The consolation is that Naofumi never actually saw or treats her as more than a daughter throughout the majority of the series, making the crush almost worthless.

You do realize he has been treating her less and less like a daughter and more as an equal/lover as the series CONTINUES. Season one, what you're saying is true, but 2~3 onward that changes slowly but can see where it's heading.

If I remember correctly, the novel gave a bit more context, which, when combined with her backstory, actually makes it not nearly as bad as it's made out to be. While indeed "demonstration of dedication" fits very well, and is far more accurate than some people's insistence that she did it just because "he's a good guy" or "she liked being his slave", it goes a bit deeper. She did it to prove that he could trust her. She'd been with him for a few weeks at that point, had seen just how broken he is, and just saw him crushed to such a deep level that his Curse almost activated (yeah, the Curse doesn't normally activate at will, he has to let himself fall to hate and wrath). On top of that, she herself knows what it's like to be betrayed by those you trust. For most of her life the guards and soldiers of the local lord had been protectors, people she and everyone could trust to support and protect them. Then, the moment the situation changed, these exact same soldiers showed up, killed the men and captured the women and children to sell as slaves, after which she and her friends faced torment at the hands of sadists with lingering grudges from the war. If anyone understands what it's like to put trust in people and then be betrayed and stripped of everything, she does, and so she knows just how hard it can be to trust someone again. It's a huge thing that she trusts Naofumi so much, and replacing the slave crest simultaneously shows just how deeply she's chosen to trust him as well as how much she wants to ensure that he can always trust her. While it's done through slavery, I still think it's a very huge statement on her part about how important his trust is to her.

I would actually consider here act of devotion to be Lawful Neutral. She is sacrificing for someone she loves, but she's also degrading her dignity to do so. But there is also matters of rational self-interest at play, which weights it further into the Neutral direction.

Things to mention about Raphtalia: 1- She is 10 years old despite having a body of an 18 year old. This is a part of the main reason Naofumi considers her more of a daughter at this point in the story. 2- She was bought three times (excluding her re-enslavement in episode 4), first one was the Idol the noble that tortures her. He tortured her for his amusement and sold her back due to her sickness. Second guy that bought her shortly returned her due to her screams at nights. Then Naofumi comes around and buys her. So there are reasons she's not bought, which she was, and returned back for not being a good one to have around. 3- In the scene where Raphtalia was fighting that fat noble, she was there to KILL him. She failed and had to resort to her "mana sword", with it she managed to land a blow and he got defenestrated. 4- She kinda kick-started that fight in the banquet. And she's only sorry because it could cause Naofumi some reputation, which he lacks enough of it. 5- She's a really interesting character in the books until very late volumes in which Naofumi and her relationship finally goes somewhere, but during that time, she's rather fully developed character and most of her lines are mostly consist of being Cloudcuckoolander's Minder to Naofumi.

I’d also like to add that the leveling to age up thing is a temporary condition. Demi humans below a specific age range can receive physical age from their levels. If they lose those levels, they revert to their true age. However, Without levels, their bodies will age naturally in accordance to their true age. Once they reached that age threshold, levels will no longer have any effect on their body, and there will no longer have physical changes due to the leveling. For example, Raphtalia‘s true age is 10 years old, but her physical age is 18 due to her level. Once her true age reaches 18, she will no longer lose her physical appearance when she loses her levels. It is a very odd mechanic when you think about it, but that seems to be the general rule. I am unsure if they’re true age continues to mature, while they are experiencing physical age due to levels though. I would imagine it probably does to keep the story on a decent timetable, otherwise Raphtalia would have to revert to level one and then wait for eight more years before she’s legally an adult. And that would just throw the time line out of whack in my opinion.

