The Marner and Tavares situations would take a lot more time to deal with, but Shanahan and Keefe, along with the entire coaching staff, could all easily be given their walking papers within the next five minutes. MLSE shouldn't waste any time with this. Start the house-cleaning process immediately and give *Brad Treliving* the full green light to make whatever moves he needs to make, and that includes player trades, contract buy-outs, etc. Don't even bother replacing Shanahan, just have Treliving report to Keith Pelley directly on an interim basis for however long makes sense.
Marner should be traded, but who knows if he will accept it. Tavares ain't going anywhere because who's going to take him? Just let his contract run out and then see if you want to keep him for cheap or not.
I think you saw without Austin Matthews the Leafs were actually playing like a team. When he's in the lineup its like the TeenWolf scene where this one individual does everything and the rest of the team hands the ball over to that one guy and his self glorification reigns supreme. That is the problem with the Leafs, they are not a team, Nylander, Marner, they are a group of individuals that can do great things one at a time. They will never go far with so many individuals on that team.
The fans were paying $2,200 for a pair of lower bowl tickets, in round 1. They’re suckers and will keep coming to games. Why would MLSE ever want to change?
As a Detroit Lions fan, the reason we were mediocre for 65 years was owners doing the same thing and expecting different results. It finally took a new owner to come and clean house from a front office perspective, hire the right coach, hire the right GM and completely change the culture to start seeing new levels of success. Not saying you need to sell the team, but the owner needs to make some drastic changes in order to set this thing straight.
I think the new CEO for the Leafs should fire Brendan Shanahan and then make Brad Treliving both GM and president. Because they say this new CEO is going to be more hands on with not just the Leafs, but also the Raptors and Toronto FC. So I figure Shanahan would have less of a roll now in between the GM and the new CEO. So just make Treliving president and get rid of Shanahan.
@@waynemclean1799 def true but I thought initially that was a good trade and especially after Kadri signing I thought they were gonna be in the playoffs for a long time
The leafs should check out Joel Quenville....great coach that was given a bad wrap in the Chicago issue of the video coach sexual assault allegations. Quennville didnt know that the allegations were sexual but only thought the video coach was causing problems with the players by hanging out with them at bars..etc
last 3 regular seasons ive watched a total of 15-20 games because the refuse to make the proper changes. this team has given me 0 reasons to give af about them
Matthews plays for personal milestones, has 1 goal in his last 10 playoff games, and Corrado wants to give him the captaincy? Delusional. I would keep Matthews over Marner, but Matthews is not captain material.
He’s been sick for literally weeks. He definitely has the 4 week flu it’s been all over the Toronto area. Me and my GF literally were sick for like 8 weeks combined. Look at him in his games from a few months ago compared to his games the last 4 weeks. He looks SO ILL, his face is puffed up, it’s completely red, he struggles to get up off the bench. That’s exactly the sort of symptoms I had I literally had trouble getting to the bathroom I felt so ill, I can’t even imagine trying to play a sport with it. I think you guys forget sometimes that these are human beings, they arnt machines. It doesn’t matter how fit you are or how much you are paid, when you are sick, you are sick. This years flu is extremely contagious and passes back and forth, my GF is a nurse so she’s seen it first hand go around hospitals in addition to us getting it. I think it’s been going around the leafs the same way. I think that’s why McMann was out, that’s what caused Nylanders migraines and I think it’s also what caused samsonov to perform so badly. I think they all have this same flu.
@@Moobeus Another excuse maker for Matthews. Maple Leafs in last 7 winner-take-all games. Record 0-7 Goals 12 Goals Against 27 Power Play 14.3% (2-for-14) Marner & Matthews: 0 goals, 5 assists (6 GP)
It’s Matthews team he leads this team every night sorry but give him the C give Nylander the A. 2 points in 7 games from JT does NOT cut it faceoffs can get you so far with 11 million dollar cap hit and the same cliché interviews get a MAP !!! Time to beat it, touch grass!!
