide Yellow PY83, that's where I would I would begin if I were mixing it and see where it was off from there and adjust. I think we will have to mix this one in a future mix because now I want to know if those choices would be correct.

It kills me that all the same paints are affected from when PO49 was discontinued because most brands moved over to the PY150/PO48 mix to replace it and now PO48 is out of production so they have to redo them all AGAIN 🫠

@@ClarkFineArt yes, I agree. If you notice now, the new colors are the color shifting colors. That’s what the car industry is pushing. This is why we can’t get the quinacridones now. They have decided to stop making them available. It really galls me that another industry is controlling what artists have at their fingertips. Why not just keep the Quins available and add to this the color shifting system. I really want all of them. Who are they to say No . We as artists should figure out how to make our voices heard instead of being pushed aside as though we don’t count. Thank you so much for reading and responding. I truly enjoyed watching your video.

@@sheilacruz7922 I'm glad you are here! As to the pigments, I think if they continued to manufacture them just for us artists, the supply and demand would and cost of the manufacturing process would probably drive the price way too high for what any of us would want to pay. Which is probably why we lose out when larger manufacturing needs don't call for a color anymore.

Hello, I am new here and I wanted to help clear up the pigment issue of discontinued paints like Quin Gold. The pigment world is almost solely driven by the automotive paint industry. PO49 did not disappear, it is just no longer being mined for automotive paint. It is easy enough to mull one or two colors. I’m almost afraid to say this but you can still buy the pigment from some automotive paint suppliers or even smaller shops. I did this and bought a 10 oz. bottle and a small container of pigment. Your videos are so much to watch. I love color mixing, and this is a great way to color mix without pulling out paints😃

Yes I believe it is the same with PO48, it's not that it no longer exists, it just isn't being manufactured any longer. Glad you are enjoying the mixing.

Yes! I’m sad PO48 will disappear but I feel better having done this mix that I can still create the hue and some of my favorite mixes that contained PO48!

I am enjoying these mixing sessions! I got a tube of Rembrandt Quinacrisone Orange. It is 100% PO48, still available everywhere and a beautiful colour. I am getting another tube, as it is amazing for mixing. As always, the comment section in your channel is lovely, kind and full of great tips

Glad you enjoy it and that you got a tube of PO48, I plan to enjoy the color for as long as it is still around. It is starting to get scarce. QoR already no longer has it available.

I still have Quin Gold deep from Daniel Smith that's so old, it was pigment PO49. Many years ago, both Quinacrine Gold and the Deep version were both PO49. So glad I bought back up back in 2010.

I recently learned this pigment was going away and had to run to my stash to see if I have any of it left. YES I have one 11ml tube! I always buy 2 or three tubes of the same colors at a time because you never know. Anyway, there will always be a way to create any color you can imagine. Great stuff!

Just got a tube from DS. I have a few pans of PO49 from a handmade artist on Etsy (KOZ AND Prodigal Sons)…I DO wish I had som of the pigment because my biggest use for these is in mixes. (Love my PG50 cobalt teal blue + PO49 OR 48 makes a darker one)

Gorgeous mixes! Would be even more useful if you mentioned which pigments are toxic, not good for the environment, have questionable lightfastness etc. Yes, it's my responsibility to research it myself. However, I expect you already know all about these pigments, and it would sure save me a lot of time to know if it's an option for me. Great vid!

Once you learn the pigment numbers, it's not difficult to remember which ones are toxic. I used to write it on all of my swatch cards. Now I don't need to. Cobalts, cadmiums, nickels, viridian. Cerulean is technically a cobalt. If all else fails, look on the paint color chart or the tube. Happy painting!

@@polgara28 yes, I think Cerulean is one that people don’t realize is a cobalt. That is true Cerulean not necessarily a two pigment mix calling itself Cerulean. 😉

Not necessarily a promo for Daniel Smith, it was just the palette I happened to grab for the pigments I needed. I love that we have some many great professional brands available to choose from. I will add though that the hue does matter. To use another brands colors with the same pigment is fine, so long as the hue looks the same, otherwise it will impact the resulting mix and could lead to frustration because the mix won't match and turn out as expected.