@@1danysaneit is an odd mechanic, but i can see logic in it. I mean it is possible that i take this from another story, but i remember hearing that demi-human has some monsterlike characteristics, this odd mechanic is probably a derivation from that. In that world level means almost everything in combat or skills development, what if the leveling is actually everything for monsters, in that case monsters grow with level, taking for example a cerverus, they start as a puppy and grow till maturity at a certain level, those who don't reach that level, just get killed by other monster or adventurers. Now, if demi-humans have some kind of genetic relationship with monsters and humans, it is probably that sudden growth it is a survival mechanism that their monsters ancestors past down till now and it is active until they get strongest their body will get in the human growth mechanism. PD: I apologize if it's kind of hard to get what I'm trying to say, English isn't my first language.

The reason Filo isn't aging the same as Raphtalia is because Filo isn't a Demihuman, she's a Filolial. Specifically, she's a Filolial Queen, which is a special, rare type of Filolial that can turn into a human-like form.

8:15 In the light novel, this scene is VERY different. While in the Anime Naofumi indicates that he doesn't think it's a good idea for her to take revenge in the LN he doesn't care if it's right or ethical. Raphtalia was always there for him, if she wanted to kill this man he would support her no matter what. Secondly: The noble put up a pretty good fight, disarming Raphtalia with his cursed whip that would have done severe damage to her. Naofumi caught his whip to protect her and a short fight with him ensued ending with Raphtalia throwing her magic sword like a spear, impaling him which she followed by stabbing him in the sholdier with a normal sword pushing him through the window. After that, he fell out the window. And while Raphtalia thought she just killed him she had no remorse whatsoever.

@malcirhodes3
@malcirhodes3 8 месяцев назад
I am pretty sure only Raphtalia says that Demihumans grow faster by level up and quite a few people give her the side-eye for it. This suggests that she is lying in order to try to get Noafumi to see her as a women, not an actual fact about demis. The real reason she "ages up" is because of a monster rearing skill Noafumi has that also works on Demis. This is also while filo is the equivalent of a five-ish year old Filoliol even though she is not even a year old. This is also why Melromarc lost the war against the Demis and why Trash holds a grudge against the shield hero.
@malcirhodes3
@malcirhodes3 8 месяцев назад
Also, some specifically states that she is indeed different from normal Demis and that she still has the mind of an 11 year old. The reason why this changes later is because by the end of the slave recovery arc Raph is about 12 to 13 and at the point Noafumi even gives her a chance is when she is chronologically 16 or 17. Also because of how stong he is, the shield itself, and different buffs, Noafumi does not age.

To be fair, in the light novels it is made clear that the beastfolk do mature as they level. It's particularly noticeable with Keel for certain reasons. spoiler: Keel's actually a girl, she's just a tomboy who admired her dad and misunderstood things her dad said when trying to explain her gender to her. The group go to a beach one day and see her chest wrapped up (you can actually see in the anime that she's already wrapping her chest as the wrapping shows under the shirt). She says she's just gotten swollen from training, until Raphtalia walks up and grabs her crotch. They explain things to her, and Filo gives a shockingly thorough explanation of the significance of males and females and the entire reproductive process (she just instinctively knows it all), to which Keel responds there's no way she could do such a thing with "Shield Bro". As much confusion and argument as there was, she still does accept what they all told her, and even starts wearing a dress when helping Naofumi on merchant runs; her shy embarrassment makes her incredibly cute, drawing in tons of customers. On a side note, while I can understand that some people might wish to interpret this as a trans girl or something, considering that she was written ultimately accepting her assigned gender and choosing to just be a boyish girl, I'm going to side with "just didn't understand what her dad said".