Only change happening is a coaching change. Team hasn’t hit rock bottom yet and fans enjoy the regular season entertainment. You might to see some changes if they ever miss the playoffs entirely. It’s just not a serious hockey organization.
Can't win if you can't score. They scored 12 goals in 7 games and were 1/21 on the PP. In 13 of their last 14 playoff games, they've scored 2 goals or fewer. In their last 2 games in Boston, they went into OT with the score tied at 1 with two different goaltenders. So, the goalies are doing their job. For a team has most of its cap dedicated to forwards, why can't they score?
@@pomerlain8924this is an *excellent* point. 1-1 OT with two different tendies! I never even THOUGHT of that. Dude. You changed my mind on this whole thing. Yeah the problem is totally up front. Dang.. sucks for those guys…
Don't agree. What they need is either for the $10M+ players to score in the playoffs, or get rid of a couple of them and invest the money in other forwards and D. They're scoring 2 goals a game over 3 years now - no goalie is going to save you with that kind of putrid offence.
Bruins fan here.......Yes give Matthews the 'C' and let him captain this hockey team forever. His (Non-Existent) leadership skills dont scare me and neither does his game come playoff time.
@@DDD-qt8bwwell yeah, once it gets to a 3-3 series, odds of moving on may be better in that game, but their stat is still accurate as that 7th game is likely factored into the 12.5% chance to advance once down 3-1
@@Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa369 The Maple Leafs history, that's what he looked at! In that 20 years, in term of round won, the Leafs are tied last...with the Kraken!
Why do people keep harping on Marner but not Nylander? Marner: 50 pts in 57 playoff games Nylander: 43 pts in 54 playoff games Meanwhile Nylander looked unplugged when Pastrnak scored on Saturday. Marner’s more physical than Nylander, and guess who’s setting up Matthews/Nylander most the time?
The better question is, what *doesn't* need to change? The offense that they're spending two thirds of their cap on almost never puts up more than 2 goals a game in the playoffs. The defense, minus Reilly and Brodie (who might be gone in the offseason due to being a UFA), is paid scraps. The goalies aren't anything special, aside from maybe Woll (who is still very young). The Shanaplan has failed. Keefe has been outcoached almost every series. At this point, accept that next year is going to be another wasted season, then blow it up once Tavares and Marner's contracts are up. Matthews, Nylander, and Reilly just signed massive extensions so they're not going anywhere for at least four years, but everyone else should be considered expendable.
It was obvious 4 years ago at least that this leadership/star group will not implement the winning grinding culture on any roster you build around to win a cup. I mean even if they made it past the first round more often, no way in hell they lead you to 4 series wins against good teams. Who is the big culture-forming guy on the leafs? Healthy scratched Reaves?
Matthews is not producing in playoffs. No one is mentionning that. Matthews team... Maybe that is the issue. What really matters are playoffs. 70 goals means nothing if you can produce when it matters.
No one is mentioning that cuz it's not a thing. He was out for 2 games, he had 1 goal and 3 assists in the 5 games which he did play. 4 points over 5 games. Matthews, despite being out for games 4 and 5, was not the main issue. EDIT: He did look miserable out there, so there is definitely something up; despite that, he still put up 4 points in those 5 games. Not great, but it's not nothing, either.
Matthews has been OK not great in the playoffs for most games, but what can you do? He's your franchise center and the face of your team. He would be the last to be traded unless he wants out and asks for a trade.
