As I went through the colors I chose for my Michael Harding limited watercolor palette, I discovered something that was not right! Join me and find out what that is and hear my first impressions of these watercolors and learn what shocked me about them as we swatch and mix with these new colors.
Today I am trying Michael Harding watercolors for the first time. We will look at the colors I chose for my limited palette and see if they were good choices as we get a look at what we can mix with this palette.

Michael Harding has created great labels, the info needed boldly printed right on the front of the label. Easy to read labels, I appreciate that.

I recently found your channel and have been binge watching ever since. I want you to know how much I appreciate your black background! Almost every other RU-vidr uses all white, backgrounds, which overexposes the color (in my eyes), and it gives me a migraine because it's so bright. I think a black or dark background provides us with a much clearer representation of the actual color! I would have loved to see some mixes using a cool blue as they totally change up your mixes, especially the purples!

Welcome! Glad you are enjoying the content. I find the black background easier not only on my eyes but also for the camera to balance out the white paper as I am starting to create.

I love these paints. I got a bunch before they made them so expensive here…my favorite color is the cerulean blue…but I really love most of them…

Just from what I am seeing with these five colors, they are very pigmented and really beautiful, with so many lightfast colors to choose from. I may grow my collection slowly one pigment at a time.

Me too! I love them. They are very pigmented. They do dry down ok especially compared with M Graham or Sennelier which stay really gooey.

Hello my new favorite color mixing fiend…friend. I watched this whole video because of this: 1- Dr Otto Cano dives too deep too fast because she's a Dr and she hurts my head, 2- found you through Lindsay and if you two paint together, I made an excellent choice to check your channel out, 3- I have learned so much about color mixing and mixing management in an efficient manner that I can now make sense of color charts and why it’s a learning tool for painting. Bonus learning is the difference between watercolor paints with and without ox gall. These paints are out of my price point, but the time was well spent for the amount of learning accomplished. Thank you, Angela.😊

Double bonus- I like your choices for a limited pallet, but I’d need to add yellow ochre because it’s yellow ochre…that one of my favs🙃 and potters pink is too cool and soft of a color to waste it to mix a convenience color to replace yellow ochre. Still thanks for your hard work.

I put my Michael Harding paints in full pans. They are honey based and super sticky and at first I wasn’t convinced I would be able to bring the palette out and about. I put the palette in an air right container with lots of rice for a few days. This dried them to the level of say, a Roman Szmall pan? So still sticky but not running about the palette. I store them flat, and so far I’ve not had any drama.
@ClarkFineArt

Love the rice idea to dry them out. I definitely don't have issues with them being too sticky where I am.

Watching from the pacific Northwest and they do dry down firmly and i have them in half pans and full pans (I got too confident once trying to transport one palette after a day and the cobalt green needed another day and showed me ha) Love them and recommend the Antique 18th Century Masters Set, Vivid Set, and South African Landscape sets. there are lots of online sales I've grabbed tubes on Jacksons or other vendors and now see them at US stores but you're right, more pricey and easier to get Daniel Smith here in US :)
@ClarkFineArt

Oh no! lol I have had a color decide it needed to explore other areas of my palette too because it wasn't quite as dry as I thought it was. The 18th Century Masters Set sounds intriguing.

Thanks for this! I've been looking at their burnt sienna, but wasn't sure. It really is beautiful. Love the mixes! My swatches are in the sleeves, also. Sorted by pigment so I can compare the brands against one another at a glance. Happy painting! 🌻

That's what I was thinking too, compare one brand to another, I usually have small swatch cards in my palettes to see all the colors in there together. it was the way I was leaning too.

@@ClarkFineArt Well my problem came when I came to things like PY129. It's a green, but it's a yellow. I overthought the whole process. What to do with the mixes, etc. Oy! With the sorting! Ha ha. Enjoy!

Thank you for doing this comparison and showing us the prices. I do have a couple of questions for you today. Is it okay to add a little bit of raw unfiltered Honey to say Daniel Smith or some other good quality watercolor? My other question is how is the granulation in the Sennilier and M Graham for ultramarine?
@ClarkFineArt
@ClarkFineArt Месяц назад
You are welcome. I am not sure about the honey. The explorer side of me would say why not try it. They use honey as a humectant and preserver for the paint in other brands. I would have to do more research into that, not sure what "type" of honey the other brands use, but if it is the same then I wouldn't think it would be an issue, adding a touch to your DS to keep them from drying so hard (which is my assumption of why you would be asking). I have quite a few Ultramarine Blue I will have to do a comparison. I think there was an autocorrect issue in the last question. You are asking about the granulation in M Graham and what brand?
@polgara28
@polgara28 Месяц назад
I'd experiment with a color you don't really like, in case it doesn't work out well. Most people use a tiny drop of glycerine to mix into their paints to keep them from drying too hard. Honey-based paints can be shiny in masstone, and adding more honey could make it worse. M Graham's ultramarine does granulate, but nothing like Schmincke's or Daniel Smith's. Sennilier isn't a name equated with major granulation, either. I did an experiment not long ago, where I mixed W & N's potter's pink with some M Harding's and that went pretty well. It rewets easily. Hope this helps!

That’s why I don’t buy Daniel smith, it’s overpriced where I am simply due to geography. It’s important to buy what you can get locally as long as it’s a good artist’s brand, otherwise you are paying silly money for no good reason.
@ClarkFineArt
@ClarkFineArt Месяц назад
Yes geography has such an impact on what our favorite brands will cost. I think there are a number of good quality brands out there with paint that acts similarly and hopefully we all have at least one that is affordable in our areas. We all need some good watercolors to paint with. IMO