The author of the series is very good at using Chekov's Gun and a lot of minor oddities in the story that make no sense, like Raphtalia's age quirk (which is actually shown later to be worse then most Demi-humans (due again to her lineage) as other Demis do not show it nearly as severally, its actually far far more subtle, most that get introduced later actually hit the aging cap before at a younger physical age. It is also not spelled out in the anime but is implied that the curse he is suffering on blocks him from seeing her as having grown, he literally can only see her as a child until she is freed by the Spear Hero. This is actually meant to show that the Hero's weapons can affect how a hero sees the world which also is very important and comes up later. The anime does not address the reason for demi-human ageing but there is an important story connected to Raph that does not come up until later, lets just say her lineage actually is a plot point that her being older would make it hard to explain her ignorance of where she came from. To be honest the anime was done very poorly, in fact if they followed the time line better the last part of season 1, where he gets her village, should not happen until much later, Season 3 (His reward for the whole spirit turtle mess). There is even an entire arc that is plot critical that should take place in Season 2 (before and preluding into the spirit turtle mess) that is skipped. (The Sword Hero and a new girl's relationship with him seems sudden and out of left field without that arc) And the introduction of the old woman he saved as being a hidden badass does not appear until this skipped Arc either.

The thing that bugs me most about Raphtalia's age up, is that it's not consistent for anyone else. The other demi human kids in the village never rapidly age, even though many of them were trained to high levels. One new recruit had her level reset to take advantage of the stat gains from Naofumi, she didn't age down. It works better, both for consistency and other reasons if she was always older, but Naofumi just thought of her as being that young because of her innocence and naivety.

@@danieltilson4053 Yeah, like I said, I haven't actually read the Light Novel, that's just what I've heard from other people. Although to be fair to Raphtalia, it's likely she's heard that demis grow as they level up, as I'm fairly certain it does happen for all demise, it's just that for others it's more of "accelerated aging" rather than straight up instant, and she probably hasn't seen, or can't remember seeing someone gain that amount of levels in such a short amount of time. She wasn't exactly educated.

@@danieltilson4053 Naw, it applies to all Demi-humans but variies by what type of demi-human is involved. It the light novel, Naofumi notices when he starts training the kids in the village that while they are aging up, none of them aged up as quickly as Raphatilia and most plateaued after reaching their early teens. He chalked this up to her being in his party and having the most contact with the buff, but we learn otherwise later on. Also, the white tiger demi-humans are noted to not age up until they are much higher level. No spoilers, but a character goes from 12 to 18 almost overnight once they hit that point.

Apparently the aging thing also only works to an extent too. She’s something like level 76 now but is not an old lady. Makes sense with the reason given. They age up in order to be able to handle the harsh environment that caused them to level so quickly. Becoming old would actually hinder one's ability to deal with a harsh environment (no matter what that one old lady is capable of). Also, the mechanism for aging is kind of different from the mechanism for maturing. That's why there's rapid-aging diseases that will result in kids who still look like kids in many ways but also have a lot of characteristics of octogenarians.

The thing the anime fails to make clear about demihumans is that they can age naturally, and will naturally level up just from existing if you give them long enough. It’s just that hitting a certain level threshold jumps their aging ahead, presumably because of some sort of innate level up ability they get that can’t be executed with a child’s body.

The reason no one wanted to buy her was because she was sick. Look back at what happened with her friend. Her friend died of an illness, partly brought on by malnutrition, torture and filthy living conditions, and when Raphtalia was returned to the slaver she too had developed that same sickness. She was weak, frail, and likely to die soon unless her new owner spent significant amounts of money and time to get her well again. Who would buy that? That's like buying a car knowing that you'd have to spend three times its worth just to make it moderately operable. In merchandise terms, she was totaled.

Oh, there is a good reason why Naofumi hasn't made a move on Raphtalia, and that is from caring for her and watching her grow up into her current womanly form, all his current feelings for her, at least what's included in the first season that was the sole source of content for this video, are all fatherly instead of romantic. Pretty much, Naofumi might have noticed that Raphtalia is a pretty girl, but he also probably sees her as his teenage daughter. After that dog monster they fight before getting Filo, Naofumi treats Raphtalia more like a daughter than a slave outside of their fights.