Marner will get you a lot of results in the regular season, when the ice is wide open and he can skate fast. But once the playoffs start and teams stack the blue line, he plays dump the puck and gets slapped around like a feather in front of a fan. Offer him up and get either draft picks or get a real goalie that can install confidence to allow the defenders to be free. The Leafs have always had a trustworthy goalie that made other teams have respect, Potvin and Cujo for example. Morgan Reilly is an All Star and should fetch something useful by offloading him. Tavares shouldn't wear the C, lacks the fire needed to set an attitude come playoff time, even regular season he was missing in stretches. If we could offload him, great, but his contract was the boneheaded decision of some Penguin guy. Keefe is a nice guy but he is way too soft of a coach and gets dumbfounded when put under a microscope. This is not leadership. He doesn't develop the youth talent and he doesn't hold men accountable when necessary. Just see how the Bruins manager talked about Pasta needing to step it up and in Game 7, he was all over the place even before he scored in overtime. Sometimes people need to face the truth and man up. Props to the Leafs for taking it to 7 games, that was talent and grit. And at last, for some fans who bring about so much negativity by saying things like "I want to ditch this team" or "I regret rooting for this team", calm down. This team has a bunch of great young guys and a generational talent in Auston Matthews. Though lost, I am grateful for these Leafs when compared to what was before Matthews came. a few changes and this team is competing for Cups, like the Pens, Caps, and Lightning.
Matthews might be their best player, but the Leafs play more like a team when he's out of the lineup for some reason. Games 5 and 6 are two perfect recent examples. Either they are all waiting for him to do something, or they all adopt his (seemingly) passive mindset which just doesn't set the right tone. But what do I know.
Tavares should be bought out of his contact and if he was a TRUE Captain/leader commited to winning with the Leafs he should sign for less like a home town discount similar to what Crosby did to keep their core when they were winning which in turn will leave some cap space to accuire some depth instead of being front loaded and always depending on Matthews and Nylander to score all the goals
They were a totally different team without him! Then they went back to shitting the bed as soon as he comes back into the lineup... They have a winning record without him, so honestly, who's the real cancer on this team? ;-)
They won both games with Joseph Woll, and Matthews missed those. The team played better with Woll in net. The game they won before that they scored 3 goals - Matthews scored one and assisted on the other 2. Besides that, the team played just as well in game 7 but didn't pull it off.
I think the city needs to stop blowing smoke up the entire organization's @ss. Theyre just a corporate money making machine, and the 'fans' (lets face it most of those seats are bought by corporations as perks) just keep going to the games, handing over rediculous amounts of money, for what. The NHL of course doesnt care, because Toronto generates enough revenue to keep half the NHL small teams afloat, and give Bettman his chance to play his little 'grow it in the US' game. If people decided to finally drop this team like the hot stinky turd it really is, maybe they'd stop and listen. Until then, naw. Its business as usual.
When they built the core I said this team will win nothing. Comments best ever it will be a dynasty. Trade Mathew's to Utah thay will want a star and the Leafs will get the most.
Don't need a rebuild. They just need to learn to play playoff hockey, kinda like they did in games 5,6,7. Something changed in those games and it was for the better. Playoff hockey is all about ground and pound, dump and chase, check and forecheck, commitment and sacrifice all in a relentless and unwavering manner. A really really really good netminder is handy too :) JMHO as a couch potato hockey fan. I could be wrong.
Shanahan needs to go, Keefe did his best but ultimately needs will also need to go. Marner should not only be traded but should never be allowed in Toronto again.
I agree Marner belongs on a milk carton for always going MIA in the playoffs. Marner is a 🤡 a total embarrassment to the # 16 which Tucker wore with courage. That was Marner first mistake wearing Darcy Tuckers #16 & not showing any heart whatsoever!
Unfortunately the last GM that suggested that Marner should be traded was fired by Shanny but now is it possible that even Brendan is out of a job since he is the ultimate authority in Toronto??
