Creators should control their own platform. It’s a topic we've heard time and time again, even an existential fear - what happens if RU-vid goes away? Is there a way for creators to own their own content?
Thanks for checking out my return to RU-vid, I can't wait to share more video essays, histories, and walkthroughs!
Talk to me on Threads! threads.net/@insanj
P.S. I will definitely try to improve the audio quality in the next video 😅

So, what are the solutions in the fediverse to the problem of spam and, say, hate speech? With centralized power at least there's a possibility of them being held responsible for the messages they delete. Is there a mechanism to do so in the fediverse? I also understand it is a tricky issue because with decentralized communication, journalists and people in oppressive regimes are able to communicate without them being censored.

That's a great question, thanks for asking (and I hope you enjoyed the video)! Definitely a really important challenge to consider. Here are 3 approaches that I think could work: 1. Cross-instance moderation groups: the founders/admins of platforms can become part of a shared moderation system that allows for a governing body to oversee the trust and safety across a wide range of different federated networks. 2. Client-based moderation: the websites, apps, or services that plug into and allow browsing the federated networks can have their own trust and safety barrier that prevents objectionable content from reaching the end-user. This can also be shared between different federated "clients," and potentially, could even exist alongside #1 to have two layers of security. 3. User-based moderation per-community: pretty much how sites like Reddit work today, there could be teams of moderators which are ideally oversee specific parts of instances instead of the whole thing at once. This allows for potentially more specific and thoughtful moderation based on the kind of users who browse that place (think: community-based trigger warnings). And again, this could still work in tandem with #1 and #2. Ideally, if any or all of these exist, they would be able to share information between each other about what defines objectionable content for their community, and what is a must-block offense. Then, with a governing body, ideally one that is elected or supported by the community, a semi-automated flagging system could be set up similar to what the centralized platforms do, so the worst stuff can be reviewed before anyone has to see it.

Thank you so much, I'm glad you liked it! Right now, I love editing the videos myself, but I would definitely consider bringing an editor on board in the future. Sadly, I don't really have the resources to support an editor 🫤