Demi-human literally means half humans and half monsters. I don't remember their origin, but I think it was said that their ancestors were not created by nature. When a small demi-human child has to fight to the death with dangerous monsters, it means that he is in danger, that there is a threat and the body, as part of its survival instincts, gives the advantage to the monster nature/gene and they start to age not like people, but like monsters (Pokemon) . The change in aging is purely for survival purposes because a 15-year-old has a greater chance of surviving a fight than a 7-year-old. The age change only lasts until the body is at the peak of its capabilities (the stat multiplier will be the most favorable). This is also the reason why racists in that world have a pseudo-scientific excuse for why demi-humans are treated as sub-humans within the world-building. As for Filo, she is not a demi-human, but a monster. Her appearance/age also changes with level, but this only applies to her bird form. The human form is only a transformation for the royal variety and is not related to its biology.

??? wait what? you are confused at the ageing in the show? filo doesn't age like raphtalia because they are different species. only filoias that hatch as queens/princesses can change their form, they also don't age as much because they keep that tiny little girl body for hundreds of years. while raphtalia's a demihuman or a beastkin, which in this series can be translated in two ways, the stated one was the fact she was cared for and nurtured by nafomai so much so that her desires to do the same accelerated her growth. and the other one is to care and nurture one's improvements. i think the reason they made demihumans grow that way was to show how one can be stunted and not grow well when they are mistreated and abused. media has a hard time showing the affects of child abuse, as it can really stunt and limit children. so having this kind of system at least shows that even if it is in small windows of the show.

Demihumans don't specifically age with levels, instead a young demihuman who levels will receive their mature bodies early.

WEB NOVEL SPOILERS (events covered in the video) So, I read the Web Novel (didn't watch the anime tho) and in the web novel, Raphtalia didn't undergo any mental aging and is very confused about how to sort her feeling after her growth spurt. Naofumi is, however, not confused at all and is like "yep, that's a 13 years old" and when she actually confesses, he asks her to wait until the waves are dealt with, and then when that happens, he asks her to wait some more. Filo technically is the exact same, she is just small and behaves like a very verbal 2 years old most of the time and Naofumi behaves with her like she is. Also, the hot spring episode doesn't exist in the web novel . WEB NOVEL SPOILERS (events happening later in the story) The only part of the web novel when Naofumi even entertains the idea of pursuing a relationship with underage Raphtalia is when he gets cursed and loses all his marbles (and he also creates a specie that is a racoon equivalent to Filorials in the process behaving like a mad scientist for a dozen of chapters) In the end of the web novel, Naofumi gets divine powers like ubiquity and does actually decide to entertain a relationship with them all when they get old enough (that is something he insists is an important condition to it)

1) Demi-Humans age & grow up at the rate as humans do, normally. 2) Level ups will cause them to grow at a faster rate, but it stops at a certain point of their development, which depends on what species of Demi-Human they are. 3) This accelerated maturation is one of the reasons for the racism Demi-Humans face, because the only other creatures that can grow up as they level up are monsters. 4) They could have used the older than they look trope, she could have started out as a 16-18 year old but stunted growth, due to something like malnutrition, an illness, a curse of some condition that gets cured after partying up with Naofumi.

The quick levelling thing is probably due to the author feeling a certain level of discomfort with the subject matter and a desire to incorporate game logic into their worldbuilding. Other than that I think it may be to rick the audience into thinking they have a deeper connection than time would normally allow. Considering what happens later, this series would be more "Rise of the Child Slavery Hero".
@TheMelnTeam

It's easier to make one character older initially than to try to keep all the other interactions with beastfolk consistent with that later. I suspect the author just didn't know how he wanted the story to go initially, and had to make due with the inconsistency later or explain it away somehow.
@AdmarilDarius

@TheMelnTeam speaking from memory here, but I believe this aspect with demi-humans, Beastfolk, and some monsters does stay consistent. To the point that characters physically regress when they lose levels.