The Core Four have to be changed. Matthews and Nylander showed their stuff these playoffs. Taveres played well but was well good enough. Marner just doesn't to show up enough of the times in the playoffs....certainly not enough when they were without Nylander or even Matthews. Bertuzzi and Domi showed their stuff these playoffs, as did Knies. Edmundson and McCabe showed they belong with their play. Reilly was okay. Woll was lights out best goalie. But too much $ tied up in the Core Four to keep trying for another "wait until next year" approach. Ultimately it is not about regular season records but playoff results. So what changes need to be made? Despite their no-trade clauses new homes need to be found for Marner and Taveres. Free up some $ for some better defensemen & for true first string goalie (and maybe not Markstrom) while Woll is backup. Make Matthews Captain. Use Marner and Taveres to get some of missing pieces in trades. Use saved $ to resign Domi and Bertuzzi....and definitely keep Edmundson and McCabe....bye bye to Giordano and Brodie. Let Treliving do some magic and add his fingerprints to this team....add grit.....get a new coach as Keefe hasn't gotten them there in too many tries.....and maybe Shanny your time is up and so is your 'plan'.
Agreed, even tho he was out for the first three games, he scored 3 goals in 4 games. And this is fighting through debilitating migraines (causing vision problems). That man should be wearing the C on his chest next season.
TSN, where do you find these guys from? Both Marner and Tavares have no trade in their contracts for another year. They're not going anywhere. Matthews is only good during the season. Matthews during the playoffs only had 1 goal. For a guy who had 60+ goals for the season, only having 1 goal post season is horrible.
NMCs/NTCs are meaningless with multiple ways to deal with them. All that needs to be done is make life miserable for a player(s) and they'd want to be out of Toronto. Can you imagine agreeing to a trade with a legitimate Stanley Cup contender? Big incentive. Only two examples of many more ways to deal with the situation.
I’m not a leaf’s fan, but say Woll started this series. They prob wouldn’t have been down 3-1. From objective opinion, they have a very good roster. Couple tweaks, not an overhaul.
The more i think about it the more i believe this falls on coaching and management. I think Matthews making such a hard push for 70 goals really drained him and now in hindsight they should have sat certin players to heal up for the playoffs once they clinched at 75 games because look at the series: Nylander misses the first couple of games and then Matthews sits and even when he came back you could tell he wasn't 100% the team was never in a healthy spot all series long. So yeah i think the team mangement needed to step in and sit the banged up guys to rest up for a playoff run but instead opted for the regular season accolades and it came back to bite them in the end. Basically Keefe and Shanahan all got to go then push hard on buying out Tavares hoping he commits to a 1 year deal for less money on the cap and try and fill out the roster with better depth IF they want to make actual push for a cup. the way the team in structured now is way to top heavy 4 guys (Matthews, Nylander, Mariner, Tavares) taking up way to much cap space causing lack of depth/role players.
I'm a VGK fan from the States, but from what I'm hearing, the Toronto Maple Leafs are the Dallas Cowboys of the NHL. Leafs: no playoff series wins in 8 years Cowboys: No NFC championship game appearances in 28 years.
Tough job to fix the Leafs. 1. To move Tavares, you'd probably need to eat some of his salary and give up a draft pick. You won't get much for him. 2. Can't see getting much for Marner with a year left on his deal, a history of poor playoff performance, and his asking price will probably be $12-13 million/year. 3. Nylander could be moved for a good return but he's the only one of the big 4 that has shown some gumption in the playoffs. The boldest move would be to move Matthews. You'd get a ton for him and likely be able to quickly rebuild but I don't think they'll do that. So, I expect Keefe to be gone and Shanahan to be given one more year to get this team moving in the right direction. Once this core group lost to The Blue Jackets in 2020 and blew that series against Montreal in 2021, it was clearly evident that this core could not get it done come playoff time. But the great regular seasons made Shanahan and Dubas buy into the hype of this team. I'm surprised that Shanahan has put up with this for as long as he has. He is one of grittiest and toughest players in NHL history, played on gritty teams in Detroit, and was coached by some tough old school men in Bowman and Babcock. Yet, he's allowed softness to permeate his Leafs teams for the last decade.
They have many pieces. They have to wait until Tavares and Marner contracts are up. And they have Muzzin on the books too. Then they will have the cap space to add to Matthews and Nylander.
