You've learned how to do behind the back (BTB) poi weaves, now what comes next? Behind the back weaves were perhaps the most challenging trick I picked up in my first couple years spinning poi, but the good news is there are several adjacent tricks that make good use of the skills involved in learning them that also look pretty cool! Check these out and see if any of them feel like a good pivot after you've learned these very challenging poi moves!

You don’t get enough recognition !! Always wanted to know how to do the meltdown.

Funny enough, I've been practicing meltdowns (without knowing their name,) as a way to build up towards behind the back skills. :) Reverse btbw seems much easier for me (currently) than a forward btbw. Btb1.5 is my next goal after being able to weave well.

Liked Drexs videos as his content is always good and worth watching. And he was answering a request for this move. But IMHO, the 3 beat behind the back weave is not a pretty or useful move. Thats why you rarely see it used. It bend planes and it not really good at transitioning into or out of gracefully. The BTB waistwrap is where it is at. And Drex performes it so well. It looks good and links is so well to other moves, hense the link into the last move showcased. It's also harder to learn, but it's worth the investment. You need to learn excellent plane control staying within wall plane behind your back and switching to the front plane in front. Learning the 3 best weave just slows the process of learning the BTB waistwrap down as I learned. The BTB waistwrap is in essence a 2 beat weave behind the back on each side of the body. Learn each side first and the lastly the link between them.

Wouldn't argue about it not looking great. Unless you have long arms it looks pretty awkward and still need you shrugging side to side. But there are some nice ways to get into it, namely just doing a 3 beat forward weave and turning in place. Same way getting out of it.

The BTB definitely isn't my favorite to look at, but it is a necessary evil for getting down the BTB Waistwrap and a whole lot of other tricks. I think it's okay to spend time learning stuff that's a stepping stone to other things, even if they don't always look that pretty. Plus which, you never know when someone will come up with a way to perform a trick you've seen and taken for granted for years and do it in such a way that you see a beauty you didn't know was hiding within it all along!

Drex, along the same lines of your latest "What Comes Next" series of videos, would you be interested in touching on "plateauing" or feeling like you've reached a point where continuing to improve (or even evolve) your flow seems more and more challenging? As always, fantastic content and thanks so much!

It's a topic that's come up with some frequency on my livestreams and sadly my answer to it isn't very satisfying to most people, but perhaps I can come up with a more appealing way to deliver it. Hmm...I'll think about this over the holidays. 🤔

Man so I used to be able to do behind the back 3 beat weaves but totally lost them after a few years of not spinning, coming back to poi now, I can finally do meltdowns, but my split timing falls apart faster than covid has been spreading (just a joke, to lighten an already grim situation) and I can't figure out why, in both directions I can get 2 or 3 good ones before it goes to the timing of Slavic folk music which is something like 7/3 ..... haha maybe not that bad. But I guess keep on trying is the key, I liked your comment at the start of the video on how long it can take to learn some poi moves.. usually when ppl ask me at any festival how I got good at spinning, I tell them, "I spin to learn a new move until I absolutely feel like throwing my poi threw a window and screaming that the forces that be have cursed me and this is stupid I give up... then in 10 minutes I go grab them and keep trying when I've cooled down. Rinse and repeat, and at one point I got it!!! Then the more you get down, the less you feel the need to burn your poi (non fire of course, but slight pub intended) and kick them into a hydronic press out of frustration... as a matterof fact you start to feel creativity of what's possible and whats cool to come up with based on what know and that's when you feel like you truly have a achieved a feeling that defines the "flow," in flow arts.... but there's a ton of frustration and shit to press through when starting out, just cool down a bit and get back at it, that's the key, practice makes progress, and fairy tales make perfection" and then they look at me like I'm crazy....

BTB has given me the most trouble out of, basically, every move I’ve tried. I can only do a beat or two. I just can’t seem to reach that far BTB with my arms. It’s like I’m trying to learn a 7-beat weave; I don’t think it’s gonna happen. I really want to learn the BTB waistwrap though.

Watch Nick from playpoi teach how to counter swing your core. It's the one where he's in a dinosaur onesie. It took me a while to get into muscle memory, closing my eyes was super helpful for getting over trying to see what is going on. Not looking and moving the right wrong way means the poi just weave back there like they know what to do without me. Good luck!