So I feel the need to point out Demi-humans grow up faster when leveling up. They dont grow "by" leveling, being capable of growing up normally over time like normal people and even then... and I suppose this only adds fuel to the fire, according to the wiki, Demi-humans who come from or whose family have come from a certain place grow up as quickly as Raphtalia did when leveling. Id like to say more, but spoilers ^^;

On the 7th day of Xmas the Loading Crew gave to me! 7 days till the next wave, 6 months to live, 5 GODDAMN RESCUES! 4 sex related injuries, 3 totally legit Nobel Prizes, 2 swords in hand, And an Isekai hero grinding EXP! Ok, so I actually put some thought into Raphtallia's age up when I watched season for the first time. My personal theory is less that, Demi humans get older as the level up and that's just how they age, cause that's a bad system. I think it's more like, an evolutionary trait for survival. If a child is in combat enough that they are not just surviving, but actually leveling up, then maybe their body rapidly begins to mature so as to make it so their body is better suited to the constant combat. After all, Raph goes well beyond level 18 in the show and she's not middle aged or anything like that. And, spoilers for season 2....... When her level is reset, so is her body, back to her appropriate age. They aren't aging when they level up, they are adapting their bodies for combat.

Funny enough, Raphtalia is the ONLY one that goes through this. None of the other demi-humans go through nearly the same transformation as she does. Perhaps it's an allegory of her having grown up too quickly? She was a kid at the beginning of this. But because of Naofumi, the hero system, and the horrors of the world, she is forced to adapt VERY quickly to these circumstances. Though, fair warning, she and a few others get done pretty dirty in the conversion from the manga/LN to the anime. She has FAR more agency after this arc. There's a lot of small moments here and there that show her (and other people's) development that just get shoveled onto Naofumi. It kinda gets frustrating to watch, knowing this.
@hugoandre96
@hugoandre96 8 месяцев назад
It does seem that the demi human's aging and leveling system is affected by the hero they are with. Leveling makes them stronger, but aging could be accelerated because of a bond to her master or just an age acceleration buff in general.
@ExDragonMaster
@ExDragonMaster 8 месяцев назад
@@hugoandre96 It could be the bond thing. SPOILERS I doubt it's just because she's a demi-human or because of a hidden passive Naofumi has. Naofumi later adopts children from Raphtalia's village and makes them his slaves to ensure that they get stronger quickly through the slave system. None of them go through quick aging like Raphtalia does (though they do look a BIT older).
@broEye1
@broEye1 8 месяцев назад
The others do mature a fair amount though. In particular... Keel, who's caught with "his" chest wrapped up at the beach later on. Raphtalia checks, and then they all explain the difference between males and females. Surprisingly, she ultimately accepts it, though she still prefers to act and dress in a boyish manner, and often chooses a dog form since it's less differentiable.

It's honestly sad the details that get lost in adaptation from LN to anime cos in the LN it's revealed that Naofumi didn't see her physically as a woman until the duel that FORCED her to not be his slave due the sheer torment and trauma.

Technically Filo is a monster and not a demihuman, so physically aging by leveling up could be exempt from her... and Queen Fitoria's humanoid form is also very young-looking despite her being centuries old, so I think the unfortunate lore we have to glean from this is that queen filolials might just naturally be lolis.

the only thing I think is weird about Demi humans aging by leveling up is, does that mean she will die super fast'? like when she reaches level 50 will she look like a 50 year old???? or is there a limit to the aging? because otherwise she will quickly you know? die! due to leveling up. then again it seems like Demi humans can have long life spans or at least those blessed by some type of magic? which makes sense I guess.