The biggest change that needs to happen is the coach. Keefe is not utilizing the players in the most effective way, and this was demonstrated in how he changed the lines in Game 4 and then had their worst game of the entire series. The level of effort and intensity finally got to where it needed to be in Games 5-7, but they should have been playing that way from Game 1.
Management should not need "a little time" to figure out what to do about this team. They knew before the series ended. They could have committed to it over one beer post-game Sat. night. Now, do they have the stones to do it???
What GM in their right mind would trade with the leafs. Their players are over paid, over rated and under perform in the playoffs. Scotty Bowman said the regular season is preseason to the playoffs. The Leaf organization sill doesn't get it
Will they sell every ticket they can print? Drive TV HNIC ratings and sports radio listeners? The most profitable team in the NHL has no problem they can see. So why change anything?
They played very well as a team without Matthews instead of a team playing to pad Matthews goal stats. Explore a trade involving Matthews and a legit goalie. You will be looking at a serious cup contender
Toronto's core four players will account for $46.653 million out of a projected $87.675 million cap max for next season. Which is 51%, now try to fill everyone else with 49%. This team is awfully built. Edit : Marner cap hit is 10.9 million, 3 points in 7 games, Tavares cap hit is 11 million, 2 points in 7 games.
One: the clip they showed the 3 stooges arguing? Nylander was mic’d up for likely a Netflix show, because the very next day at practice Nylander and Marner were sitting beside each other Laughing. Two: this team was never built for playoffs. Dubas built this team to be a puck possession team, which has proven not to work in the Cycling Playoffs. Three: Dubas had the chance Fall of 2018 to get an actual #1 D Man which he failed to do and resigned Nylander when the Leafs were Top 5 in scoring in the NHL. Four: trade Marner with a No Move clause? That would be Money in Money out. If there’s a #1 D man out there @$11 mill per that team won’t trade him. Five: before Any player personnel moves are made the Management MUST change, that being Coach and President. I’d see what George McPhee wanted and pay him a boat lode to come in as President(he built Vegas into a Perennial great team). The Coach is a no brainer. I’d fire Any coach that Dubas hired. There’s Quenville, Barube and a couple more out there to get.
It wouldn't surprise me either bc the Maple Laughs are always the last to know just how bad the players they have really are. They are too busy over evaluating them & letting them get huge contracts these snot nose kids only play for the name on the back not the crest on the front like how Gary Roberts, Clark, Gilmour etc use too play with heart & soul.
Now for some ancient history…. Keep in mind: the season after the Oilers traded 99, the Oilers won themselves another Cup. Gretzky had 149 points in 87-88.
the contracts will make any change difficult , but the leafs are not a cup contender ! if the fans want a run and gun regular season and a playoff flameout next year then this is your team , but if fans want to build a solid contender serious change is required !
I think "the guy who struggles in the playoffs" will thrive outside the Toronto market where he's not subjected to the constant psychological barrage and scrutiny of media and fans that is probably contributing to his lack of production or confidence. It was highly unfortunate he got burned for the OT goal, and his complete lack of attempt to stuff the puck into a wide open net was symptomatic of a need for change.
I like the idea of Markstrom being the Leafs goalie. I would even bring back Kadri lol sounds crazy I know but at least he has some jam & grit he is a Hyman type but with less skill. Leafs desperately need a #1 dman they can't keep defending Reilly he is getting worse here as we seen this playoffs all the ten years of constant losing is weighing on Reilly trade him for another dman or package him for a winger who can score.
I don't know why everyone is so quickly to crap on Marner he was not the only core 4 player that didn't show up. Tavares was also a ghost and he makes just as much money and he's the captain for crying out loud you can't get rid of Tavares and has no movement clause and Willie and Matthews aren't going anywhere so Marner is unfortunately the odd man out. Marner is a gifted playmaker and I guarantee you 100% Matthews doesn't get anywhere near 69 goals without Marner he would be lucky to have 50