I do agree that it's a little odd to have beastfolk age with levels. Only things it really contributed were a further demonstration of how far Naofumi'd fallen as his psyche didn't even pick up that she'd changed physiologically, and a way to temporarily dismiss her crush: she's TEN (no, not six, ten, though that doesn't make it too much better) and ten-year-olds crush pretty darn easily. It's only natural that someone with the psychological maturity of a ten-year-old would become infatuated with a big, strong man who saved her life and protected her when no one else would, and it's only natural that a guy who recognizes that she's ten would continue to treat her as "like a daughter" no matter how hard she tries to seem appealing. Even with that, it's not really adding all THAT much, and it becomes meaningless fast. And it's obviously not that the author wanted him to have an underage love interest without looking like a lolicon, considering that at least the next two girls he becomes connected to are ten years an one month old, and neither of them ever get an adult body.
@TheMelnTeam
@TheMelnTeam 8 месяцев назад
It's just an odd inconsistency in the writing, no matter how you slice it. If they kept her looking her age, most of the story still works other than maybe she'd have to use different weapons for a bit in the other world or something? They could also have just made her older to begin with...there are plenty of easily plausible ways to write Naofumi rejecting romantic feelings out of hand (pick one or multiple: problem with slavery generally but doing this out of desperation, doubting her "real" feelings since she's a slave, needing to get over hatred for women after just being betrayed, initial concern with how humans/beastfolk relationships would work both socially and physically). That's just offhand, I'm sure people could come up with more. Among those, something like initial doubt (dispelled by her willingly retaking the contract) and later "heal emotionally" angle seems most reasonable w/o disrupting the story; he just isn't and can't be interested that way until later in the story after he's healed more, even if the slave contract allows him to at least trust against betrayal. This skips the semi plot hole of other beast folk not aging up to that extent and more or less leaves her character unchanged (also makes her handling of her situation in the other world more plausible, since that would be extremely difficult for someone to navigate even as an adult, and makes the contrast with Filo work better there). Matters less the more you go into the story, since a greater % of a character's development, capability, and rationale would be shaped by the events of the story rather than what we'd expect from someone based on their backstory alone.
@broEye1
@broEye1 8 месяцев назад
@@TheMelnTeam Just one thing: it's not really a plot hole that the other beastfolk age up a bit less. It's apparently established in-story that the rate of aging varies and she in particular is exceptional in that area. Unnecessary complication perhaps since there's not that much value in the aging (even the whole "only beastfolk and monsters do it" could easily be simply shifted to them sharing some other more significant characteristic), but I don't think I'd call it a plot hole. The others do age up, we're just talking physiologically 13-14 at level 40 rather than physiologically 18-20 at level 20. Just enough for puberty to kick in.
@aliastheabnormal
@aliastheabnormal 8 месяцев назад
Also the aging thing is more of a Raphtalia thing. As the other demi-humans that join the main cast keep their designs even when they level up. The entire reason that Raphtalia ages is just to add drama to the harem plot.

If you think they're weird, that's fine. But there is a distinction between the real world and fiction, and most fringe fandoms fully understand and exercise this distinction. Most people in the furry fandom never looked at a real rabbit and thought "Hmm...". Most fans of Guro wouldn't actually want to disembowel a girl while having sex. Most fans of domination/rape hentai don't actually want to have sex without their partner's consent, or if the fantasy does exist recognize the moral repugnance of it enough that they'd never do it in any manner outside of roleplaying. Same thing goes for lolicon/shotacon fans: many, probably most, don't actually want anything to do sexually with real kids. It's true that actual rapists will likely be drawn to rape fiction, actual perpetrators of bestiality to furry stuff, and actual child predators to the Loli/Shota stuff, but that doesn't in turn mean that enjoying any of that stuff implies a significant interest in the real thing.

Shield Hero when it was single dad and his cadre of adopted daughters: 10/10 Shield Hero when all of those daughters are morphed into waifu options: meh/10 The author's love of *young* waifus and slavery just feels so fucking weird. Like it's just kinda *there*, and you just have to kinda ignore the BLATANT trend of the potentially great storylines and themes being undercut by obvious "totally not my fetish" stuff. It's kinda like when you notice that every single season of SAO has a "sexual assault scene". One of them is even handled very very well and another is pretty justifiable from a writer's perspective, but the other two being there and establishing the pattern just robs the highlights and makes them lowlights. I mean fucking seriously, the last one in War of Underworld WASN'T EVEN LIKE THAT IN THE SOURCE. It's like the anime studio saw their stacked little sister hadn't been treated to the SAO waifu rite of passage and just twisted the brutal torture scene so they could make stuff bounce and throw in some interesting soundbites.
